If the AFL didn't want clubs to be able to bring a player back after an unexpectedly fast recovery, the rule simply wouldn't exist. Saying "The AFL won't allow it" is not fact, it's guesswork. The fact is that the rule exists and the club could choose to try and use it should they wish. Worst case....the AFL say no and HOF gets an extended recovery, which for a skinny second year KPP might honestly be the best thing for him.

HOF being back to play games would not be an "unexpectedly fast recovery".
ACLs are generally 9-10 month injuries now, and he did his on the 3rd August.
It would be more that there would be problems with his recovery to force him out for the entire season.

We didn't do it this year with Newman because the club thought they were pushing finals and wanted to ensure that a key backline leader would be able to come back and play.

You're asking our medical team to lie on a form submitted to the AFL. It won't happen.

I hope the best for Lij but this doesn't feel me with confidence.

He's decided to be professional once it started looking like he'd be moved on while being contracted.

It's great to hear he is doing well. I have been told similar. At the moment he's in a good spot

Issue for Elijah is he is dealing with something that is sometimes never conquered. It's a serious issue and why I am cautious on him returning. For all the want to play and redeem himself if he comes back too early and fails the ramifications could be dire

The club are treading a fine line with this and in fairness are trying to do the right thing even though he has burned many. The Best thing for him could be to play VFL for us for 12 months (under our guidance) and keep getting better?

This has nothing to do with Footbal ability or whether we need him. A fit and focussed Elijah would be on any list

16 or more months on the straight and narrow means so much more than just a few months of effort

Bottom line this issue isn't a simple one, can change at any moment and can't be fixed quickly

I hope all the best for EH and that he’s is allowed another opportunity.
This could be a great experience and very positive story for our football department.
There are serious life lessons to be learned form unfortunate episodes in life.
As long as GW& CD are connected with the team sentiments and all go forward in unison.

We know he's broken the law previously and that can 100% be forgiven (for the vast majority of laws). If it's a moral issue, where he has betrayed a teammate or group of teammates, I'd say that's a harder one to get past.

Fingers crossed he can train with the club over summer and earn another crack.
I totally agree.

All I'm saying is if the people affected chose to forgive him then I'll accept that and be done with it.

This is the first time in years I am confident the club (being led by CD and GW) will make the right call in regards to EH.
They will do what is best for the club.

The flip side of that argument shouldn't have anything to do with how a player uses recreational drugs & alcohol.
Sure, I get it's a pressure cooker and players are allowed to blow of steam, but there is also the issue of how you do it.
Being a VERY public figure, and going out to popular night spots loaded is not a good idea.

It's the impact they have on society through their behaviour, especially if they are out and involved in the community representing the club.

I've heard an interview on SEN with a coach of the juniors saying that 'nose beers' use is already rife.
I'd put a lot of that down to Muppets like Bailey Smith not giving 2 ****s about who they are influencing/damaging with their man-child mentality social media posts.

Don't know what 'Lij's issues are but if that muppet Smith is openly let off with fines and 'talks' by the AFL, what does that say about it?
Yeh that's it, We don't know what he's done.

Problem is different players get treated differently, Smith has a massive AFL profile and I'm guessing gets away with a lot more than most others.

Are there any differences anymore? Swans are about to put Rampe and Lloyd on their rookie list. Don't think there are any restrictions there
Could be right.

Makes sense for the Hawks to look at Elijah. They have to do something to change up their midfield from 2025 and since they made a pigs breakfast of the trade period and not getting Merritt, EH might be ann option.

Where did you come up with that one? The most diligent bloke on the list who can't be stopped from over-training now has an alcohol problem?
We're projecting Walsh has a potential problem now too?

This place...
Geez we've all leapt to the extremes FFS sake. No over reactions here...

Bigfooty Carlton Tinderbox...

If I have to spell it out... Walsh, likes a beer, goes out, indulges now and again. I didn't say he's a raging alco.
By that logic our entire '87 premiership side should've been in rehab...

SO, he may very well have a beer or 3, but it will be in the presence of his housemate, who apparently has issues.
Would you drink in front of a mate with alcohol issues and trying to get his shit together?

So, if he curbs his drinking habits for 'Lij's sake, that can also be a positive health kick for Walsh.

You're right, this place...

And again...curb his drinking habits?

Try digging up.

Wouldn’t it have made more sense for the Hawks (or any club) to trade for him than draft him? Could have controlled the terms of his contract (e.g 1 year conditional deal at reduced salary) as opposed to the 2 he’ll get if he goes through the ND.

Or just sign him now as a DFA. Rumor doesn't make sense.

Why would you rush back a young kid, let his knee recover.
It's not so much that they would be rushing him back. HOF would have set goals when he got the diagnosis of what needs to be achieved to return. If he hits all of those markers you have to let the kid return. You will destroy him if you don't.

I'm sick of reading about E hollands - has been replaced by two much better players if not 3 ...Club has paid him out and his own brother moved out...and now talk about piushing a genuine 200 gamer off for a years off to 'fit' E hollands in - ridiculous!

The AFL won't allow it.

The Inactive List substitute system isn't designed to be an "interchange" and any attempt by a club to use it in that manner will be thwarted. Furthermore, knowingly stating a player has a season-ending injury when they don't would likely lead to sanctions against the club.

We could have done it last year with Newman and didn't, likely for that reason.
Long term ≠ season ending

I get the connection and potential problem.
Just like trying to give up smoking and living with a casual smoker ... it is dicy and the temptation is always there.
Personally, I am not buying that even a casual drinker/smoker is the right support you require to kick it.
You just don't want to watch it ocurring around you ... simples.
There needs to be zero tolerance to drinking for EH imho.
