Anybody who dares to treat the Big Bash as entertainment shall be taken outside and roughed up. This is a very serious thread about a very serious competition.

Btw there are only two things wrong with the Melbourne Mace. 1) The team logos should be on a swivel like the medallion on a Tony award. 2) The shaft should be made of wood and look like Harry Potter's broomstick:

Much better.

No derbies required.

No reason Melbourne vs Sydney couldn’t become a huge crowd event with higher quality players.

Other than derbies why do Melbourne and Sydney need 2 teams?

So the smaller states actually stood a chance, hence West Australians will be 100% against at any changes that makes it harder for them.

There's that insecure parochialism we all expect from eddiesmith. Given the BBL encourages player movement as well as internationals, not sure it would be an issue. Also, injuries forced the Scorchers to roll out an all local team last night and we still won, so again, not really concerned about reverting to State-based, I'd imagine.

Also, the Stars captain is a West Aussie, as is half the Renegades bowling line-up.

Eddie with the gold as usual. Folding 2 teams would mean only 5 other teams for WA to beat. Go for it I say, even though it wont happen.

Except it’s very simple maths even those out west should be able to understand…

The best 11 West Australians stayed with the Scorchers, the best 11 Victorians and NSW players got split…

Yes, the WA born captain who got smoked by the Victorian captain to lose the game.

I think the Stars would be a lot better with Sutherland and Short instead of Stoinis and Cartwright!!!

But it doesn’t have to go back to state, you can keep the franchise crap, but when the local lads have a choice between 1 home team or travel like those over in the Perth cult, then it’ll even it up a bit.

I thought it was a lacrosse stick

Nah they still suck, choking is their strong suit, but it’s about opportunity to see high standard cricket live and for me as a still actively involved in senior cricket, person in a regional area, the scheduling makes it hard to get to. I got to Day 2 of the Test 🙌 and with the next two games on Training nights - (Tuesday & Thursday) that was my only real option.

From your perspective, do you see kids at local cricket actively advise that they are Renegades, or Strikers, or Heats?

I think there'd be a few disappointed people if it went back to a 6 team comp and it wasn't state based. Personally think a 10 game state season with aus players and a few imports would be great. Much more appealing than the Indian takeover.

Why not both?

A bit contrived is the trophy. But the league has to do something to generate a "rivalry"

When this started up they drew a line down the middle of vic, defining the west as notional Renegades and the east as notional Stars, however as an MCC member I pushed my boys into the Stars. The club where I grew up and am involved with now has a player in the Renegades system so I would say 95% of people follow them and all the kids do, bar for one who has a connection to Tim Ludeman when he was at the Strikers. You get to choose a green or red shirt as part of the Blast uniform and from memory I don’t see too many green ones.

Reckon he's correct it's the best formula. A ten game season, everyone plays each team home and away, so much fairer, and the talent of the six teams would be higher than what is currently spread across eight. The league would probably be better if it started after the Sydney Test and all the Aussie players took part. I understand the reason why both of these things probably won't happen but reckon it's the best outcome from a playing quality perspective.
You can't start the tournament after the final Test, because of school holidays.
Kids and wives don't want to attend Test matches.
Getting the Tests out of the way,so the Test players can take part in the latter part of the season,is the way to go.
It's a win win.

I dunno about that nessecerily. Below is a fairly strong XI of WA players that played more games for teams other than the Scorchers.

S.Marsh
J.Phillippe
M.Hussey
H.Cartwright
D.Short
T.David
M.Stoinis
N.Coulter Nile
J.Paris
C.Gannon
M.Beer

The key thing appears to be that we consistently retained a good bowling lineup.

As I said, I understand why they wouldn't do it because they want to stick within the school holidays (mind you, it's the eastern states school holidays, the Scorchers opened the season five days before the school holidays began here). But if you compressed the season, you could run it from Jan 5 to Feb 5 or something similar and include all the Australian Test stars as well as perhaps some of the touring team's players as well, which is the only way the BBL gains more credibility.

I like your idea of finishing the Tests earlier, perhaps Boxing Day could be the last Test, the BBL could begin the same day, most Test players would only miss one or two matches each. But Sydney would cry foul over not getting the New Year Test.

February has shown it doesn't work. Australia Day weekend is the latest it can go. Whenever it goes later than that it has fallen away as school is back.

Also the TV network want it done by then so they can launch their new shows at the same time as every other channel.

Anyway the comps fine, crowds and TV audiences are up. There are some really big crowds. Not sure why everyone keeps coming up with suggestions. People live too much in an AFL bubble on here.

Its funny, strange and thought provoking why afl is so ingrained but cricket is not, when cricket is the national sport. Also, afl has a stronghold on the mCg. the melbourne Cricket ground.

Agree, if people are worried about the Big Bash with multiple crowds over 40,000 then I guess we need to rebrand some of the AFL clubs and rejig the season.

Once Cummins retires they should play the BBL final every year on Australia Day, make it an event, but CA can’t do that…

feel like I'm taking crazy pills reading pitches to start the BBL after the tests. something like the 20th would be the absolute latest to start it
Sure, but the last missing piece of the puzzle for the BBL is to have all Australian Test players competing in it. As it stands, we can't have Indian players, very few quality South Africans or NZ players because they have their own summer of cricket, plus no players from the touring Test nations across those three countries. Having Smith, Cummins, Starc, Green etc playing would increase its appeal here and in the Indian market.

The BBL franchises has been actively poaching NZ players and paying them to pull out of playing for NZ during the BBL. See Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson and Tim Seifert. Between the BBL, ILT20 and SA20 there's barely a NZ 1st XI player left playing in the Super Smash.

Once we get to the 6+ month IPL seasons it will happen with Australian players too.

Oh no the IPL boogie man.

Something we know for sure about Australian cricketers, they're all just itching for the opportunity to spend 6 months of every year in India...

The same prima donnas who can't play cricket on Christmas eve because it'd mean sacrificing precious hours with the family.
