The worst was when they got rid of the "Hill" and replaced it with an ugly cheap stand - terrible.
Now the SCG is full of add hoc stands with nothing in common.
There are obstacles to moving around the ground and no throughput.
I don't "hate" the SCG because it's the home of the Swans but
the SCG is a symbol of the disappointing way that NSW approaches sport.

With the Olympics, Sydney will be behind Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide w.r.t. stadia.

The field can be restored to a good oval, but the stadium would need extensive work.
The stadium needs an outer shell and the huge moveable section needs to pushed forward
with the lower section (about 2 metres) cut off and available to be used in rectangular configuration.

Probably as it continues in the line of poor stadium decisions. butthe sensible an economic decision would be to build a multi-purpose stadium along the the lines of Perth stadium catering for all major sports
and all sports would benefit.

Yeah such a poor decision to make a proper rectangular large stadium for the cities biggest sports of rugby league, rugby, soccer.. men’s/womens, etc etc sometimes in here people have too much of the afl blinkers on.

The problem with Homebush will always be the location. AFL is already in a premium location at Moore Park.

It would be an amazing outcome for afl in Sydney to have a 60k upgraded scg.

Yes, apart from the latest Parramatta Stadium, The NSW government continually squandered resources on inappropriate stadiums.
Then along came the Olympics The media widely lauded the design but I don't remember anybody
stating a use for the Olympic stadium after the event but obviously it incorporated a moveable centre section.
so somebody must have considered it uses.

Yes, initially the AFL drew large crowds to Homebush and it was envisaged that AFL would have a prominent presence there.

sometimes in here people have too much of the afl blinkers on.

I think it was ant-AFL brigade that was responsible spending on multiple stadiums
as well as the RU/rl rift that was big at the time with RU demanding that Concorde be upgraded.

The problem with Homebush will always be the location.

Homebush is in the geographical heart of Sydney
and only Sydney CBD is better served by public transport.

AFL is already in a premium location at Moore Park.

That might have been correct if they'd built a decent tram/train line past it.

It would be an amazing outcome for afl in Sydney to have a 60k upgraded scg.

That would require extensive rebuilding and cost but that would continue the NSW goverenment's theme
of throwing good money after bad.

Connects the ground to the past. Beautiful to look at and identifiable throughout the world. Perth stadium is modern and I'm sure has all the amenities but I couldn't pick it out of a line up of new stadiums.

The Barmy Army are somewhat tight yet this is a football forum. The SCG maybe a good cricket stadium, personally I’d have Adelaide as the best.

Optus and the MCG are both so big with such long boundaries that square of the wicket you feel like you’re a mile away. Brisbane well that’s about to be torn down.

I really don’t think another stadium like Optus or the MCG suits the sport of cricket or serves the needs of the game.

Upgrades are about money. I've been attending sporting events for a long time and for all the new stadiums the plastic seats I sat in at the beginning are pretty much the same as the new ones. Don't think your comfort is anybody's priority.

Significance of a site is connected to it's location. The members stand has provided a backdrop to Trumper and Bradman playing tests. Now it's Steve Smith. Move the structures which I imagine would be impossible without destroying it given the materials and it loses it's context and what makes it special.

Some people wanted to bulldoze the rocks while the Queen Victoria building was slated for demolition. History resonants with some more than others. Don't think many visitors at the scg this week looked at the most iconic and attractive part of the venue and thought that should go. Different strokes..

So obsolescent and dilapidated that they managed to record biggest crowd in 50 years the other day. I believe those stands identified should be replaced but the language the administrators of the richest sports are using is a joke.

A redevelopment of all those aging '80's stands are absolutely necessary for the SCG. The queues just to get a drink or food in those stands are ridiculous and the corporate facilities dowdy and hopelessly inadequate for today's standards. Their are more (and far superior in quality) corporate facilities in Australia's most picturesque oval, Adelaide, and of course there are far more such facilities still in Perth and the MCG - with a $2 billion new Shane Warne Stand in the offing and, of course, the brand new Brisbane Stadium coming on-line in the early 2030's.

For decades, right up to when the "new" Adelaide Oval was completed, the SCG was, by capacity, Australia's second largest cricket stadium - in fact, go back far enough in history, it was, by capacity, Australia's largest stadium outright for some 40 years from when the Hill was constructed in c1884.

Sydney's historic cricket ground, with its twolovely old 19th century relics sadly offset by those badly aging 1980's stands, risks being consigned to that of a secondary cricket stadium compared to all the other mainland capitals, if it doesn't make a serious effort to update it's inadequate facilities - both corporate and general public. It can still keep the two old stands, but as for the rest (excluding the new members stand), it's surely time for them to go.
