The gap between the pick we traded and the one we got may be smaller than it looks. The expectation is that at least 3 or 4 bids will be matched in the early stages of the draft - and could be as many as 8.

If some of those picks come from after 13 but before 24, we could end up with something like like pick 20 instead of pick 17. Of course, we could also get pushed back by some of the later bids getting matched. It may be better to look at where the picks are independent of the academy nonsense afterward to evaluate.

If we ended up moving back a small amount and picking up a future second, that seems pretty good. I am a little wary of small moves in the W, though, given we've seen some pretty dramatic dropoffs in talent at varying stages of the drafts. Moving up to get Richards ended up being a very good move given what ended up available at our original picks.

It doesn't seem like we're poised to have a particularly eventful trade period. It may just be nobody consequential is available. I will say that if we don't bring in any ruck help or particularly a key forward, I won't be happy. I'm not going to microwave my membership or anything like that, but I'll be disappointed. I'm hoping we're just cooking up something spicy away from the noses of the journos.

Lots of players seem to be on the move so disappointing not to be linked with anyone yet.

But at least we are retaining ours.
We're into Sophie Buttersworth from Hawthorn as a proper key forward. Fills a need for sure, just have to wait and see if it works out.

Definitely the type of player we need, even I'd been hoping for more a finished product type who can slot straight in. Big, contested marking key forward with a strong left boot. Butterworth would also know Amber Clarke and Besanko from the Stingrays and would be the sixth former Dandy player on our list.

Hawthorn's demands will be interesting. Butterworth turns 20 in a few days and was pick 45 two years ago. Hasn't exactly set the world on fire statistically. Hard to imagine she's worth anything earlier than the third round - possibly a future pick?

Also, on a completely different note, a very clear brain fart on my part in my post above. GC placing bids won't move our picks up. I'm not sure why I thought they would, but I'm blaming all the evaporating picks in the men's draft. Still, GC have picked up five picks in between our original first pick and our current one, which means 13 is probably ending up at least 18. Pick 24 probably ends up moving back as well.

As bad as the academy system is in the men's, I've got to give the AFL credit: they've somehow managed to come up with an even worse system for the women's comp. I should never have doubted them.

Yeah I cant imagine she is worth much in trade. Playing 6 mediocre games in 2 years doesnt strike me as worth much. Purely getting her based on positional need and potential.

Damn was hoping it fell over as she's been a very integral piece in our defensive line. But hard to judge since alot of personal circumstances influence these W trade requests, good luck to her

I was also hoping this one wouldn't go through. Unless we find a replacement somewhere, it means we're either playing Jakobsson next year or we're playing a smaller backline. Very little defensive depth either way. After Trudgeon, Friend, Watson, Burke, Forbes and Jakobsson I'm not seeing any defensive depth, actually. I wonder if somebody is getting moved.

Very little defensive depth either way.
Yep definitely a worry - was hoping she'd not go but no doubt got a better offer from the Cats and with only a couple of seasons left and as a new parent she probably wants to do what's best by the family as well. She's only ever missed 1 game in her career (for the birth of her son) - the 16 game gap between her and Ally Anderson is purely down to the number of finals games the Lions have played. Although I still have a little bit of a chip on my shoulder about her for missing that absolute sitter against Collingwood a few years ago running into an open goal no one in sight...we lost the game by a point or so I think!

Anyway all the best Nic...

For the next few years most youngsters will be better than older players who haven't been able to play footy all the way through their career. So I'm not too fussed if we go to the draft. And there are still quality players deep in the draft.

Stevens out; Butterworth in. Here's my best crack at a R1 team:

B: Paige Trudgeon, Ella Friend
HB: Alice Burke, Serene Watson, Kyla Forbes
C: Nic Barr, Georgia Patrikios, Molly McDonald
HF: Hannah Priest, J'Noemi Anderson, Ash Richards
F: Jesse Wardlaw, Sophie Butterworth
FOLL: Emmelie Fiedler, Tyanna Smith, Jaimee Lambert

INTER: Charlotte Baskaran, Amber Clarke, Alana Gee, Bianca Jakobsson, Liv Vesely

EMERG: Zoe Besanko, Rene Caris, Darcy Guttridge

Really interested to see Butterworth, because there were experienced key forwards available out there for not a heck of a lot. There's still the possibility of a mature-ager through the draft.

The Saints acquired Butterworth’s services, as well as the Hawks Pick 87, in exchange for Pick 67 and St Kilda’s future fourth round selection.

Paid nothing for her so it's basically a free hit.

Couple more just now - Ari Clarke and Lilu Hung are also not on the list for next year. They were both late additions so they were just on one year contracts that aren't being renewed I think.

That means we're in a spot where we'll actually use the two 5th round picks (ours and the one we got off Hawthorn in the Butterworth trade). I imagine they'll end up quite a bit earlier than 85 and 87.

I really would have much preferred to used the two list spots we used on Clarke and Hung on some experienced talls. I find the complete lack of urgency of our list management to add rucks and key forwards to our list quite perplexing.

We have Fiedler returning from injury as a ruck which is pretty much a new recruit

Just signed Butterworth as a key fwd

Agree we might need one more but we’ll hopefully look at SSP for that

Fine on Fiedler for next year although considering she came from nowhere (from memory she was a late addition to the squad after not playing a game for Freo - no shame in that being behind the awesome Mim Strom) but yes seems we just neglected to give any decent support to Jesse this season when we had opportunities to top up the squad.

Great haul for the Saints

I haven't paid too much attention to the AFLW crop this year but I've done a bit of reading

Carys D'Addario was apparently in contention for the first round and ended up sliding all the way out to pick 61. Obviously this means there is a clear deficiency in her game that clubs were turned off by but can't doubt the fact that she is ready-made for the AFLW as a midfielder who wins clearances and uses the ball well. Seems like a replacement for Charlotte Simpson

Jade McLay is similar to D'Addario in the sense that she is also a ready-made inside mid. But at 177cm, she's previously also played as a ruck, key forward, key back, and midfielder :tearsofjoy: I watched some of her highlights and she looks like the W version of Oliver Greeves from the mens draft with her height and tendency to don't argue

Chelsea Sutton is a mid/fwd who thrives off her defensive pressure but also wins contest and gets forward offensively with her speed. Runs all day with a huge tank. Seems like a replacement for Hannah Stuart

Maya Louvel-Finn is a direct Nic Stevens replacement IMO. Intercept queen with good ball use and tough as nails. Can lock down on an opponent too. Good size at 170cm so will provide aerial presence

Abby Hobson is apparently arguably the best contested-marking player in the pool. At 174cm she might be slightly undersized so without watching her too closely, it sounds like she might be a W version of Cooper Sharman. Very good kick, big tank, strong, high footy IQ. Has the same knocks that Sharman had early in his career with groundballs and agility. Replaces Ott on the list

This is the first draft under new list manager Darius Wyatt and it's clear there is a very clear philosophy: pick players who are physically mature and are ready for AFLW. Each of these players could easily play round 1. Clear emphasis on picking for midfield which is interesting because I thought midfield was the area we were most flush with options this season with so many who could run through

Looking forward to 2026 - this is a very good haul IMO
