Sam will be a gun but I reckon Smillie will be pretty prominent in year 1.

He said obviously why these 190cm + mids are so useful is the reach, and ability to get first hands from the ruckman. But he said the thing that sets these big 190cm+ mids up for success is how good they are at the ground ball. Tom Green for his size is unbelievable below his knees, averaging an elite number (9) of groundballs a game. Same with Cripps. Same with Bont.

When he is getting the first possession, like he did in the CTL, he's something we haven't had.

If the kicking is legit, which I think it is, having been going back and watching whatever I can, he's got the potential to be better than Tom Green. It elevates him to having superstar potential. His action is great, he pulls off some unbelievable kicks, I think with increased reps across his career it will become more and more consistent, and that blows the lid off what he can become as a player.

Re how he was high-low-fiving a la cotch: reminds me a bit of Rance's first preseason when he had a little go at Richo for not running past the white line during a drill. Obviously not comparing Smillie and Rance as players but seemingly some similarities in leadership and their will to succeed from day 1

Thanks, guess they sort of had to get a lot of lads from the same area given the amount of picks and access to 17yo.

We're definitely better off though as none of this crop has to uproot and sever themselves from their support networks.

I hope everything you've suggested regarding Smillie happens, I just wish we as supporters would hold back on the hype a little at times. I've lost count of the amount of players who have looked great on the training track but have not delivered in games.

Yeah agree. Jagga should be favourite IMO, because you just know he'll rack it up like he always does and Blues should be top 4.

We are smart drafting VIC talent early in the build as they won’t go anywhere. Then later stage/contending you grab anyone. The connection these kids have could have a Penrith Panthers type of vibe about it.

Yep, all these boys know each other to some degree, with most of them having at least one good mate they've played with drafted alongside them.

Hard to see any of them wanting to leave that behind unless they're not getting opportunity or they're offered insane money that we can't match.

Pointing out a load of positives about a player we should be excited about doesn’t render you, as a reader, unable to remain critical and measured. You’re not a baby. Acknowledging superstar potential doesn’t mean I’ve labelled him a superstar—potential exists before it’s delivered in games; that’s why it’s called ‘potential.’
