Recap at a glance:
  • Harley Reid has signed a two-year extension, which keeps him at West Coast until at least the end of 2028.
  • He still has one season left on his rookie deal, the new extension kicks in for 2027.
  • Cal Twomey reports that the deal could reach up to $2m per year if Harley triggers all incentives (e.g. this is not a base $2m per year deal).
  • This is a straight two year extension, with no player option for a +9 or anything similar.
  • Get a big dog up ya, Victoria.

No joke Baz from Tongala was just on SEN again, reckons there are whispers doing the rounds at the local pub and footy club that the Reid family are having a garage sale on Saturday.

He also said he saw Mrs Reid making signs out of cardboard with balloons on them, he assumed they were garage sale signs that she'll hang up around town

I can only imagine the melties if they move down to Geelong 😬

Announcement to be made 1 hour before the derby. We proceed to go out and thrash them ruining their finals dream. Harley has 30 and 3.

They'd likely hold off until the next day after the team gets belted to make sure we don't burn down HQ.

Here is what I hope they try to negotiate.

Using rumoured $$

Current offer
2+9 23 mill
First 2 yrs 4 mill
Last 9yrs 19mill

I hope we try to do a front load counter offer
3 + 8 23mill
First 3 yrs 9mill
Last 8 yrs 14mill

As it seems we are taking on the all risk, overpay hugely for 3 yrs at 3 mill a year now until the end of 2029 while we have the cap space to do so seems prudent. Then if he stays the last 8yrs his cap portion is reduced to 1.8/yr which will allow us to pay the other guns we have on our list.

Thr thing is, when that 3 years ends and he has 8 years 14mil vs 8 years 20mil at Vic clubs, that +8 year option isnt going to be worth anything, it'd just be security for reid if he gets injured or something.

We would have to increase the pay on the 8 years by then to keep him around.

Not worth going up to 3mil per year if we are still going to be paying market rate for the +8years anyway

problem with that is other clubs will pay him more then that after 29. so it just makes his decision to leave easier.
The 8 or 9 year option has to still be $$$. not ideal i know.

i dare say if we have more cap front the likes of elijah etc now, get them on long contracts too.

I listen to afl daily (yes I know it's shit, but there's limited daily shows and it's the right length for the drive to work) and there's not been a peep about Harley and the contract. Not sure what it means but it's interesting.

Id counter that logic using Brad Hill at freo example. Front loading only increases likelihood that he leaves. Imagine at end of 3 years, someone offers 10 years @ $20m, you think he will just let that pass because club decided to front load?

front load nothing until big extension. then front load. In many ways, signing for 2 years may be better because he can then be front loaded a little when we still have cap space.

Where the contract finally settles will be interesting.

Length of total contract
Length of fixed term v optional
Payment total
Payment distribution - front loading etc

I'm also interested in the following intangibles.
Internal and external pressure on HR and WCE - as an aside seems managers dodge these two bullets & individual player and club wear any flak.
Perception amongst team mates.

Brings to mind that classic Angels song "No way, get f**d, f**k off !"
Not going to happen.
Announcement made within days according to popular (or unpopular) media?
