Looks like he is playing in quicksand. Disposal is average, not winning it inside and doesnt transition as well as our other mids.

Maybe needs to go to a forward flank and try to hit the scoreboard.

yep.
he's getting games on name and reputation at the moment

Was always likely to need time to settle. Even with his reduced impact he's still offering more than the current available alternatives so happy for him to get the continuity.

If this is Beams at his "worst" we will be fine.
He has had an interrupted summer and it'll take a bit of transitioning to learn patterns and chemistry of teammates.
His inclusion has been handy considering Sier has been out all year which would have left us a midfielder short.

His pace is a concern, but we all knew that. Overall, I think he's been fine. Been pretty clean. Getting a fair bit of footy in and around the contest. Been about the par score for what I was expecting. I'm not really sure what other people are expecting?

Couldn't cover the ground and looks like he's playing injured. Showed no emotion and looked out of place in the circle singing the song after the win.

I think some people don't quite understand the significance of an interrupted preseason. It will take until half way through the season before he starts to peak.

If this is Beams at his worst, then i can't imagine how destructive he will be for the opposition come finals. He is an absolute superstar of the game and was the best player in the competition after round 14 last year.

I have no doubt come to the pointy end of the season both Beams and Sidey(who hasn't been his usual self so far) will both be a handful for the opposition.

His hands in close are a real weapon and probably his best asset.

He is also generally a good creative user of the ball by foot.

Biggest flaw is defensive pressure which unfortunately might be something he cannot fix due to lack of speed.

What we need to hope for is that he wins a lot of the pill and uses it well AND that he does just enough defensively to prevent our zone from breaking down.

The only area I think he can realistically improve in is hitting the scoreboard, he has been good for 20+ goals a season historically.

I've been a bit shocked at his performances. Disposal numbers are fine but seems to have no impact.

Sorry but his disposal looks fine; I don’t recall this lesser disposal, overall.

He’s going ok from I see.
Is he killing it? No.
But he’s certainly ahead of the medium level.
Way ahead including this year.
He’s still racking up possessions and he has a lot of team mates that assist and share the ball.

Just my take.

Maybe passing the ball nicely to his team mates is his goal.

Just don’t see the talk on Beams being this lesser type this season.

Just don’t see it.

If Cal Brown was playing as poorly as Beams everyone would be frothing themselves about a superstar in the making.
He is going ok - not great - but offers similar traits to our other mids and it’s the lack of a ‘point of difference’ that seems to limit them at present.
I don’t buy the ‘learning our structures ‘ argument. A ball hunting mid does not rely on structures to be effective.
I do think the presence of a genuine inside ball winner is key to his best role as a first receiver.
Some niggles are also likely the cause of him not operating at full throttle just yet.
I agree with trying to push him forward more often where he can hit the scoreboard.
Calling for his head seems a bit extreme to me.

Beams doesn’t show much emotion, that has always been the case.
Don’t doubt his love for the Pies though.

There was a terrible inside kick into our defensive 50 on Anzac day, handballing inside has been sloppy and hasn't cut any angles or opened the play up yet by foot.

I think he is capable of very damaging disposal and hitting the scoreboard, but so far it has been average and he needs to hurt if he is just going to plod along the ground.

For 2 1st rounders he should be our best player...

Certainly not - but neither was he recruited for that - more of a top up player. Most clubs do it if they get the opportunity.

For 1st rounders you can get top 5 players on your list even with late 1st rounders ie. Grundy so you would expect a player who cost you two of them to be better than just a handy contributor at 29 years old... he needs to improve a lot for us to get any value out of this.

There’s no guarantee.
For every Grundy you can draft a Broomhead or Kennedy who were also 1st rounders....

Nope. All he needs to do is help us win the flag this year.
