Twomey also says we could trade our 2nd pick for Suns future 2nd.

Not sure I like that knowing what Enrico thinks of future 2nds having pissed one up the wall 2 years ago.

The 10% can cause significant impact if it's the "wrong" player.

They are picking skills - of course - but also only partly.

Pickett is reputed to be "quick" but I have not seen any actual results for AFL combine events.

Sam Grlj is top 10 for both 20m and endurance - brilliant for a midfielder or defender.

Oskar Taylor is top 2 for both 20m and agility.

Both of them show those skills in game. So they both have similar or arguably better skills, but in roles that we actually have holes and could do with drafting players IMHO.
I definitely don't want Pickitt
If have a lot ahead of him.
My list of 5 is my preferred choice

Yep might be wise not to get too attached to that incoming future 2nd.

Code Sport Top 30 Mock Draft Here

Probably the ideal result, though still on their board at that selection; Farrow (Rebounding Def) Greeves ("Mid Beast") Mitch Marsh (A great Fwd prospect) and the younger Phillipou, all of whom I think are possibly better fits

That's a mock they did from about 3 weeks ago but in their latest phantom from today they have us with Latrelle Pickett as many others do as well.

I've come to the conclusion that GWS is as good as any club (and better than some) at keeping their draft intentions close hold. The media has thrown so many darts as possible draftees for us, such that you wouldn't be surprised if we took someone who'd been postulated, but then you wouldn't really be surprised if we took someone completely different either.

I have my preferences (Sam Cumming, Sam Grij, Oskar Taylor, Jacob Farrow, Harley Barker), but in the end whoever our team chooses we all hope they do well, become a star, and help us to win premierships.

[EDIT: Added Harley Barker]

I think they have the least success predicting our selections.

I would love Grij to get to us. Im somewhat hopeful. A few of these drafts have Hawks picking him, yet last Friday he wasnt in their plans.

The push for us to be keen on Pickitt that has come late has had to have come from somewhere. Personally, not keen on it.

In Cal's late mail were had talks with hawks about a slight swap to move up. But also chatted about a move back with the cats if all our top guys are gone. So basically hedging our bets.

The Hawks could also shuffle back the order and have had talks with the Giants about a potential flick back for a future second-round pick if GWS was desperate to shift up the board and be able to choose one of Grlj, Pickett or Oskar Taylor.

Geelong is another club who has had discussions with the Giants about a move, which could see the Giants move back several spots to the Cats' selection if their group of players is all gone.

The Giants have firmed as a potential bidder for Sydney Academy prospect Harry Kyle, having met again with him in recent days, while a smattering of bids are all possible in the 15-25 range of the draft including Jai Murray and Beau Addinsall (Gold Coast), Ison (Carlton), Adam Sweid (Essendon), Tylah Williams (West Coast) and Lachie Carmichael (Sydney).

I still feel that Barker is a good chance for us
Add his name to the list (and yes, I'd be happy with him too as a long term candidate).

A bit of an article on Grlj and how he battled with a bit of the spotlight on him. Suspect being so open may have turned some clubs off but on the flip side being a bit off broadway with us might be a good outcome for him if he ends up being our guy:

The teenage speedster had recruiters’ attention, and his enhanced status spread to the media, where Grlj suddenly began seeing his name mentioned. It all became a bit much – and Grlj’s performance suffered.
That led to him approaching former Richmond footballer-turned-sports scientist and high-performance guru David Buttifant, who has worked at various AFL clubs and with Olympic athletes.

They spoke for almost two hours after Grlj admitted to Buttifant that he was struggling.

“I burst onto the scene a little bit at the start of the year, and I wasn’t really used to the media and all the attention that came with that,” Grlj told this masthead.
“I ended up speaking to David Buttifant about focusing on what I can control, and to not really worry about that other stuff. I probably got back to that after the [national under-18] champs, and that’s probably why I played better footy after that.”
Grlj’s is a relatively common story when it comes to prospective AFL draftees.

They deal not only with the pressure they place upon themselves to perform in their draft year, but also the sudden extra attention in the media, and from well-meaning friends, family and schoolmates, plus the potential of leaving home to relocate interstate.
Everyone handles that experience differently, particularly as players bounce between club, school and state commitments, all of which bring their own scrutiny.
Chargers coach Ash Close and Grlj’s Camberwell Grammar School friends were crucial, along with Buttifant, in helping the AFL prospect emerging from his mid-season form battle, when he was frustrated with his inability to impact matches like he wanted to.
“It was a great learning opportunity because that’s the first time I’ve been faced with something like that,” Grlj said.

“I’m pretty proud of myself for being able to come through it and play some decent footy … [but it] definitely can be pretty challenging, especially when things aren’t going your way, and you really want footy to work out.”
Grlj’s Victorian draft peer Josh Lindsay remembers when he started noticing his own name being mentioned more publicly, and thinking it was “pretty cool”.
Grlj, who has Macedonian and Slovenian heritage, is linked as early as Richmond’s top-10 picks, after making a strong impression for the Tigers’ VFL team late in the season.
Hawthorn, GWS and West Coast are other potential landing points after he finished top 10 at the draft combine in the two-kilometre trial and 20-metre sprint.
“Becoming an AFL player is everything I’ve ever wanted in my life since I can remember,” Grlj said.
“To have the opportunity to maybe get picked up is pretty exciting for me.”

Well, that only makes him more likeable to me. Seems to have his head screwed on the right way, and can practice self-reflection to understand that things are not working for him, also to seek help as to why they are not working.

Agree that being out of the massive footy bubble that Melbourne (or Adelaide or Perth) is, and having a couple of years to develop rather than being immediately thrust into trying to rejuvenate a club like the Tigers or win a premiership like at Hawks, might be a good thing for him.

Agree but could see that element of Grlj not appealing to someone like Sam Mitchell.

To me too ... tbf, that's what I have always liked about you, Giant Strides , how you have stayed so calm in the spotlight as Giants moderator

Reading between the lines looks like being 2024 repeated for us.
We trade in a future second from Suns for pick 35.

We then watch the draft proceed and if Grlj still there with Hawks pick we offer our first plus future 2nd to nab him.

Maybe we repeat 24 exaxtly and offer it to move up 1 spot to take a player who would have fallen to us anyway.

JUst thinkin.

Honestly that was my thought too, but it would be moving up two spots this time (NM predicted to trade Carlton's pick between Hawthorn and us).

How is everyone going to feel if we do that ... not for Grlj ... but for Latrelle Picket?

Three recently retired legends will hand a new kit to their respective interstate clubs, with David Swallow, Oscar McInerney and Callan Ward to create iconic pictures next to Gold Coast, Brisbane and GWS' draftees, respectively.

If it gets the players we want Im ok with these strategies.

Its about building a list, not winning trades.

In 23, we wanted Leake and Gothard and got them. (whether they are the right players is a different argument)

If they want a particular player and can get him, great.

Personally I hope it inst for Latrelle, but if it is, well so be it.
