Especially when we based our trades and trade requests (curnow and Sydney deal) on what we will need to get Cody next year.

It’s embarrassing and worse than that it’s corrupt by the afl.
Of course it is. Do you expect honest behaviour from the AFL? The number of times they've changed the rules on the fly is unbelievable. They could give lessons on corruption to FIFA.

I don't know if it is corruption or not, to be honest, but it looks to me to be simple incompetence.
Hanlon's Razor: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Not saying that they don't hate us, mind you.

Put the concept of parking Cody away, the boy may love the club but sitting for a year would probably cost him the best part of a million dollars over the space of what is a short career.

I would like to know how anyone suggests we can pay him over the year off without setting off alarm bells also.

cough***cough

Which can only come from 2 picks
I’m sure our list management team and CD are smart enough to come up with a workaround.

Suddenly, the prospect of just Cody and Zac Bailey (FA) would seem a decent return.

The way I see it, if we finish first and Sydney finishes second, we will start with around 2,000 points. They say they will cap the deficit. If that’s around 300 to 500 points, we will be short. But not by much. Picks will slide so the deficit in my example could be as much as 800 points. But that's worst case (it requires us and Sydney to have out of the box years).

If both teams finish in the bottom half of the 8, I think we will be covered with maybe a slight deficit.

Having those two picks already is massive, because we'd be effed if we had to find one.

Yeah, we will pay overs (thanks AFL), but we have done everything we can to ensure they couldn’t totally screw us.

Looking at the DVI, the FA pool this year and the likelihood that a bid for Cody will come early.

Even if he’s bid on at pick 2 (2481 points) we should be fine assuming no other changes.

With the 10% discount, we need 2233 points to match from two picks. Let’s say Sydney wins the flag and gets pick 18, Bailey gets the Lions band 1 and Butters is traded.

Pick 19 (Sydney) = 796 points
Balance = 1437 to match (Pick 8 or 11th place)

Even if we finish 6th this year for example, we’re only short by ~400 points. We also have 2 x 2nds to move around and upgrade one of those 1sts. The current allowable deficit is 1167 points to carry over.

The AFL is a joke for still not announcing the changes as the season is about to start but I have no doubt the club is well prepared to match no matter what.

The big one is the deficit they allow. If they dont allow a deficit good chance we lose Cody.

But all the talk previously is that a deficit will remain.

I dont think trading up will be viable. Nobody will be much interested in our 2027 picks (making the timing of these chsnges extra unfair). It's just so costly to move even a couple spots up the 1st round .

I personally would have liked to see the club fight these changes harder through the media. They shouldnt but the AFL has shown it responds to that sort of pressure.

Don't Port have Cochrane who's also in the mix for pick one?
He’d be in the mix, but historically (outside of JUH) academy and father-son prospects don’t tend to attract the first bid.

Clubs like North, WCE and Richmond usually want the PR boost that comes with officially taking Pick 1.

West Coast did bid early on Dean, but I can’t see them being petty enough to call Walker’s name at No.1.

I swear they have posted this same article six times over the last 12 months and we are still yet to know what the changes will be. Each time it's been "in the coming months"
It’s a disgrace the AFL haven’t told the club what the new rules are yet!! They were supposed to tell the clubs towards the end of last year.

It's click bait.

The only journo I'd listen to on this matter as the AFL feeds him bits and pieces to drip feed the public is Cal Twomey. He's said multiple times we will be able to get him even with the rules changing.

At this point, it doesn't matter if they tell us tomorrow, in 3 months or in 6 months time...

There is nothing we can do until trade period to improve our draft hand other than tank...

These rules should have been announced before trade period last year! My bet is that they were going to until the clubs fought back and asked questions that they hadn't anticipated and hence had to hold off until they could work something out.

The fact that a #1 bid on Cody will cost us pick #8 + #10 in value is really tough...

Let's hope that Sydney have a really shit year...

Think we should end Greg Swann’s executive football life if they kick on with this!
Absolute target to destroy him. What a pillock! Laura Kane just changed the rules…

I know all the talk is about possible changes for matching a Cody bid...

...but is anyone else still livid that WCE bid on Dean @ 3?

Or is it just me?
