Joe Fonti

The Giants have been raving about the form of young defender Fonti across the summer. After 22 games across his first two seasons on the club's list, Fonti is starting to put his athletic traits to good use and looks to be a lock for Adam Kingsley's Opening Round side. His aerial ability at 189cm means he can complement key defensive options like Sam Taylor, Jack Buckley and Harry Himmelberg, while he can also run and adds penetration off half-back. His power and aerobic capabilities have even seen him spend stints of the summer on a wing. Watch for Fonti to become a regular in 2026. - Riley Beveridge

Fonti is also likely to take mark of the year at some stage. He can get UP!

Really great 3rd running defender though. Great job to walk into that Perryman role after he left and Stone was left unturned.

Is McMullin injured?
Somewhere in this thread there's a one-sentence comment from the club about a minor injury. We presume that's why he wasn't in the game sim against Pies. He's not been on any official injury list (yet). However, given the nature of the club's injury reporting, I wouldn't stake anything of value in a bet over what his situation is. The pre-season game team list for the Swans will give us the next insight.

Few interesting snippets from this story ...

The injury tally grew in last week's match simulation against Collingwood, as Brent Daniels and Cody Angove suffered hamstring injuries. Greene believes the pair will be out for several weeks.

Greene played 66 minutes of the Origin clash in a bid to get him cherry-ripe for the start of the 2026 season. However, given his interrupted run-in, coach Adam Kingsley requested he play on managed minutes. "There was that question asked," Kingsley said on SEN. "I was pretty keen for Toby to be involved in it, for what he's done for the game and how desperate he was to play but I would've liked him to manage his minutes a little better."

"I was a little bit underdone," Greene told Zero Hanger at the AFL's Captain's Day. "I've still got a couple of weeks to go to really hit match fitness.

Riley obviously only watches the u/18s. I think everyone on here would have called him a regular in 2025, cant recall him going out of the side other than for injury.

Well, Joe didn't start last season in the AFL team. Once he came in for round 8 he stayed, hence was a regular from there. I think it's just consolidating what most GWS fans expected.

ironically, by the middle of last year he was cemented in the first choice team.
I think he is less cemented right now, Harvey Thomas seems to be playing off the back and Harrison Oliver looks a real good player.
Pretty sure he'll get first crack, but there is more pressure for spots now than most of last year.

He was suspended for the skit.
2 of those games.

Irrespective of the suspension, he wasn't first choice in that role at the start of last year - they clearly gave Conor Stone the first run. He didn't convince. Fonti did once he was given the opportunity.

I don't really understand what you're griping about in the story. The premise was "the player about to explode" at each club. Fonti locked in his spot last year, but still has levels to improve. I'd be very happy if he does so.

I would hope there are others who explode too. Gothard, Rowsten, Cadman, Ough. If we get a few to improve this season, it would push us towards a flag.

McMullen ;)

Being forced to play some younger guys early in the season might not be a bad thing, wouldn't surprise me if a few of them end up being best 23 by season end. I like Bedford but I'm looking forward to seeing Hannaford and Gothard in our opening round team, think they have more upside that him and may not have got a shot to show they are better if we had no injuries.

Yes ... this is my view as well. I love guys like Bedford, but some of these young guys surely have much higher ceilings

Anyone who watched the last episode of the documentary would've seen quite clearly Kingsley's thoughts on where the future is and where the growth in the output of the squad will come from.

Great insight and actually gave me a fair bit of hope for the upcoming season. Looking forward to it.

Hannaford was terrific in the praccy. He looks like a serious player.
Harry Oliver was very impressive as well.
Our depth is exceptional.
A lot of those outside the squad are up to it for sure.

Views on the standout player for each club during last week’s simuls - it seems Rowston could be the key for us this year and in the future.

Greater Western Sydney: Harry Rowston

After a season-ending injury to Tom Green that threatened to derail the Giants' season before it even started, GWS fans were crying out for some hope.

Clayton Oliver impressed in his first game in a Giants jumper, collecting 30 disposals to fill the void of Green, but it was youngster Harry Rowston that should particularly have Giants fans excited.

With just 17 games to his name throughout the first three years of his career, there is still a lot of unknown about Rowston. But with 26 disposals and five marks against Collingwood, the one thing the 21-year-old showed was that he knows how to find the footy. Could he become a regular in the Giants' engine room alongside Oliver and Finn Callaghan.
