AFL Player 5: Elijah Tsatas

So he’s good at getting the
Football and doing nothing with it. That’s hardly a strength. If he was good at getting the footy and setting another guy into space or hitting a target by foot he’d be in the team already.

It's easier for a young player to improve their skills with the ball in their hand than being without.

Case in point; Jobe Watson. Was bad with the ball but improved because he got a lot of it.

Also why are we judging a young player on how well he can push a player out of the best 23? Most players at his stage either get given senior games to improve with because they're recruited by teams with no experienced mids or they don't earn their spot in mature teams until way later.

Tsatas was decent in the VFL, but he's still only fringe - might be bench or sub.
He really needs to be tested on the wing or half back at VFL to work on his deficiencies. Getting 30+ disposals isnt helping, but getting 5+ tackles is. He needs to be tested on the outside with more time with his kicking, and to use his height to be a marking midfielder in VFL.

There is potentially an AFL spot on the wing up for grabs - with Duursma injured. only Clarke + Lual ahead of him.

If he asked to play wing in VFL and got 30 plus kicked a couple of goals, that might give him a chance for AFL game.
Also gives chance to show that his tank is ok, as Wingers usually run the most in a game pushing forward and back into defence.

As a centre square mid he's behind - Merrett, Caldwell, Durham, Setterfield, Parish, Martin
And on par with Perkins, Hobbs and Shiel

Cinotta, Jordan, though and finn are all tough footballers

Can’t see Tsatas as a negator. Not worked that way.

Endurance also an issue - very limited aerobic capacity.

Whats the loss in giving it a go before he could depart years end?

Aerobic ability arguably easier to improve then kicking

I turned on the TV on the third quarter, and saw this passage of play that I think the coaches will want to see improve before he gets a chance at the next level. There are about 4 things in a row where he doesn't really commit, the chase the contest, the tackle and the smother. Frankston are 20m off the goal line, and the win is within reach - that is the point where you've really got to fight.

He reads the ball/play well - if he gets a bit more confidence in his (big) body, he could put a lot more pressure on those situations.

Should have been a free kick for front on contact so don't blame him for not going hard enough there but not going for the loose ball after that was like watching Cam Newton not dive on the fumble in the Superbowl.

I’d give him a run of games but not as a negator.

Give him a stretch doing what he does and see how it goes. Cant be worse than the drivel Parish has been serving up.

He reminds me a lot of Parish, I take it as their nature is to keep themselves in a position to collect the ball, not necessarily contest the man.

Keeping his feet and not hitting that marking contest means he's staying in a position to collect the ball, even if it's not what the team needs in that moment.

you might be right, perhaps he is thinking of corralling and It’s hard to judge in the moment, but a Durham or Dursma gets to that contest and is going for the ball and not the player. Potentially a worse result of front on contact, or another free - but that 37 seconds of play looks uncompetitive.

How much more evidence do we need to see to know the inside of midfield is purely an exposure role? Almost like the ruck.

Pies gave Ned Long the role, he went from a non entity to a fixture, Sheldrick has been given a shot and run with it, Matt Johnson the same, Peatling, Hugo Garcia, Freijah, on and on and on.

It’s a simple matter of playing a lot of minutes.

Doesn’t it depend on what the deficiency is? I don’t know if more exposure fixes a flawed kicking technique unless the flaw is caused by a lack of composure with ball in hand

lack of composure could be linked to lack of security in the team

there are many effective players around the league with "flawed" kicking techniques. just play him ffs
