I have had a crack and my January best 23 for Round 1 vs Carlton.

this is getting bloody tough! In a good way!

Just saw this posted as I sat down again.

Agree the team is very hard to pick.

Minor issues. Definitely Mansell over Alger - to add grunt experience and leadership.

Sonsie and Ross on the wings. Both have more experience and both are more creative and do the grunt work now. They have higher upsides as wings than your guys. But then Trainor must play

Then what to do to round out the team. Definitely a 2nd ruck. Could go Miller and Balta. Or throw Sampson in.

I hadn't looked through and realised that we actually have depth now. Genuine AFL quality players will not make the team this year. That is a quick turn around in the squad. In particular the midfield has a heap of very young talent. They can play a bit here and bit there I guess.

I really liked how you explained Lalor's level. His base is just above a good AFL player. And he is a baby in AFL terms.

The only thing I strongly disagree with is Sam Grlj not in the team. The rest is debatable, But whether its wing or half back flank Preferably on the half back Grlj has to be in round 1.

Also Disagree with Short, Prestia, Gibcus in the team for balance sake

That forward line looks exciting tho

Grlj has too many ahead of him at half back IMO.

One of the toughest spots to try compete for.

Those older guys will be locks early days, but needs to shift by seasons end

New Tigers lead the way! | Match sim update and highlights

The young cubs were at it again leading the way in the most recent match sim on Friday!

Maybe Grlj isn’t ready yet, but I see him playing the Houli position off the half back line.
Yeah it won’t be long, I agree he will break some lines and cause a lot of headaches!

Is the wing a long term possibility too?

We haven’t really got any elite leg speed in our defensive unit, some lovely kicks, but nobody who can break lines and open the game up, apart from maybe Brown. I appreciate Grlj is raw, but I think he’s a sneaky chance to grab a spot on the bench, with a half back rotation. I’m not sure if he’s got the defensive discipline, at this stage in his career, to play the wing under our game plan. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen, because he’s a genuine talent and he’s hungry.

Our VFL team is going to have plenty of quality available!

Notwithstanding the vfl rules with how many afl players can play, this is just to show the depth building!

AFL APP gives top 5 in a game. Markov is 2nd fastest player ever.
Menadue 35km/h

32 km/h + players.. 2025. (elite)
Mansell, Vlas, Brown, Broad, Tresize, Miller, Banks, Trainor, Hugo, Faull, Balta, Green, Sonsie, Campbell, MRJ, Gibcus.

31 km/h in 2025 extremely fast

Blight, Lalor, Smith, Young.

we aint slow

At the start of the year, yeah I would agree.
Wondering if that will be the case by the end of the season
Yeah spot on.

I think that might be the case with a few of the elder players.

At some point there needs to be a changing of the guard in some spots.

But early part of the season I think experience will hold spots but a slight shift may come in the back half.

Ideally we still need some of:

Vlastuin, Short, Prestia, Lynch to go around again next year too, assuming Broad retires as he mentioned earlier.

Out of those 4 I’d say Vlastuin and Short could still have meaningful roles where as Lynch and Prestia might look a bit different.

I’d like to see Mansell moved into a lock down role down back on the oppo’s best small fwd. This makes space for Alger up forward with Rioli. Put talent up front and Alger deserves a start on the back of an excellent pre season. Reward effort, selection integrity

I really hope Tyler does step it up. He has skills that are elite, but has obviously had some other issues. If he can be that AFL quality player we just got ourselves a much deeper midfield (broadly defined) and our ability to move the ball just got better.

Similar with MRJ. His best is extraordinary. The rest is often ... walking.

Loving what I'm hearing from these 5ish year players. They seem to have suddenly got a rocket up their behinds and hopefully can become good AFL players. If they do our depth has just skyrocketed. Our rebuild then started around 2021.

and the be fair the rocket (if it occured) is warranted.

with the draftees we have taken the past 2 years if those 3-5 year players don't step it up they will get passed.

really good timing for them to step up and guide the club forward.

Agree 100%

It does get me excited that we might just see the talent of Gibcus, Banks, Brown, Sonsie and Clarke be fulfilled. Quite probably not. But if they all do come through it transforms our list.

And seeing MRJ stepping up to another level preseason is awesome.

I was worried that Campbell was another of those elite athletes with footy skills who just coasts on their talent. But it sounds like he has an amazing attitude and work ethic. If he does keep improving then we have a rolled gold A grader there. only real issue is that it'll make the comparisons to the 2017-2020 team problematic, because we didn't have anyone like him. Super fast, skilled, hard working and dangerous guy who can rip games apart with his speed. I hope that he does take Grilj under his wing and we get 2 of that type :screamcat:

Course, thing never go that straightforwardly, but you can dream.
