Unofficial Preview SOO. real or exhibition.

I think the only way this grows legs and gets fans involved is if WA win, then in 2027/28 go into Vic as the SOO champs to play them again there. The Vic public will get into it then. There'll be some needle to it.

Personally, I can't wait for the game. I've been living in the UK for 7 years, and move back to Perth in Jan

If the best 23 players from both states went all guns blazing in it - Vic would win by at least 60 points. There is a massive difference between the sides.
VIC are stacked.

WA v SA would be reasonably competitive

Not sure about that. The Vic seconds team would beat the WA seconds by an enormous margin, but if every single WA player is available, they would compete pretty well against Victoria's best. The WA forward and back lines would be very strong. Midfield the main issue, but if Warner, Cripps, Jackson, Pickett, Bolton delivered on the day, then who knows.

As for what will be a glorified training session, I'd give the WA team a decent chance because they can stack it with genuine speed such as Hill, Hill, Pickett, Bolton, Cameron, Clark, etc. In a bruise free contest, these guys could do some damage running around with a free rein.

Just saw Lobbe named for WA.

Definitely confirms exhibition match only.
Haha, he is the only token player so far, clearly insurance. Freo Crowd support could be interesting but must admit if he has a State jumper I would hold back.

I wonder how they'll manage the training for the squads without it being too disruptive on the commitments the players have to their AFL teams pre-season.

For the Vic squad, I would assume there's got to be some sessions in Victoria where the squad gets together before they fly over and train a couple of times at Optus. Does someone like Caleb just stay in WA until those last couple of training sessions? And the other way for the WA players not based in WA that have to meet somewhere as a squad to train together.

Zero Hanger had a crack at the team - apparently from the players named so far. I would think there would be more interchange players than just 3.

Is there anyone obviously missing? I thought Tim English might be a ruck rotation.

WA selectors in the early days of State of Origin football usually picked a young up and coming player who wasn't necessarily an experienced WAFL player - I'm thinking of players like Ken Hunter who lined up in 1977 and Jon Dorotich in 1984 who had played only about 30-40 WAFL games when they got picked. Perhaps a couple of the younger players who have had promising seasons like Dan Curtin or Rueben Ginbey could be considered, at least on an extended bench.

We're going to get spifflicated
We need to return to what worked for us previously, we have to be too quick for them to win the game. It’s possible especially in an exhibition game (it’s not going to be like NSW v Queensland rugby SOR).

Of the latter part of your post, of that you can be assured.Totally an exhibition game.
Afraid I can not get excited about it.

I feel arguments could be made for the following:
  • Darcy Jones - Particularly if our strategy is to try and run them off their feet, I think having him in the side and an option for high half forward can allow Bolton to play further up the ground / on the wings where Vics have a higher level of class than Rivers/Humphries. Also can play well defensively, has speed to boot and will also bring chemistry with Hogan.
  • Heath Chapman - underrated but reliable defender with attacking skills should he end up with the ball and has the advantage of being able to play tall and small (the backups are all under 190cm), I think he should definitely be in the conversation for the seventh defender. Also allows Baker to play his normal game as a utility and will have chemistry with Clark.
I also agree that Curtin and Ginbey should be considered.

This won't be popular, but I feel like we should make a tactical decision and go with two talls rather than three and go with someone tall who can play other roles (arguably Jackson or Dan Curtin) - this seems to be how the Vics are playing it with Cameron and Darcy (Dangerfield playing as a third tall). Probably even more so if we are trying to play fast and furious.

On paper their midfield should cream ours: although the centre lineups are maybe close, they will be able to play players like Anderson, Butters, Richards, Merrett and Daicos (they still have Bont, Rowell, Serong to play on the inside) on the outside and that looks scary against the likes of Rivers, Humphries, Baker and Powell.

Darcy Jones unfortunately had that long term injury diagnosis from the GWS final against Hawthorn.

Didn’t a school boy Glen Jakovich play for WA when it was in the AFL era? He must have lined up on Gary Ablett?

I quite like that concept and it’s a shame they haven’t kept it going, I think the US basketball team take a college kid to the Olympics.

The WA rucks, backs and forwards can hold their own.

On paper the Victorian midfield will dominate, but this should be an exhibition bruise-free contest with no close checking and in that scenario Clark, Brad Hill, Cameron, Bolton, Pickett could run rampant between the arcs.

Bobby Hill isn't in the Zero Hanger side above. I'd be adding him to the bench. I'd also consider [PLAYERCARD]Liam Ryan[/PLAYERCARD]. The best chance WA has is to stack it with as many speed demons as possible. Darcy Jones would have been perfect if not for his ACL.

Zurhaar hasn't been mentioned. I'd roll the dice on him.

The surest way for the rebirth of state of origin to last as long as [PLAYERCARD]Daniel Kerr[/PLAYERCARD] in a drug rehab facility is for it to be an exhibition match. If the AFL and players want origin as an ongoing concern they have to play it real.
I am not saying it's going to be grand final intensity but if it is played like an exhibition it won't survive as a concept

Yes, ticket sales will drop significantly in following years if they treat it like a preseason jog around.

It will be as clubs don't want injury

Totally agree with you.
There is no way that any of the coaches will allow their stars to go full steam.
I see both coaches taking special care of their own players.

I'd love a dinkem contest like the nrl. Unfortunately it won't happen.

Fingers crossed our premiership contention isn't hindered by the match.

Their rights, the NRL , have long taken over from Aussie rules. Yes Aussie rules, not AFL.
