Gees, only 4 pages on the Hawks Game thread vs 28 to the Blues
Are we the most verbose aka (fanatical supporters)?
Anyway. They are hoping for a wet day. They're worried about Harry, Casboult and Charlie if he plays.
Especially Cripps.

I hope we rain on their parade.
Expose their flimsy charade.
And shout out, the latest news,
We're back, the mighty Blues

I think there's a decent chance Ed gets squeezed out of our best 22 by the end of this year...certainly by round 1 next year.

I personally think he should play a negating wing or half forward role every week. The only reason he isnt playing wing or mid mins is to assist development. Sooner or later we will be putting wins over development and he is comfortably our best defensive runner.

I suspsect that will be the case for another 2 years. Plenty of limited taggers have strongly contributed to a flag.

I'd prefer to have him coming off the wing to tag and leave Cunners, Murph, SOS and Gibbo to rotate through high half forward.

Hawks beaten Crows and North.
Lost to saints, dogs and cats.Should be a lot closer than what people think.

I want to believe but I'm still to damaged by the past. That said, I think I'll actually tip us. Cant remember the last time we won 2 in a row though...

I'm curious to see how this game plays out tactically. Clarksons Hawks don't tend to bomb it long much preferring a short kick game which will negate our tall backs somewhat. Will be very interesting to see how we approach that.

Can't wait to see how we handle it all.

Charlie Curnow is an interesting one.

He could come in and step straight into O'Brien's role on the wing/half back.

We could bring him in and use him in the center, put him forward when Casboult goes into the ruck.

We could replace Casboult with Curnow and ruck McKay.

We could play him in the VFL to get him into touch because his form has not been great and his knee may not be reliable enough. Would also send a good message to a player who has been talked up way too much and it may have gone to his head.

Plenty to play out here.

Cuningham for Polson is an absolute must for me.

Think it will be important to have LOB’s running capacity and clean ball use against hawks.
I can't stop thinking about that hit up he did to Kreuzer in the first few minutes of the game on Sunday. We forget that he was having 20 touches by the end of last year, he'll find his feet again soon enough.

2017 - Rnds 12 & 13 Giants & Suns.

Also last time we beat the Hawks.

I completely agree, but unless we can somehow access Clive Palmer’s political advertising budget and use it to buy people off, we’re never going to convince the “too many talls” brigade to change their minds.
What there missing is that JSOS is actually taller than Charlie and less agile to boot so we played with 4 talls last week as well, but because we used the ball better it worked like a treat which it would of against the Gold Coast if we used it better in that game. It’s a no brainer.

It's not about that at all. It's about selecting the best squad for the opponent at hand.
Statements like, 'Don't change a winning team' make little sense to me unless of course the spread, balance and quality of players are already in place.
This isn't a game of reward an individual just because the collective had the win. What does that really say? It says, we'll wait until we lose and then we'll make the necessary changes. You've now started a cycle of being reactive and not proactive. It's not a good cycle at all, as you always have to be aiming higher and not simply being content with the status quo.

VFL player review: Round 3

This has been dropped in the NB's thread but I think it may be relative and certainly more visible here.
Big wraps on Williamson & Macreadie here....and by default wraps on their management to get them to this point.

Balance is important, but the number one factor is continuity, but of course you always strive to improve that on-field unit with subtle changes. You only make changes if you are confident that the team ethos/roles, that were successful previously are not eroded or compromised

Never once have I stated that players should be judged and or rewarded with automatic selection by a collective win, so we are on the same page in that regard. But then you step outside that philosophy and want to reward a player that has had one good half of football in 5 weeks (I am not including JLT, as that is like dancing with your sister), that has never established himself as a consistent best 22 player, unlike Marchbank and Kruezer, to come in based on we think he will play better than player X. What message would that be sending?

I have also noticed people wanting Charlie to come in to replace Levi. Levi, a player that performed not only personally, more importantly for the side, while Charlie has yet to show any form that mirrors last year, who has looked lazy, disinterested and lacking touch. Careful of the message we are sending

Personally, I doubt the MC will select Cuners, but if they do, I understand his selection is based around a point of difference

I don’t know if this is correct, but I just heard that Liam Jones has only conceded 3 goals this year!
Now that’s miserly!

100% correct chels ...

Richmond - 1
Port Adelaide - 0
Sydney - 2
Gold Coast - 0
Western Bulldogs - 0

Amazing what improving pressure on the ball carrier does. No doubt Jones has been great but his opponent has been getting much poorer AND much less delivery.

That said, his record needs to be plastered all over social media. Should comfortably be AA FB currently.

I would like to see Charlie (80%) & McKay (20%) rotate through a wing, playing the Richo role.
Levi & Kreuzer to rotate fwd/ruck.

Hopefully the boys will get a bit of confidence and self-belief from the win and remember to keep attacking.

Just play charlie on the wing. Mckay should play almost all of his footy within 2 kicks of goal.

On the AFL website 17 people tipped Hawthorn. None tipped Carlton.

Even though the match is 13th vs 15th, we are coming off a win while they lost. Even though the only opponent we share was a big win for us and a loss for them. Even though we are just hitting peak fitness and they have a bunch of niggles and have struggled to run out quarters and games.

I know we suck, but i am a bit stunned by that... if I was Bolts I would be plastering it up on the change room walls as a bit of inspiration...

That is a very fair point and something that clearly requires consideration at Team Selection.

I just feel that you have to be able to project what the team you're considering may, look like against the opposition, by way of many factors.
I don't know what references the MC use in order to determine this. There must be some sort of formula and not simply 'gut-feel'
Would love to sit in one one of these meets and especially so this week when the likes of names CCurnow, Williamson, Kennedy and Cuningham may be put on the table against the few that may be borderline selections.
I think we both agree that it's a sum of the parts game and not simply one of 'throw in your best players and things will sort themselves out'.

What I am gaining a lot of confidence in now (after proof) is that the Russell-regime plants players back into the fold, when they're actually ready to go.
It will never be perfect, but the difference is considerable to that witnessed previously. No way would have Macreadie and Williamson had first games back to the quality I aw on Saturday. Looked as though they hadn't missed a beat. Remarkable.
