Hot take: I always wonder if the AFLW crowds narrative is a victim on the success the men have pulling crowds because it feels like AFLW still pulls bigger crowds then NRLw and ALw for stand alone games… (not sure about wbbl)

I think in part this, and a few other things that people werent ready for.

The first game lockout seems to have also set the bar extremely high in what some people's expectations are.
To add my simpleton take I see the charm in using the suburban spiritual home grounds for games, but they're also usually less accessible than larger grounds so would deter some attendance. And for Melbourne Casey is neither a historic ground nor close to much at all.

Who thinks that Bri Davey will call time in a few weeks at seasons end i do.
Kind of feeling shes hasnt got it in her anymore.
Missed 2 aflws as well.
Last played some 2 years ago.
Saying time to call time.
Thanks for your services.
Thinking she will gain a role in the media like alot of the others.
Bri will be great on Fox sports.
I wish her well.

Who thinks Collingwood AFLW will be no longer after this aflw.
I think it should relocate.
Maybe could relocate to tasmania.
Like to see a tassie aflw team home ground at Launceston.
I think tho Collingwood it really never took off at the Pies.
Just has no players that can play the game.
Like the thought of the Launceston Pies.
I think its will go the same as the Collingwood netball team myself now its the Mavericks.
Be good to see Collingwood pull out of it.
Time to relocate i think.
Just has not worked out sadly.

What would be the point of putting a standalone women's team in Launceston when Tasmania Devils will be entering their own AFLW team sometime in the future?

Tasmanians aren't going to get behind a relocated team from Victoria, even if it's no longer aligned with an existing AFL club.

Why would the afl fold Collingwoods aflw side? lol

I think a lot of people are footied out by this stage and really have no interest in watching anymore for a while. Not sure when the best time is for AFLW but don’t think it’s now
Agreed. I don't know the answer is, but I know I have barely been to a game since it moved to spring, but was a regular when it was early in the year.

Lots of factors at play with scheduling though, and perhaps for others this spring season is the way to go.

Personally the AFLW is actually reviving my love after the game after a pretty underwhelming men's season. Seeing Carlton play a pretty exciting game (the last two weeks aside) has done a lot for me after our men's team had a horror year. But I get that not everyone will feel the same and a lot of fans probably are feeling the fatigue this time of year.

The only thing putting me off watching more games right now is how lopsided the league is and that North winning the flag is basically a foregone conclusion. Sport is meant to be a contest and when the gap between teams is so wide that you know how some games are going to go, it's hard to get excited. That's something that will only improve as the talent pool grows.

Having as many genuinely competitive teams as possible playing attractive footy is the key to getting more fans engaged.
It’s not an accident that there is a disproportionate number of North fans here.

Our boys were crap back in the day when the girls started. Finally having something good happening with my footy club was a great outlet.

How many AFLW games do we go to.

I go to the collingwood and carlton game the season starter
Then another one at Vic park in the season not fussed who we play.
Was at the Pies and Swans game at Vic park.
A one out of the box game for the Pies won it by 29 points was a real surprise.
But attended the carlton one at ikon.
I like ikon to me is best suited to aflw its like set up for it.
Vic park is ok as well but not as good facility wise bit rank there but ok.
Find ikon better done when it comes to aflw.
Which other grounds do aflw well.
Thats about it for me.

I’ve been to 18 games this season, all Essendon’s (glutton for punishment). I really like Kinetic Frankston, Hawks do a great job for fan engagement. Casey Fields is pox, the speakers/sound is beyond ridiculously loud which I hate. RSEA Park is nice and don’t mind going there. Vic Park is alright but a bit of a pain to get to, the couple of Swans games I’ve been to have a surprising amount of support in Melbourne which is great. Haven’t been to Arden St this season due to conflicting fixture. Whitten Oval I like too but it’s very awkward for me to get to.

Only the two for me this season: Hawks vs Blues and Hawks vs Suns, both at Kinetic. I'd have liked to go to more but I'm reliant on public transport to get around and I'm not keen on travelling the city by myself at night. That plus scheduling conflicts makes it hard to go to most games.

"The proposal would allow West Coast to protect a star player like Ella Roberts, or Geelong stop a gun like Georgie Prespakis from being headhunted by Tasmania as its marquee signings.

The number of players a club could protect would be determined on a sliding scale, with sides at the bottom of the AFLW ladder likely to have more access to keep their best players compared to the teams at the top.

However, Tasmania would then be able to sign any unprotected player essentially as a free agent – rather than having to trade for them – regardless of their contract status."

Seems the NRLW was really well done working in with the men's season. Like America does with High School Friday, College Saturday and NFL Sunday and Monday could it be worked in at a locked in time slot say Saturday day with no AFL clash's? Maybe not possible/

You have to fit in 9 games per round, and no more than 2 can be played at the same time. They could maybe fixture 6 games on a Saturday if you did 10am, 12pm, 2pm with the Men's starting at 4pm. Then the other 3 Sunday early

Yep, would not be surprised there is better AFLW growth this year, getting rid of the compressed fixture alone will help. But it’s still miles behind.

I think by this stage it’s fair to say the NRL have got their strategy right and they are leveraging some natural advantages they have.

I think doubleheaders are much easier for them because the games are so much shorter. And maybe what you initially lose by scheduling the seasons at the same time, you may eventually gain back because it helps forge that one club feeling amongst supporters. It feels like they are winning over club supporters really well to their women’s teams.

Just being able to tell a story of how your code is growing strongly and moving forward is really powerful. The NRLW GF having a million viewers is killer.
I actually think the NRL strategy is forced on them by circumstance, and isnt something they got right.

There are more women playing full contact footy than there are people playing Rugby league. At the start of the AFLW and NRLW, female footy participation in Qld dwarfed female participation in League in Qld and NSW combined, and there is almost none outside those states.

But, they had a national team, and footy didnt.

Footy had a pyramid of female participants that was wide at the base, but short, due to a lack of elite pathwys driving a lot of talented athletes away from the sport.

League had a much narrower pyramid, but it was a bit pointier.

The AFLs strategy was to raise the height of the pyramid as fast as possible, because it had the player base to feed into multiple talent pathways in multiple states. As many AFL clubs being involved as soon as possible was the most efficient was to do this, and the AFL always intended the AFLW to stand on its own feet, and has actively avoided double headers for this reason.

The NRLs strategy was to limit the comp as much as possible because they had a small pool of reasonable talent, and then nothing. They limited it so much, it wasn't remotely possible for it to stand on its own feet as an independent comp, instead, they tacked it onto the mens comp. If they didn't imop, it would have disappeared without trace. They did what they did because they didn't think they could leave the field to the AFL, and they had no other viable way to do it, a sign of the weakness of womens RL, not a strength.

If you just value crowd sizes and viewers, put the womens game on before the mens, on the broadcast, have the womens be the lead up to the mens, count both towrds the womens, hey presto, fantastic numbers. Except of course, we would all know the numbers are bogus, like the NRLWs numbers are bogus.

18 games on a weekend will leave them pretty footied out too. And summer doesnt really work, we tried. So?
