Pretty obvious why. They weren’t certain they would use 4 selections so made sure they got Zac third.Weird draft tbh. Not sure if the logic behind taking McCarthy with a live pick before our last. Hoping we rookie McGuane, because Saxena does absolutely nothing for me and we still have rights to him next year if he doesn’t get rookied by another club anyway.
Not really - our oldies are past their peak, loss of onfield experience will be the issue. They are youthful, but are they any good! There are some big shoes to fill over the coming years.

Why is Saxena preferred over McGuane?I think the club got who they targeted, which doesn't always workout that way. I was surprised we took 3 midfielders, l thought 2 mids, with a key back and McCarthy was the way we would go.
The good thing about Prindable, Swadling and Anderson is that all 3 are ready made for senior footy next year. You would think all 3 will develop quickly at the club.
Happy we got McCarthy via a non bid. Allowing us to get the additional players in. Zac will be a slow burn, but eventually after a few pre-seasons we see the rise of this young man. He definitely has the talent and ability.
The rookie draft will be interesting, if we actually participate, with just the one spot available. If we are picking between McGuane and Saxena, considering we already have brought in 3 mids, you would think Saxena will be the choice, or do we go for a Elliott Duffield type, the developing key back?
You could reverse the question and it would be equally as valid. Why is Saxena preferred over McGuane?
For this same reason, I wouldn’t think we are likely to draft McGuane. Though O’Bree’s comments made it sound like we might. If we didn’t think Saxena was going to be a chance to legitimately impact at senior level next year and that no one was likely to pick him up in the rookie draft, there’s barely any reason for us to commit a Cat B spot to him.
Might as well let him play VFL and develop and keep an eye on him as we’d still have rights to him in next year’s drafts.
Not really - for most of the year McGuane was considered a far more talented player by most here, and therefore likely to be drafted. You could reverse the question and it would be equally as valid.
That remains to be seen, but they'll also have Jaicos, Perryman, Crisp going through the midfield. I can see Angry getting a couple of games next year, the other 2 will take time. They are youthful, but are they any good! There are some big shoes to fill over the coming years.
I would say he's preferred only because we took 3 mids in the draft. After we selected Angry, it doesn't look good for McGuane, but if he doesn't get selected this year, he can go back and get to work and try next year, some players go through a couple of drafts before being selected. Why is Saxena preferred over McGuane?
Because we have taken 3 mids already, and if it's not Saxena we take then maybe we look at a developing key back. So either way, l don't see McGuane getting picked up, unfortunately....Why is Saxena preferred over McGuane?
Going by Fly's reaction, they were hoping Brisbane wouldn't match.Theory
Maybe the Pies weren’t expecting the Lions to pass on Prindable. That was a pleasant surprise to them when that happened.
Otherwise they might have only taken three picks and kept two open for today’s rookie draft.
Unlucky for McGuane it seems
Agree, not sure they are a list need.I am not entirely sure we will select one of saxenna or Tommy tomorrow.
We are still light in the KPD department.
I have a feeling we will invite few KPD to train with us for a SSP spot.
So pleased the draft delivered Prindable.Going by Fly's reaction, they were hoping Brisbane wouldn't match.
Brisbane have mids coming out of their back passage anyway.
There is also the left field other one.Hoping they choose Mcguane over Saxena
Mcguane has more scope to play different roles
A bit slow but so was Josh Daicos to begin with… and like Josh… young Mcguane has inherited good foot skills
But I suspect with the type of players they’ve drafted so far…
they’ll possibly pick Saxena of the two as a point of difference
It's a strange situation. Like last year with Cochrane it'd have to be mixed feelings. Yes we got the one we wanted, but hang on, why don't they want him?Going by Fly's reaction, they were hoping Brisbane wouldn't match.

In Brisbane's case, they already have Ashcroft x 2, Marshall, now Annable, as well as their older guys - Neale, McCluggage, Dunkley, Bailey, etc. It's a strange situation. Like last year with Cochrane it'd have to be mixed feelings. Yes we got the one we wanted, but hang on, why don't they want him?
With you there TradeDraft - he was the one I was hoping for with our first - maybe we'll have another ping at getting him in two years time - hopefully he'll get to us and get a chance to play beside Bruz for a few years before Bruz hands over his mantle to Avery - I'll be watching Avery from afar, hoping he develops nicely but gets stuck behind the guzillion academy players the Suns have got - Avery seems a very likeable characterBloody Suns taking our Pick
Craft of the Draft had him at P46Didn't even have Allen on my list. So the two draft watchers who did top 50s didn't have him in. Unless I'm missing something.
