Welcome to Collingwood - Dyson Heppell as a new development coach

Will he have a matchday role? If he has then you’d assume that’d take precedence, if not, doubt it’ll matter too much.
Pickering said on sen it’s a part time non match day role.

Never really rated this guy as a leader. Maybe it was the cattle and culture around him?

Always thought he just stood out as the best amongst a mediocre list. Perhaps that speaks to his character and perhaps that’s what we need.

But I would have thought we could do better. Tom Mitchell anyone?

Outsiders like us have no right to judge his coaching potential based off his playing career at Essendon.

I’ll back the clubs decision. Pretty minor role but plenty of upside for him. Would rather he didn’t play VFL at a different club though.

Timothy, we judge players on this forum with insufficient knowledge all the time.

Without it, you may as well shut down BF

Why would Mitchell be better?
He’s played at 3 different clubs, sustained training at an incredible high performance level, played finals, won a Brownlow and a flag, knows our culture. Just little things.

There’s some knowledge with players though. There’s footage to watch for example.

Judging coaches though before they have even started their career is nonsensical.

Ok
I’ll rephrase it.
Heppel was a high draft pick that achieved more than the other players at a shit morally bankrupt club.
Had some playing skills, but ultimately insufficient leadership skills to drag that team out of its malaise through a wet paper bag.

That’s pretty factual.
Why would you choose him?
Because he’s a nice guy?
I doubt any of us actually know him. That’s speculation.

If there were no better options, he must have been very affordable.

It’s a part time role - so maybe Titch wasn’t interested.

Personally I'm always in favor of bringing in people who have come from a different team/teams, there's more than enough nepotism going at the club as it is

Mitchell’s spent enough time at other clubs to bring that external view.

He definitely seems like a great guy. Whether he can coach or not… the club will have far more idea than us mug punters.

I think he can because the club does and I trust them

I like the appointment, he was a very smart footballer particularly in congestion and positioning.

Very much dislike him working at a 2nd football club at the same time however. That is a conflict of interest

I was told about this weeks ago but it’s an interesting one
Given he plays for port Mellb- he’s gonna play against the players he’ll coach 😂

And he’ll get intel he could tell port about our program
Surely he doesn't end up playing with Port anymore and plays for the Pies instead... I would have thought part of his job would be to watch the young players - they will be playing in times that he would also be playing if he stayed at Port

Not sure if this constitutes his appointment but Dyson is an utter professional and a very humble bloke, his now wife Katey is also solid af.

Port Melbourne employed Heppell to run their clinics - seperately to playing. So Heppell has more relevant experience than Tom.
Do you really think being employed by a stand alone VFL club offers more exposure than playing for Sydney, Hawthorn and Collingwood in three very good systems with exceptional senior coaches steering them?
I doubt it.

Doing a similar role at a lower level is greater exposure than not doing a similar role at any level. Development coaching is teaching - it's a different skill to playing.

Sav, it has merit, but I doubt it’s better than being part of 3 pretty good afl systems.
And Mitchell is pretty articulate and invested in training systems.

Besides. He’s just one example. I’m sure there would be others in the conversation.

It's just a very different skill to playing footy - from their playing careers, would any of us have picked Fly, Brad Scott, Fagan, Longmire, Hardwick, Clarko to be the ones to go on to become the most successful coaches of recent times. Did Fagan even play AFL? It's a **** knows from the outside.

Brad hey..... Are you a time traveller? Are Essendon about to 3 peet?
