Recap at a glance:
  • Harley Reid has signed a two-year extension, which keeps him at West Coast until at least the end of 2028.
  • He still has one season left on his rookie deal, the new extension kicks in for 2027.
  • Cal Twomey reports that the deal could reach up to $2m per year if Harley triggers all incentives (e.g. this is not a base $2m per year deal).
  • This is a straight two year extension, with no player option for a +9 or anything similar.
  • Get a big dog up ya, Victoria.

I really doubt north were trying seriously, they didn't even have the best offer. Their issue was that they were trying to have their cake and eat it too - get Harley while still having a top 3 pick on top.

I look forward to the Vic media bashing Hawthorn for offering such an obscene contract, the same way they were tearing us to shreds for the mere thought of agreeing to the 2+9 offer.
We're all a bit sensitive on this board. It's actually good list management that Hawthorn has that kind of cash available given they're a young team that finished a game out of the top 4.

That's not true, a deal was all but done between Eagles, North and Demons and going into the draft day the two Vic clubs were under the impression it was happening, Eagles had a meeting the night before and made the decision to draft Reid leaving the Vic clubs surprised.

Thats when Phil kicked down the door, took a dump on the meeting room table, and told Nizzy that if they don't draft Harley, then Nizzy will have to lick it up.

Nizzy tried to squirm out of it by pointing out there were two Nizzy's in the room ain't that right Toddy? But Phil was having none of it.

Simmo/Ryno said after the fact that a deal never really got close though

Unlucky Hawks, looks like he wasn’t quite so desperate to come to you as your posters thought. The Big Dipper how are those receipts coming champion?

He's been reacting to things on the hawks board but no posts since before Harley signed. Waiting for the heat to die down I suppose.

And then everyone clapped

Yeah wouldn't really call Hawthorn young...

It did. They may not want to admit that openly but it did. I have it from a very good horses mouth on that one and I'll back that to the grave.

It did or your sources at Norf just thought it did?

Highly doubt a club like West Coast is changing their entire list management strategy the night before the draft.

If they secured Harley they would have been offloading players to get the capital to trade for him. So you can't assume they actually have the space as of right now.

It may be one of the reasons they pulled out of the Oscar chase pretty early.

People can believe what they want. I know what I do.

Unless the deal included 2+3, it doesn't really change the narrative.

What was the deal?

Maybe, since we don't know I wouldn't criticise because surely as a club that's what we are aiming to do ourselves.

Be a high performing team that has space to strengthen their list. Geelong whilst being perennially top 4 has been able to pay Dangerfield and Cameron, players that were top 5 in the comp when recruited.

So.. as I said, it was set up for Norf to swap 2+3 for Harley, but North refused.

Hence trying to get other deals across the line. I think the Eagles would have taken 2+3

Once Eagles decided on taking Reid I doubt 2+3 would have swayed it. Don't think it was any extra negotiation tactics to get North to fold.
