Nine years ago, almost to the week, in his own drive for success and with scant regard for the heart and soul of his club, Brad Scott ripped the guts out of North Melbourne when he unceremoniously, prematurely and brutally sacked four club legends (Harvey, Petrie, Firrito and Dal Santo) thereby consigning the Roos to a decade of misery. They are yet to recover.
With that on his resume is it really any surprise that players like Draper, Ridley and now Merrett are not really hurrying to pledge loyalty to the playing group that he leads.

Level it completely and build a monument, have it serve as a reminder to spend more time focusing on your future then your past! Or make it a car park, the airport is screaming out for more space!
And where do * re allocate too ,
The bowls club won’t let them go back to windy hill ?

Scott is the problem. Only knows how to play the victim.

When our captains and legends wanted to move on, Mitchell himself to the Eagles, Hodge to Brissy (With retirement in the middle), we just facilitated the change out of loyalty.

Who would wanna play for this guy...

What's on the table for Essendon if they release him?
Fans are probably 'seemingly up in arms' because Mitchell is pretty disliked amongst Essendon fans

Not much

Essendon are in a weak bargaining position. I would say untenable, Merrett wants out and he wants Hawthorn. I would imagine Hawthorn will trade the Worpel compensation pick.

that's cause west coast got some good stuff to trade, how you feel if Cripps wanted to meet Collingwood?
Unlike JSOS, Cripps has broken his back for the club, so the vitriol for example to Silvagni wouldn’t necessarily be analogous to what Cripps would cope.

Tbf, I hate the pies and it’d sting if he went there for that reason. But if Cripps met with the Cats then I wouldn’t begrudge him. Bloke deserves some success.

precisely, hawks and bombers share that kind of hate.

Is Merrett wants to leave for my Hawks or another team Essendon should do it. He doesn't owe them anything. Letting him languish on a shit team for his entire career would be such a waste, and completely unfair to him.

Let’s be real, even if Scott never torched those North legends, Merrett would still be looking for the exit. It’s less about loyalty and more about not wanting to waste a career under Brad Scott.

I don’t think it’s about ethical obligation so much as working out whether - as an unhappy leader - he is worth more to Essendon, or whether the picks are worth more.

If I were Essendon, I’d strongly consider courting a third club in Victoria. Someone like the Dogs

Mental gymnastics and revisionist history in one post - very impressive!

Mitchell, Hodge and Lewis were all summarily shipped off by Clarko once he felt they were past their used by date. They only wanted to leave because they were told their time was up. To dress it up as an act of "loyalty" is offensive.

only 1 club per season can hold the premiership cup... i hope his time machine is serviced because hes gonna need it to choose the right club!

It’s not a betrayal if he signed on based on being presented a vision for the club which has subsequently changed. That being, the club is now rebuilding and that won’t have been the vision he was sold when he signed on.

I think it’s all fair game. Him looking to get out and Essendon keeping him to his contract.

Smart move by Merrett. Hawks are going places, Essendon making a bee line for the spoon. Bloke has given 10+ years to this basket case team, I reckon he deserves the chance to have some success.

Some would say he could have easily looked for another side instead of extending with Essendon. It was always going to be a high risk Essendon wouldn’t be going anywhere quickly.

He’s being paid very very well to extend as well. One of the higher paid players in the league. Even more bitter pill if it’s a front loaded deal.

Plenty of players move with time still on their contracts. Merrett's been hung out as the' bad guy, a dog move by him' Think the media is giving him a pretty hard time about something that happens multiple times every year
