Midfielder Dana East will play for Richmond next year after the Club completed a trade with Fremantle in the final moments of the trade period.

East arrives at Richmond along with selection No. 63 and Fremantle’s future third-round selection.

In exchange, Richmond has traded the Dockers' selection No. 40, Gold Coast’s future third-round selection and North Melbourne’s future fourth.

The 23-year-old has played 49 AFLW games for the Dockers, including eight this year, where she averaged 14 disposals, five tackles and two clearances.

East was a former West Australian junior basketball captain before switching to football in her draft year and parachuting up draft boards to be selected at 31 overall (fourth in WA).

The tough midfielder has continually impressed for the Dockers across her five seasons at AFLW level with consistently strong tackling and clearance numbers.

Richmond AFLW List and Recruiting Manager, Trent Mosbey, said that East would add speed and agility to the Club’s stocks, as well as excellent character.

“We are delighted to bring Dana to Richmond. She plays the right way and adds a hard edge to our midfield,” he said.
“She has clean hands and an ability to bring others into the game, particularly around stoppage.

“She has a great deal of AFLW experience, and also a lot of upside to continually improve her game at the Swinburne Centre.”

Richmond holds selections 1, 38, 56 and 63 at the AFLW National Draft set to be held next Monday. The Club is also armed with an additional third-round pick next season.

Fremantle have finalised a deal with Richmond that will see Dana East head to Victoria, following the midfielder’s request to seek a trade in pursuit of greater opportunity.

Richmond have given Pick 40, a Future Third Round pick (tied to Gold Coast) and a Future Fourth Round pick (tied to North Melbourne) to Fremantle in exchange for Dana East, Pick 63 in the upcoming 2025 AFLW Draft and a Future Third Round pick.

East was signed by Fremantle ahead of the 2022 season, with pick 31 in the 2021 AFLW Draft and has gone on to play 49 games across five seasons.

A competitive inside-mid, East was a valuable part of the Club’s midfield, known for being clean in the contest, bringing a ferocious attack on the ball and hunting her opposition.

The 23-year-old’s season-best effort for 2025 was in Round 1 against Port Adelaide, where she laid 10 tackles, amassed 14 disposals and five intercept possessions.

AFLW List Manager Darryn Fry thanked East for everything she gave to the Freo family in five seasons and wished her well for her future at Richmond.

“We want to thank Easty for her contribution to the Club over the past five seasons,” Fry said.

“She has been an integral part of our Club since she walked through the doors, both on and off the field and has always brought genuine effort, competitiveness and care for her teammates. Easty is the teammate you love to have on your side.

“Easty’s desire to continually develop her game, test herself against the best and growth mindset have been hallmarks of her time in purple.

“Easty will always be part of the Freo family, and we wish her well on her new adventure over at the Tigers.”

Has a decent handball on her too…..which will be a welcome addition to the soft tap-throw of others…..if she is an Egan replacement, she has more speed, better kick and hand passer and tackler.

Hard to assess as we see limited vision. You largely have to go on stats unless you are a nut case and start watching all of Freo's games to see how she has gone. DE % is mid 50's which is actually lower than Egan's. However, Egan was like a deer in headlights in traffic and just dropped the ball continually. Much better in open space. Hopefully East is better in congestion and I'm sure the extra speed helps.

DE % in women's footy is pretty low for mids. Average anything over 60% and you've done as well as any of the bulk of the better mids going around.

Yep agree - tis limited vision nd I can’t recall seeing her when we played them (tv) so grain of salt stuff.
although, in comparison with the limited vision of the two in the mix for our first pick, they both had handballs with no power behind. I get it can also reflect the recipient being too close, but w Dana a few of hers were several metres to an outside player.

Agree with DE% comment and you see the players who have got speed usually create more exits from stoppage, start more chains and bring tackle pressure. Dana has 33% more tackles than Grace from 20% less game time so defensively those stats are evident she is better defensively, Grace had strength and ball winning ability I'm not sure that Dana could match, but if she can bring that pressure and add to our movement with ball in hand, I'm confident that what is effectively a player swap will be a step up for us.

She's a better giver of the ball than Egan, with the ball finishing higher to a team mate, less bending to collect, translating to ball security and a bit more time to dispose.
