List Mgmt. The Post Nankervis Era - Richmond Ruck Situation

Don’t think we need to worry about the ruck you can always make do with an average one and let’s face it it’s years before the side will be any where near good enough to warrant spending heaps on a decent ruck
Yep but that’s the whole point, I don’t reckon we have an average one after Nank.

Going to have to get one next offseason

Samson has zero chance of making it as his only positive is he's tall. OHB is a long shot to even get a token senior games let alone become our Nank replacement. Simms is more kpf than ruck. Dodson is stuck 3rd banana at Stkilda and his manager would have sh1t for brains to be advising him to extend. Tiges should swoop offering a future 4th rounder or later pick swap for him or walk him to the psd. Nanks been a phenomenal servant but his crash and bash style and rule changes will make him obsolete in 2 years.

Honestly who cares. Rucks are not a list need, you pick a few B graders off others lists and use the list spots.

Legitimately only Cox and Gawn are A grade ruckman and premiership winners. Every other flag team has a serviceable clubman type.

What's interesting is to see that while many premiership ruckmen aren't taken with early picks, there's a lot of them that were drafted by the club they played the premiership with.

24/25 Brisbane - Oscar McInerney was picked up in the rookie draft by Brisbane, he would have been 1st choice ruck in 2024 as well, but missed due to injury and Darcy Fort took his place (originally drafted by Geelong with Pick 65)

23 Collingwood - Cox drafted to Collingwood as an international rookie

22 Geelong - Stanley traded from Geelong who drafted him

21 Melbourne - Gawn drafted to Melbourne with a 2nd round pick

20/19/17 - Nank traded from Sydney as we know

18 - Grundy drafted by Collingwood with a last 1st round pick

16 - Roughead drafted by the Bulldogs with a 2nd round pick

Which means of the last 10 premierships, it's been a 50:50 split of playing in a flag with the team that drafted you, vs getting traded in. It would have been 60:40 without McInerney's injury, but I guess 50:50 is still fair given they won without him. Nank winning 3 with us also throws out the ratio a fair bit.

I think that at least shows that we should have some young developing rucks on our list, not just relying on trades to get us what we need. It's just good to have that option as a backup plan.

Drafting rucks early looks not great. But late first 2nd round draftees look solid.

But it really does show that you can pick up a decent ruck via a trade. And that is all you need.

Ryan is capable in most areas you need a ruckman to be but the one thing he's ordinary at is holding his ground at stoppages.
Gets pushed out way too easily in this department.
Its been his issue from the day he walked into the club & doesn't look to have gotten any better.
I held out some hope for Ryan and have been a supporter until I watched him get obliterated by 37yo Goldstein this year. He just could not hold his ground at stoppages, and he’s constantly unable to get his arms up to contest the tap. Maybe the new ruck rules will give him one last shot at making it … I hope so as we need him, but my hopes are pretty slim.

Dodson looks like being a very capable ruck. Saints will trade out Marshall end of 2026 before losing Dodson. I’d love to get him but don’t think it’ll happen - unless he’s really disgruntled at the Aints.

where's the vomit emoji?

Cox? A grader. he was a 2nd ruck. ..tall so positioned himself well up fwd.

Cameron better than him.

as was O, mac in his career.

Fort too

Dean Cox was an A grade ruck, Mason Cox was an A grade icehole.

Sure it's possible, but half of the time that's not how it was done.
So, I quite like the option of pursuing both paths to give us the best chance, we will back ourselves into a corner if we put all our eggs in one basket.

I would rather grab Keeler from them to be honest
suits the new ruck rules and would work well with Sims

I sort of hope we take Special K as our train on player. He's the right size, has explosive speed and can develop. Unless a ruck is a super player why do it. Someone who can compete and nullify is all you rally need. Try out low cost players and if nothing comes through do a trade.

I think he is about 30% chance to get the rookie spot
Very very Raw apparently and would need to have a 2nd position that he would be suited to to get the pick
Would be good if he shows signs as a defender as well

I would like to think that the fact they got him in as an SSP candidate means the powers that be recognise that we do probably need another developing ruck on the list. That recognition alone probably gives him the slight edge in the competition as players like Burton you can probably find in every draft.
If Burton smashes it out of the park then I'm sure he can still win the spot, but I would think as long as they see potential in Big K then he'll get the nod.

As Toby Nankervis enters his age 32 season, it may be important to start a discussion on preparing for life after our captain. Ideally, in the next offseason we are able to target another talented ruck, whether that be through the draft (midseason, national or rookie), trade, or from within.

If Toby Nankveris goes down during the year we're in a lot of trouble. Any team would be losing their captain, but our ruck stocks are thin. Sims has shown flashes but again I don't necessarily see him ever being a full time ruck at his height. OHB had one big game in the VFL against a 194cm key forward who had to full time ruck, tricking the casual Richmond fan into believing he may be the future.
Some may still believe in Samson, the club still does, I don't.

In terms of draft options, I'm sure there'll be some state league players who's early season form next year may push them into midseason draft discussions. I feel like this thread may be a good place to follow some of them as they emerge.

12 months out from the national draft there are a few ruck prospects, potentially at the pointy end of the draft. Van Huttum is the obvious one, I don't know much about him yet but he's 202cm, athletic, and mentioned by draft watchers as the most likely at this stage. Houndsome is maybe more key forward, at 199cm, he was dominant in the HS Shield. van Rooyen and Herbert are other names I know nothing about, but tigs2010 has mentioned.

A common argument against to the idea of drafting CDT was that talented rucks are readily available, often for cheap. I wanted to have a look at some of the options this far out, but I assume if we're putting work into any of them, it will have started.

Alex Dodson is the obvious one, but I still think Adelaide is probably primed to grab him, followed by Port.
Nicholas Madden is another but you’d assume he gets a fair run at it this year for GWS. Academy player too.
Taylor Goad is highly rated by North fans, and with the 5 on the bench I could see North playing him with Xerri. But if not, he is a nice option.
Ned Reeves, tallest player in the comp, I wouldn’t be as keen on this pickup but could be a nice stopgap. Will win hit outs
Max Ramsden
Henry Smith

It'll be interesting to see this discussion develop as we begin to see how the new ruck rules have changed how we view rucks.
Lachie Smith at the dogs another one, not gonna get ahead of English, averaged 14 disposals and 34 hitouts in the VFL, out of contract after '26
