I really hope the club isn't banking on this. It's not like Fiedler dominated her 6 games and she's coming back from an ACL. I would hope the club has a better plan-B than Rene Caris....Fiedler is likely expected to be the #1 ruck when she's back from her ACL...
We could have kept Simpson, but there is a lot of competition for midfield spots and Simpson lacks the versatility that some of our others have. Also Simpson I thought showed enough to retain?
Yes agreed, but it was the only way I could make sense of them delisting Ott...leaving us with Caris and Fiedler. Are they going to find another ruck now? I mean they probably should but they'll probably do something like throw Besanko in there as first ruck...I really hope the club isn't banking on this. Whiley being gone already is a massive disappointment. I think the other two are tracking pretty well, though. Anderson, Baskaran and Clarke are all December birthdays, so don't turn 21 until next month.Whiley/Anderson/Friend has been fairly underwhelming.
It was really tough to get a read on that first round. Two of the Victorian AFLW Academy players didn't get drafted at all (Appleby, Dojiok). Two more (Gillard, Slender) slid out of the first round. Given that Slender didn't even make it through her first contract at North, there was clearly something going on there (maybe similar to Whiley here). There's probably a few teams regretting passing on Gillard.Friend I'm still not fully sold on - she has definitely had her best games this year but overall I'm still not sure on her engine even as a key defender. Although looking at her draft class, apart from Rowbottom, Prespakis and Charlie Thomas who went top 3 (this was a state based draft keep in mind), the top Vic picks haven't really kicked on too much (#4 Reid @ Richmond, #7 Friswell @ Cats, #9 Featherston @ Cats, #10 Annie Lee @ Blues). Best seems to be Sherar at Carlton (pick 11), Tess Craven in hindsight a steal at #13.
2023 was still state based, but they introduced a national option for players. Window opted to stay in SA, which allowed Port to get her at 19. Consensus seemed to be, if it had been an uncompromised national draft, the SA girls (Young, Goody and Window) would have likely been the top-3. Lucky Port.Whiley is a loss just from the perspective that we used pick #10 on her, there was plenty of talent picked after her like Wotherspoon, Kavanagh, Piper Window (not sure if she was already tied to Port somehow though) etc., who I'd have loved at the Saints.
That’s right we got no assistance when we came into the comp and Hawthorn who came in the next year, got all sorts of help. Collingwood we’re given access to good players at the outset but couldn’t manage their program properly and like their basketball they struggled.just seeing the hand outs the giants have just received, did we ever get anything from the afl when we entered the comp? Like I swear we were just left to our own devices to figure it out whilst other clubs were given picks or access to talent. Really hope we try target the draft in the coming years. The crops of girls coming through should be better than the current crop because they’ve been in a complete junior to senior pathway. We need some more elite players and best way to do that for us is in the draft
We got a couple of extra picks in 2021 or 2023 cant remember which. No nothing like the Hawks etc got but we are our own worst enemy when it comes to drafting. The only deal weve got 1000% right in our history is the year we traded in Wardlaw, Watson and Lambert. Without them we'd be still propping up the ladder make no mistakeThat’s right we got no assistance when we came into the comp and Hawthorn who came in the next year, got all sorts of help. We got stuff. The problem is it was worse than what other teams got.just seeing the hand outs the giants have just received, did we ever get anything from the afl when we entered the comp?
Wow just incredibly shafted. Just would love to get access to a star kid. But seems like it’s never gonna be handed to usWe got stuff. The problem is it was worse than what other teams got.
2019: Priority access to players within our zone. Thing is, we had to sign them before they had played in their last championships. The last round of expansion teams were allowed to wait until after the champs and were even allowed to defer their signings for a year which all of them did, because their zones had much better players the following year, compromising the 2023 draft.
We got picks 5, 9 and 15 in the draft. Our first pick was put after Collingwood's first, which is notable since we were put after the expansion teams in 2022. 15 was traded for McCarthy, 9 in a pick swap to the Dogs. Richmond, who had signed both Brennan and Conti, were given picks 1 (which they traded for Conti), 7 and 16.
2020: Richmond, who got the consensus best player in the draft with McKenzie at pick one, were given pick 15 to trade for Sarah Hosking. We had won 2 games in our first year, so we were given nothing.
2021: Geelong were given two extra first round picks. This, despite them landing Prespakis and us missing out on Rowbottom (which I'm sure was just bad luck with no league interference at all). We were given an additional second round pick (as were Richmond), which we packaged with our own second to get the Richards pick.
2022: This is the one that really bothers me. We were the worst team in Victoria. The only team in the league that finished lower than us was WC. We went 2-8 and had a percentage of 53.8. WC were 1-9 and had a percentage of 42.9. West Coast, who were always going to get Roberts (arguably the best junior ever) because of state-based drafting, got given an additional first round pick so they could take Lauren Wakfer as well. We had six Victorian picks added before our pick in addition to Ham and Hurley being taken out of the pool (choosing to nominate NSW to play for Sydney).
We were given a 'first round pick' as assistance, but it was pick 28. We traded it for Nic Stevens. That's after our first pick got knocked from pick 2 to pick 16.
So, TL;DR:
2019: Pre-signings (McDonald, Shannon); picks 5, 9, 15, 27, 33, 41, 54, 63, 72 etc
2020:
2021: Pick 22
2022: Pick 28
That's it.
In fairness, Patrikios and Smith were very much star kids. Both had better stats than the 1st overall pick in their respective drafts. There was also a massive drop-off in both drafts after our first picks. We would have been somewhat fortunate to get the two of them followed by Rowbottom and [take your pick of any top 2022 prospect]. It's still devastating and infuriating to miss out on that much talent, especially with the league giving handouts to teams that weren't missing out.Wow just incredibly shafted. Just would love to get access to a star kid. But seems like it’s never gonna be handed to us
We did well to make finals given how much has been against our ability to make a decent list.We got stuff. The problem is it was worse than what other teams got.

I definitely feel like we're headed in the right direction, even if the end to the season was disappointing. We did well to make finals given how much has been against our ability to make a decent list.
