Fina Dethlefsen becomes a Tiger

Richmond has selected Fina Dethlefsen with pick 38 in the AFLW Draft.

Richmond has selected 22-year-old Perth midfielder/forward Fina Dethlefsen with its second pick, No. 38 overall at tonight’s Telstra AFLW National Draft.

Originally from Geraldton, where she played for Railways Football Club, Dethlefsen has played in the WAFLW for the past three years.

Dethlefsen averaged 13 disposals and six tackles per game this season for Perth and was a member of the Western Australia team that played South Australia in a state match.

Richmond AFLW List and Recruiting Manager, Trent Mosbey, said Dethlefsen’s strengths were her athleticism, power, speed, endurance, and leap.

“Fina’s style is highly competitive, and she plays with aggression, physicality, and regularly wins contested ball,” he added.

“Her ability to drive her legs and fend off to get away from tacklers and to get out of congestion is a real feature of her game.

“Fina can penetrate the game with her athleticism, but also her long, booming kick.

“She is elite overhead and a challenging player to defend with her power and spring.”

Mosbey added that the West Australian was an elite competitor.

“We loved her combination of attacking and defensive game style,” he said.

“Fina displayed a fierce attack and high level of intensity at the ball and opposition, which sets her apart in this draft pool. She is an elite tackler and pressure player, as displayed by her six tackles per game in the WAFLW.

“She has displayed Richmond character traits on and off the field and is highly regarded for her positive energy, leadership, diligence, professionalism, and strong desire to achieve.”

Dethlefsen spent two seasons at Subiaco before making the move to Perth, meaning she will be reunited with former teammate Olivia Wolmarans at Tigerland, who was selected earlier in the night with the number one pick.

The Geraldton product currently works as a lifeguard and has previously competed in Surf Life Saving and triathlons.

Thanks for the highlights. Look forward to hearing Fina’s story.

Looking at the vision and even though it’s at the lower level I’m a bit surprised that at 22, Fina isn’t already in the system. Has all the attributes and the extra vision also shows us Fina doesn’t mind nailing someone in a tackle.

Must say we’ve done pretty well this trade/draft period.

Nail the coach selection and we are well on our way.

Pleasantly surprised. I know it was a lower standard she was playing in, she is older than the normal draftees, but,
1. She gave off vibes of playing in a Sheerin type way. Strong, straight ahead, long disposal. None can call Sheerin highly skilled or dual sided but she is effective and as the grand final showed influential. A type we don't have. Not saying she is as good but similar attributes.
2. From the highlights she showed she is good and clean in overhead marking, again something we lack massively.
3. when she gained possession she took off immediately. No dithering, no short handball but taking off towards goal
4 From a triathalon background, will have fitness and strength.
5 From having to wait for opportunity eg Broad and Sheerin may have that inner strength to succeed.

compare the above with say Mills, one of our last delisted and I would say probabilities we have made the right decision., especially as Mills was not picked up by another club

It's a very left field pick, a lot to like about the way Fina attacks the ball and flys for marks, I like that she's also from WA having drafted Olivia and also played at Subiaco lions. Was unlucky to miss WAFL's team of the year status. I think the vision is contrary to someone being ranked around 50 by their state league. Had to be a knock on some part of her package. Good luck to her and optimistic until proven otherwise with the move to national league not as big a hill to climb as thought for some, could surprise.

Sheerin was a train on for GWS so had a decision to make to come to Melbourne to play for us or sign with them, ironically it was a CD in the player of a car she bought that week with our theme song that she saw as a sign and signed with Tigers. Every team needs a Sheehan or that type, so I hope you're right.

Shes a lot slimmer than the first photo. I thought ohh yeah, another chubby like the es we got last season. With these late picks, who knows? Maybe we pulled off master strokes, because we sure as hell need some help.

And then she saw a kangaroo bouncing up and down Punt Road, and the rest is History.

Pretty shit comment. Maybe some thoughts running through your head are best left there.

Fina is actually taller than her initial vision showed. She looks a taller, stronger, faster, better skilled version of Greg.

Looking forward to replacing the word "looks" with "is" in about 8 months time.

Agree, good size Baia and Fina, especially when compared to Wolmarans in that pic. Hard not to be excited by a No. 1 pick, but the potential in Fina, based on some highlights, is possibly even more exciting when you see she already has a skill set that's the equal of, or better than, some of our current players on the team list.

What the hell are you on about?

"Fina is actually taller than her initial vision showed"

If you can't tell the difference between my post and yours then that probably explains a lot.

Aren't they the same thing? It's ok, I forgive you. These are hard times.
