The last bit is what annoys me. Smith also missed games for the same reason. Day was a bad mistake.yeah happy to have him as depth I just would not of had him infront of gallop or the fort/mcinerney duo, he should of only played when oscars back became a problem, he offered just about nothing and prevented games into gallop
I dont think I'd be too embarrassed by losing to the Suns now, they are turning into a good side as they finally experienced. I'd probably be more upset at being straight setted than who we lost to.We were missing Kiddy & Linc last year too and won the Grand Final by 10 goals.
Realistically, I don't think Gardiner is a world away from what Payne was able to do last finals series (midway through the third quarter against the Giants, some Lions fans never wanted Payne to play again).
As for Noz, he's definitely a big loss, but the Grand Final last year was only his fourth or fifth game back in the side after being a fringe player for a long time. So it's not entirely accurate to call him a vital cog.
You're absolutely right about the forward line though. That is the biggest difference. Turning Joe & Eric into a battered Oscar and a very green Ty is an enormous downgrade. To make a dent in this finals series, we're going to need something very special from one or more of Logan, Kai, Charlie, Cam or Zac.
Above all else though, it would be humiliating to be knocked out by the Suns. They are a lot better, but they are not a great football side yet. Reckon Collingwood will demolish them if they get through.
I don’t see how saying we weren’t ready yet is doomer, nor do I recall saying we shouldn’t have traded for Neale. I did say Noble broke from his plan to go to 3 consecutive drafts.I'd give this post more credence if I'd seen it 6 weeks ago.
The doomer gimmick was fine in 2019-2022 where you'd pop up and accurately indicate we weren't a finished product and (less accurately) SHOULDN'T have done the neale trade.
As I've said I think this year is done and we could well lose to Gold Coast but I'm not taking any serious criticism out of last week into this week or going forward.
Our way of play has been very, very successful and yeah Kingy can pull vision of things going badly last week and make very broad conclusions but frankly we were just beaten in fundamentals of contest and structure.
Its an overall aberration this season (the pies loss was as bad, the suns loss was purely built on ridiculous goalscoring from clearance so not comparable) and I don't think there's anything to take away longterm.

Edit: turns out I did say it.
I'm having concerns our season will end in whimper tomorrow night.
Briz baits people?Briztoon isnt phrasing it like that though
Hes baiting people into a conversation where he can set up "I told you so" when we lose
heck some people have a sh!tty way of reading things here. I rarely pull the I told you so card. Pretty sure I've got it reserved for one WC poster. I'm flat out remembering what I posted yesterday, let alone who knows how long ago, to pull out a "I told you so", and that's not even taking in to account I'd have to remember who the poster is I'd be saying "I told you so" to.Briztoon isnt phrasing it like that though

How many times? Seeing as I didn't even remember the one time you've already found.Briz's doomer take is historical. Consistently from 2019-mid2023 he'd pop up bemoaning list deficiencies and us giving up on rebuilding through the draft by doing the Neale trade.
Yeah, that's the point I've been making though. We're also capable with a full squad of playing significantly better footy than the Suns.
There's really no need to dwell on the negatives. We've had many incredible performances this season without relying on all of our best 22 to all fire at once
Plus it's a final, anything can happen. As Lions supporters we should know that better than most

Nor do I bait people here. On the free for all trade baords, sure.
Briz baits people?
Briz?
Interesting… I haven’t noticed Briz baiting anyone.
I’ve seen plenty of others try to bait, Nathan.
Can you think of anyone else?

Me too, sometimes I have to search back through my own posts to see if I am repeating myself ad nauseam.. and I still do it occasionally.Yeah, I've got a case of man flu atm, and my meds really hit me in the evening sometimes. You were absolutely bottling the spuds on the D&T board yesterday. It was beautiful to read.
Here, here! briztoon is alright. This is a tense situation and anything can happen in football. Watching the Geelong game play out was disheartening, even more so for those of us who were there. I have no problem with someone posting that they are worried we might lose. Their concerns are legitimate. On the flip side, there are people like me who believe the Suns are going to lose and lose big. It’s just a personal belief, or feeling, if you like. Hard to argue against someone’s feeling about how something will play out.
Lions by lots.
Sadly for you Briz I remember way too much about Bigfooty arguments that I've had. I will say in a lot of spots you don't say that we shouldn't have traded for Neale. How many times? Seeing as I didn't even remember the one time you've already found.
I don’t disagree with this.
But people had to realise this came at an opportunity cost, and put a time limit on our window.
Noble continually said we needed to go to three drafts, and accrue as much high end talent as possible.
We didn’t do this. We hit the 2016 and 2017 drafts. Sold our 2018 draft for Neale.
Then made finals which denied us the chance of adding more high end talent, and to make matters worse, we traded out of the first round of the 2019 draft in a deep draft, for a future pick in a weak draft (based on that drafts U16 championships).
Then we traded our two first round picks in the 2020 draft for a single pick in 2021, in another bad trade.
What that has left us with is a genuine talent gap between the Rayner/Bailey/Starcevich in the 2017 draft and last year’s draft of Wilmot and Lohman in 2021.
As has been mentioned in the Melbourne review thread, we have a lack of good to elite kicks out of defence and in the midfield.
This makes it easy for oppositions to focus on defending our better kicks, so it forces the ball to our poorer kicks and then oppositions rebound the turnover.
Wilmot, Lohman, Ashcroft and Fletcher won’t be coming in to compliment a winning team. They’ll be coming in to replace old, retiring players, or replacing less talented players.
And we’ll still have two main issues, lack of young developing KPP’s and no genuine midfield depth.
Also, a lot of that comes back to us going a year early on Neale.
I’m not criticising the trade, but we compromised on David Noble’s strategy of going to three consecutive drafts with strong hands.
We should have one more crop of players from the 2018 draft, which we don’t have.

But you sure do like to bring up the downside of not having a top end pick in the 2018 draft a lot!

(in fairness you don't say we shouldn't have traded for Neale here.. but you do say it was 'Unfortunate' that Noble deviated).

It’s one thing to get a spoil against a bigger guy or whatever but getting outmarked by a 178cm Miers is inexcusableThere's a lot of confirmation bias when this happens to our players. It's really not that uncommon if the kick isnt to the talls advantage and the small uses his body well (borderline illegally).
Even Zorko spoiled Ben King that one time when he should've gone harder at the footy
Man, you must hold on to a lot of stuff. Or have a shed load of stuff bookmarked. Or too much time. I think Tom is using the search function, and not properly vetting some of the posts he's cutting and pasting. One is clearly from the West Coast board.Hot dang Tom is KEEPING RECEIPTS
