I think for too long we've been too nice in list management. We've kept guys around for far too long based on the on paper benefits, and the idea that "if they can just get a run at this they'll pay off" type of mindset. Several guys who have played for a long time seemingly promise a lot but deliver minimal.

We at least started to move on some of these types last yr, but realistically it's a good 2 years too late. Yeah, the 3 or 4 games a year where they actually do the thing everyone says they're capable of are great, but they aren't enough to build a team around. Despite that, we still persisted despite being repeatedly let down.

A stronger team would've set the standards and made the cuts early, instead we've let them embed into our culture and become senior players.

We won’t be a million ahead as we are not the team paying 1.7, our max offer is closer to 1.1 I believe

That’s not what i meant. Im talking on how the AFL will view the compensation if we added a FA, as they say compo is worked out on a net loss.

We lose a player for $1.7M
We gain a player for $700,000

Still a net loss of $1M

TDK is out of our hands but before we bother trading out anyone I think you actually look to who you can get in the door first. Wardius, Rosas, Wicks, pick your own names who have attributes we are missing.
GWS is probably the best team to be talking to because they have been recruiting how we should’ve been. Plenty of those speedy HF types who might want opportunities if we are willing to back ourselves and part ways with future picks.

JSOS is a perfect example of an answer to a problem which didn’t look likely. There are more out there and you don’t need to spend a fortune to find them, just hope like hell Austin is good enough to.

I'm not a VFL Track watcher but keen an eye on the stats now and then, and I've liked what I've seen on the stat sheet and in the odd report about Hudson Okeefe.

With Pitto under contact I wouldn't hate Pitto as no.1 with HOK playing as the #2 at times or as the fill in for injury. I don't think we're as dire at ruck without TDK as some suggest, unless I'm wrong about HOKs potential.

Jagga and Cody Walker will turn us around literally overnight.

As much as this will probably be true, that is 20 months away from happening. I’d rather be a good footy side today, and then add Jagga to the mix. Rather than a side that needs a rebuild of 10+ players.

We need a big clean out at the bottom end of our list but the problem is that we don't have the draft picks. I would happily clean out 10 players if it meant we had 10 picks in the first three or four rounds and really hit the draft hard.

Our issues is our list build. The game has moved to a style of footy where you need to be able to run your opposition down and you absolutely must be able to run with the footy.

The top end of our list aren't the issue, they are the ones we need to build around and build good skills and pace around and we have failed to do that.

Give me some Beau McCreary, [PLAYERCARD]Ed Richards[/PLAYERCARD] and [PLAYERCARD]Nick Blakey[/PLAYERCARD] types and watch Carlton completely turn it around. Then you will start to get much much more out of your top end players. Our issue is we seem to be recruiting with no directing.

A lot of the senior recruits were probably not overly sort after by opposition teams because many of them lack pace and/or kicking skills and teams have been moving away from that. That's probably how we got them.

There is a lot on list management to get this right and going with big numbers through the draft and getting things right is probably the answer. I just don't know how we are going to get the picks.

I'm praying for us to win a GF but this theme of we have to do it now for Cripps is just BS.
Also the talk of trading our Harry or Sam, why not Charlie?
Charlie does not chase, does not tackle and does not show any leadership.
We've also tanked H's value & inflated Charlie's with how we play them.
If we're looking for a big haul, which there's nothing to say that we are, it's Charlie that likely goes out.

Harry would definitely still be worth 2 very good 1st rounders. On his day he is great but gee he has some stinkers. The difference between his best and worst is so far it’s not funny. I don’t blame the club for this, this is his own doing.

Finish last next year ...

It is short term hell for long term gain imo.

Imagine 2027...

...

We will sky rocket back up.
Another wooden spoon is part of your solution. Let me tell you that failure is not a solution. How did all the number 1 picks we have had over the years fix the rabble that is the CFC?

There is no long term gain by embracing failure. CFC needs a Board and CEO whose first and most important priority is winning flags. For too long CFC has forgotten its purpose.

Probably missed the boat but would not blame TDK for taking the money. It's life changing.

I think the fastest way to improve list balance is trade Charlie. Charlie will get you 2 top 10 picks for sure. I also am partial to send Charlie to Brisbane for Darcey Wilmot & Logan Morris.

Lots of talk here about us being too old and lots of players being 31, 32 next year, Weits, Harry and Charlie turning 29 next year and we need to bring in young players, whilst most of its true, lots seem to ignore that Collingwood in 2023 became the oldest side to win a GF taking the record off Geelong who won it the season before, Brisbane last year had an average age of 26.5, Richmond in 2020 had an average of just over 27.

This is a good point and something that I've missed.

I was speaking to one of my old colleagues in the US (he's still scouting for Houston, tough playoff exit this year) overnight and part of what he said was:

"Modern sports science has revolutionized how we view aging in basketball. The old belief that players, especially small guards, are 'past it' by their early 30s is outdated. With advanced training and recovery methods, careers are extending well beyond traditional age limits. Significant injuries, not age, and change of life focus and better talent coming into the league is what typically end careers now."

Your Geelong and Collingwood examples are good pointers of the same happening in the AFL.

Regardless, list profile is important and I feel we've gone too far the other way this year -- too many unproven players on the list. It should sort itself out long-term though.

Harry and carltons 2025 3rd rd pick ( need points to rort the system again for Annable )

Henry Smith and Bruce Reville Brisbane's 2025 first rd pick
Brisbane's 2026 second rd pick ( pts to match fs and academy)

TDK to Saints compo pick

Carlton lose Harry yes.

But Reville has speed and is a good ball user from the wing or hhf which would compliment the inside runt the blues have.
Smith would be playing senior football this season if not for injury.
[PLAYERCARD]Max Gawn[/PLAYERCARD] rates him extremely high after playing against him last season i think the kid is a gun and rumour has it Vic clubs are sniffing around already looking to secure him long term.
He would fill the TDK hole.
Blues would have an offensive outside ball user in Reville plus 2 first this year to take to the draft and salary cap to burn.
I'm not sold on [PLAYERCARD]Oscar Allen[/PLAYERCARD] and think Harry would thrive in Brisbane's playing Joe's role and not being in the Vic media bubble.

Thoughts on Walsh - is he a keeper or should we be eying out a trade for him.....before his back issues get worse?

What would we receive for him if he was to be traded?
If the price was right then yep!
It would be nice to do a Bryce Gibbs-like deal(10 & 16??) Weiters would be the only oldie that I wouldn't consider trading.
We really need to be more ruthless with player retention, keeping fading veterans, trading before all value is lost.

Smith and Reville would not hold any value in a trade for Harry McKay. Your first round pick this year will also likely push out to 20-25+ due to how compromised the draft is. That package would not be close to what I would accept if I was willing to let Harry go. Giving the Lions Harry would almost guarantee them the next three flags.

We were incredibly lucky to receive 2x1st rounders for Gibbs

Forgotten tge name of their list manager at the time but he got schooled big time 🤦‍♂️
