[PLAYERCARD]Ben McKay[/PLAYERCARD] would be playing Weitering's position in our backline.

Too expensive to be injury cover.

The Twin dream will not come I think

I thought B McKay was a lock for the Bombers. He'd be a decent fit for us as second banana, wouldn't have thought we had the cap space though. Injury history the biggest concern with him.

Must disappoint the local supporters though?
It would disappoint the local supporters but surely none of them would say ‘hey don’t be so selfish to go and earn $100k per year with potential for multiples of that. You need to keep your job as a barista and earn nothing from your talents in GAA so we can enjoy watching…’

Of the top of my head, our worst recruiting decisions in recent years have been high-profile, high $ contracts for players with injury histories.

Williams - recruited with achilles problem
Daisy - recruited with serious ankle problem
McGovern - patchy for last couple of years at Adel
Martin - patchy for last couple of years at GC

Granted, some of these had new, unrelated injuries at Carlton. But still.... It's bad business paying big $ for something that is also a big risk.

You're paying for best case scenario. And opening yourself up to worst-case scenario. I can't think of a stupider recruiting strategy...

If you want to pick up a player with a long injury history on the hope his injuries disappear, do so on cheap, rookie/delisted players.

Fergus Greene, Nakia Cockatoo, Nathan Kreuger, Max Lynch, Jye Caldwell, Aiden Bonar, Harley Bennell

If they work out, GREAT! If they don't, it doesn't break the bank.

TL;DR - DON'T PAY BEST IN SHOW MONEY FOR A FIXXER UPPER.

EDIT: Admittedly, Ben McKay has played the majority of matches from 2021-23
great point. I didn't mind the Martin one because we had plenty of space and he didn't cost us draft capital.

And I don't think overall he was paid THAT much.

I'd take Mckay. Kemp/McGovern/Marchbank all undersized play the third tall intercept role.
Durds to be delisted which leaves only Young so we need another KPD.
Ben is a decent player he's just played in a shocking team his entire career who's defence is constantly under siege. He'll flourish in a better setup alongside Weiters.
He'll also have the competitive drive training alongside his brother. Trust me when you have brothers around the same age as you, competition is a major motivator.

Edit. Also we can still hit the draft as expected. The picks we'll likely get for Dow and Fisher will ensure that.

Tangent, sure but I think the vast, vast majority of GAA fans would rather keep the system there as it is and continue to lose a couple of players over introducing professionalism to the set up.

31 counties compete in the football and 17 in the hurling, similar numbers with the women’s football and Camogie (women’s hurling), with a lot fielding sides in both sports.

If professionalism came in players would simply jump over to the richer counties (it’s hard enough to beat Dublin as it is) and with county bodies having to pay out for pro lists in both sports, there would be zero money left over to fund the grassroots games at all which they do amazingly and always have. It really is nothing like any other sporting set up in the world, if you get the chance to be over there for a bit of time, really recommend you immerse yourself in it as much as you can.

There is a big debate which could be had here on the primacy of the individual over community, and how adverse effects such as family dysfunction, drug abuse, homelessness, and mental health can be linked to the gutting of communities by engines of liberal capital. It is a particularly acute issue in rural and regional communities, and for those of us who come from them.

For the moment, I am happy to say that I can appreciate Thylacine’s unease with the situation. Though I dare say that we will both be barracking hard for the Irish boys to make it when they arrive on our shores.
just a small stretch to suggest the control and limitation of an individual's legal actions results in a net benefit to society.

Plenty of examples of that ideology being followed and failing miserably

Plenty of examples of individual rights being followed to the detriment of wider society too. No hard and fast rules. But taking young men out of their local community while in their prime is deleterious to that community. And I think that’s Thylacine’s main point.

If it could be worked, is B McKay worth 660,000 a year?

We are trying to get under the cap/cut costs, especially with TDK re-signing..

We won't be bringing in anyone on fairly big money in the F/A or trade period, I would presume.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think Ben is that good.

If he came on the cheap, then sure. I don't think he'll be cheap and therefore would be outside the parameters for us to recruit him.

Harry got all the pace and agility. Ben has the turning circle of an 89 Pajero.

Club has openly said we are going to the draft this year a few times now. Both Cook and Lloyd, as recently as last week.

Why are we even discussing [PLAYERCARD]Ben Mckay[/PLAYERCARD], we can't afford him from a $$$ perspective and any trade scenarios
Just go to the draft and continue to focus on our needs

e.g. Motlop the previous year for a small fwd
and lots of runners last year

Reckon we're more likely to sign Liam McMahon as a free agent than Ben McKay.
I don't know who that is yet I still agree.........

It’s a no on B.McKay but I could see him at the Hawks freeing up Scilly

Think we have the balance good at the moment in defence
