"After Port Adelaide announced they would be joining the AFL in 1996, there was only one choice to replace the Magpies in the SANFL for season 1997- Mount Gambier. The club decided on the nickname 'Volcanoes', representing the landmark the town was named after. The Volcanoes' bespoke inaugural jumper design, featuring the team's primary colour of orange, was chosen to represent the flow of molten lava typically seen in eruptions."
