Maybe sit down and think on how one more bye week does not provide an extra broadcast weekend?

What do you think Opening Round is?

It’s essentially a “bye week” to open the season.

The AFL doesn’t have true bye rounds anymore where no one plays. They stagger the byes over multiple weekends so that there’s always footy on.

Thats why everyone hates opening round. You’re essentially starting the season with a “bye round”

The fact that many posters seem to hate Opening Round makes me love it more.

Can't wait for it.

Dillon is a genius.

How? Going into October would push back the start of the cricket season. The grass is about to hit growing season - we need wickets roped off asap!

I know - I get it! I edited my response before you replied.

Leaving now…

Wowzer, some clubs there with a lot more members than I had expected.
Not sure what the average membership is but mine is 360$, multiply that by the total amount of members.
Mind boggles.

Whenever I see these numbers, I’m always amazed at West Coast. I know why they have a huge membership (first AFL club in a footy mad state) but I don’t understand how they maintain the numbers through years of being crap. And their fans are like us - they always turn up even when the team is struggling.

Has a minor premier ever fallen in a screaming heap as dramatically as this? They’ve virtually conceded Friday night already

No minor premier has gone out in straight sets in the final 8 or final 6 eras.

You have to go back 42 years to North Melbourne in 1983 to find a minor premier failing to win a final. Not only did North go out in straight sets but they were thrashed by 40 points and 86 points in their two games!

Pretty sure everybody understands extra broadcast weekend

Not sure how many fans were saying it was a compelling need
I’d say having a fully engaging and exciting first round of the season knocks the extra broadcast weekend into a cocked hat.

An extra broadcast week is another week of advertisers paying for ads, another week of Foxtel and kayo subscriptions, another week of newspapers paying for stories, etc

I personally like having a shorter wait between finals and footy kicking back off again.

I just like the extra week of footy to watch. It's not that difficult a concept to grasp.

An earlier start by 7 days would have zero effect on player readiness.

What's in a name? Think it is now referred to as Opening Round anyway?
would we play on a friday or saturday twilight game.... im confused

Dillon is a genius.

The reason they probably hate it is that it opens the season with an away game that we typically lose.

Which is a bit irksome after being wound up by exciting new recruits. And superstars training the house down, breaking PBs, and having their best pre-season ever.

If the AFL is going to send us interstate to start the season they could at least have us win the game. Maybe have every team (except Carlton) win their R0 / R1 game to give all AFL fans hope and excitement for the season ahead?

Maybe just Sack Dillon and put me in charge already.

The whole point is not requiring an extra round of play from the players.
Irrespective of the overall number of rounds, the primary issue here is that not all teams play. One or more teams getting additional byes isn't exactly a great way of creating equity and consistency.

I fear that if you were running the joint, the meetings might go a wee bit longer.
