Moore mentioned on 3AW that we’ll see a lot of new faces in the team this season (obviously) but it’s nice to hear that it’s not just coming from the fans but internally at the club. They think these kids are ready and are clearly eager to expose them to senior footy which is exciting.

OR selection will be fascinating.
That’s good to hear

Is it time to “evolve” and develop a tagger in the team. I’m thinking Crisp might be best suited, otherwise a newbie like Anderson.
NWM would be a good first up assignment.
Sidey did it a couple times during the back half of 2024

For me, it's more a case of that's basically our best team.

20 of them played every week when fit last year. (I'm including McStay). They'll all play if fit.

Of the other 3, Buller has been brought in to play seniors. He'll get a shot to start. Particularly as we didn't start West in the praccy match. And Allan and Steele looked pretty good in the practice match and help with the biggest issue in the team - running.

It'll change if someone else does very well in the north practice match, Parker, Anderson, Harrison the most likely. Allan or Steele struggle Or someone else doesn't get up.
While I agree the hope we bought Buller in with was to slot into the 1sts but he is also a 24 yo 10 gamer who Sydney traded to us for close to free. That should temper expectations. He isn't a lock like other recent traded in players were.

He needs a decent showing against NM to be sure of a spot. He didn't have much of a game v GWS so there is a bit of pressure on him.

Certainly not a lock, but we have poached him from another club who wanted to keep him. I'll be surprised if he doesn't play against the Saints.

Agree. I expect him to play. I guess what I am saying is don't play a bad one against NM. Not sure how much Syd wanted to keep him. Once Curnow was in with McLean and Amartey ahead of him also his prospects for senior footy there in 26 didn't look good. Syd gave him up pretty easily. A future 3rd for a future 4th. Ideally they would have liked him but recognised they didn't have much to offer him compared to us.

2 weeks until our first game

St Kilda look very sharp and ready to explode out of the blocks

Worried if we use Buller as second ruck against TDK and Marshall
We may need to debut Steene

Fingers crossed Moore is ready to play
Why would we use Buller against TDK - It would be a very dumb plan by Fly.

Ned Long was destroyed twice in the back half of the year by the Brions - I want to see Anderson play.

First game of the season will most likely be a fast tempo game - would rather have a more mobile side re Membrey

I don't think either should be walk up starts especially Long.
Long destroyed Adel, and that’s what makes him best 23. When the game was there to be won in the 3 QTR he was outstanding- that was a match winning performance - his coming of age.
And the performance that makes him a starter in every game.

I think developing a tagger could also help us minimise the negative of having slightly less talent in the midfield with Pendles moving out and the younger inexperienced recruits needing time to develop.

Long has also had a massive pre-season from all the reports from regular track watchers. His running has improved another level. I actually expect him to be one of our stronger contributors all year.

B - B.Maynard - B.Frampton - I.Quaynor
HB - S.Pendlebury - D.Moore - D.Houston
C - J.Crisp - J.DeGoey - P.Lipinski
HF - B.McCreery - J.Buller - S.Sidebottom
F - J.Elliott - D.McStay - L.Schulz
R - D.Cameron - N.Long - N.Daicos
I - H.Perryman - J.Daicos - T.Membrey - E.Allan - R.Steele
EMG: J.Cochran - W.Parker - C.West - L.Sullivan - A.Anderson

  • The above 28 are the players in the frame to play opening round from those available. Moore is doubtful, with Cochran a certainty if he is unavailable.
  • I expect Harrison will start the year in the VFL (along side Reef) and be built up with a string of games before pushing his way into the side.
  • I would love for West to play round 0 but I think they will go with Membrey to start the year. I expect West to force that change early in the season.
  • Ed Allan & Roan Steele's positions will come down to their performances in the game against North Melbourne, with Parker and Anderson also looking like strong options for opening round.
  • Don't sleep on Sullivan, Fly seems to like him and he was a mainstay in the side last year before his injury so I wouldn't be shocked to see him there in the 23.
Like everyone else on here, I think this is perfect.

Can't wait to watch the game against North this weekend. The competition for Opening Round selection is fascinating;

West, Hayes, Anderson, Parker, Cochran, Sullivan, Steele and Allan are going to give it a proper crack you'd expect!

It’s pretty easy to see those senior players that were rested in yesterday’s game are auto inclusions, including long.

During the latter part of preseason you can see who is in the preferred team A and the coaches view Long being a core part. He’s had a flawless preseason. Looks stronger. Has put on more size but also trimmed down where he is able to cover more ground.

That backline is a little concerning 😳

Adelaide are hardly the benchmark midfield of the competition.

I think it won't be long (no pun intended) before people see that Anderson will have that spot in the team. If that is proven incorrect then feel free to remind me.

NWM has pretty much never been tagged. Would be interesting to see how he handles it

The sub rule is no longer?

I think Lipinski is a good ball user when under little or no pressure. The Carlton game I thought he hit people lace out inside 50m.

When we play well, he plays well. But I don't think he is the reason we play well. For example his best quarter in the Prelim was the second when the team was up and about. But he was also one of those that went missing when it mattered.

But it's fine I do realise that Lipinski is a popular player amongst the masses
Your right on the money
He is a bit of a downhill skier with good skills and polish
He’s good in a good team
Lippy rarely plays well when we get beaten
He’s not getting dropped tho while fly is coach

He played well against crows and was terrible in preliminary

Feeling in 2026 again a season with bumper Collingwood attendances.
They keep on getting bigger and bigger.
Does anyone know if Craig McRae had a had in the Hawthorn flags of 2013,2014 and 2015.
I know he did at Richmond in 2017, 2019 and maybe 2020.
Have a feeling with the Hawthorn flags was say 2 out of the 3.
Just like to know.
I know he has been at the Pies before was in 2016.
And Sydney around 2005 or 2006.
Won 3 flags with the Lions tho player 2001-2003.

I think he was only at hawks in 2020 before he came to us

Just the one year at Hawthorn. 2021. Assistant ( forwards ) coach .

Adel finished on Top - so by any measure their midfield was quite capable.

Ask yourself a simple question - why wasn’t one of our more fancied mids able to turn the game in the 3rd QTR instead of Long - particularly as you have essentially decided he is our weakest mid and should be overlooked for Anderson.
How did our weakest mid change the course of such a high pressure sudden death game ?

These are simple observations that sensible review would conclude, you are way off the mark.

Defenders:
Moore, Frampton, Quaynor, Maynard, Houston, Daicos, Perryman

Mids:
Cameron, Daicos, DeGoey, Long, Pendles, Allan, Steele, Lipinski, Steene

Forwards:

McStay, McReery, Elliott, Schultz, Sullivan, Sidebottom, Buller

Its a solid team, but not sure i see where big improvement comes from last year.

I know it's a bit late now, but could Ed Allan play as a shutdown defender? We need speed back there

I think it comes from the expectations that we'll see natural improvement from within from the likes of; Long, Allan, Steele, West and somehow Nick.

Also I'm in the camp that we'll see year on year improvement from the likes of; DeGoey, Houston and McStay.
