Unfortunately we get screwed, but really that’s how the system should work. You want to draft a gun then you pay for it with a gun or high draft picks.

From a free agency perspective, clubs getting the player should be paying up and not affecting the draft by adding another pick to the draft order. The key point is the free agent wanting to move gets to their club of choice unencumbered, but the club grabbing that player pays for it by using their own draft picks. Use the DVI to upgrade a draft pick to the required level if the value of transferred draft pick/s don’t match the value of the player leaving based on the AFL’s secret herbs and spices formula to get within the compensation bands.

Yeah but not without giving clubs a couple years notice... you don't just dump it on them on the same year...

Walker will be playing VFL this season with us, just how much is unsure. I wonder just how much we can get him to slide by doing this or is he already going to be a fully known quantity going into the draft regardless of what happens? I can see teams doing this with father son prospects in the future, straight to the VFL where their performances can be managed to ensure they get to the club they want. Some may call draft tampering, IMO it's fair game, there are no rules saying you have to play in the talent league.

There is a scenario where Walker may slide a little and there is a scenario where Sydney may also slide. Best case scenario for Carlton because it gives us an absolute warchest. We would be the team going into the trade and draft period with the most currency and a very health salary cap which could get interesting for us.

Conspiracy theory number 2; the AFL are waiting to see how well Carlton goes this season before deciding whether we can recruit Walker, or not.
Conspiracy Theory #3 -

The only reason St Kilda are pushing so aggressively for changes to the bidding and DVI system is to make sure Cody doesn’t end up breaking SOS’s games record in the No. 1 guernsey.

We could fix that for StK, we could just scrape the three Silvagni name from the no 1 locker and from the history books.

I know some of the Silvagni stuff is said in jest, but I cannot help but be in awe of Sergio Silvagni and what he did for Carlton, both on and off the field (helping to bring in generations of fans). It's sad where the Silvagni family find themselves at the moment, and I am glad we now have distance from the current situation.
But I doubt JSOS will play 100 games for (SK), due to age plus injury history. And hopefully with the passing of time, maybe another generation of Silvagnis will be at Carlton.
But for now (especially if Cody does get to Carlton), the #1 jumper is the 'Walker jumper'.

There will be a push by the likely holders of the early picks for a "protected zone" in the early part of the draft that FS and academy picks can't be matched. I think the AFL might realise that will start a legal war though.
Just wish the AFL would comprehend and /or understand that FS are different to Academy picks and should be treated differently.

Academy picks are to offset the lack of F/S’s GCFC & GWS have access to due to their infancy. Until that is smoothed out, they are the same thing but they’re at a disadvantage for some time yet.
TAS will get access to local league & potentially any TAS born AFL players that qualify.

BL & Swans get the best of both worlds due to being in the wanted growth markets.

Academies are doing their job & footy in QLD is producing = less “go-home factor” for VIC draftees, as was the plan.

Veterans list can hopefully return soon.

If STK had their way, all the “inequities” would be gone. Better just booting them from the comp than adjusting rules on their whinging.

How can they be the same, when Academy kids are being produced 10 times more than FS picks?

They need to reduce the amount of Academy pick no. available every year per team or even draft selection round.
FS are a historical part of the teams and probably the last part associated with all the founding teams.
The AFL need to be logical and keep some kind of nostalgia with the majority of supporters still a part of these teams, else IMO, supporters will walk away from the completion for good.

The new teams such as Adelaide, Port Fremantle, and WC are getting FS now. GC and GWS will as well. They can keep Academy picks until such a time, but at a fair level. Tasmania will be allowed the same.

IMO, GC have manipulated the system and have caused this issue. I also don’t buy the excuse of growing the game in the GC area by letting them cheat the system!!

SA & WA clubs had the state leagues to bridge the gap for the WAFL & SANFL qualifying players, well sort of..Ross Gibbs anyone…?, as TAS will.

Would like to see F/S’s pre-listed. Free hit but so what, swings and roundabouts on the access to players, and if clubs are investing in their development from juniors it’s a welcome result for that.

GCFC haven’t manipulated anything…it’s the ol’ rules set up for a purpose and the result of the changes are disliked by certain clubs agendas & outrage as we’re so disadvantaged. Why should anything have to be capped because it’s successful & also bolstering the sport as a whole?

If the must hold 2 first round draft picks, for matching any available f/s or academy draftees is implemented, then it’s going to be impossible to match multiple top end prospects…

Matching just one will be difficult enough, clubs who have f/s if planned properly should be able to get their player, clubs with multiple highly rated academy & f/s’s players are going to struggle to obtain them, unless they’re willing to sacrifice heavily for the required draft equity…

Academy’s are probably going to lose their share of talent across particular drafts from now on, any f/s should not also be aligned as a NGA to a different club as well, makes zero sense…

NGA rules needs to be seriously considered and changed, seems like the AFL’s original qualifications have become very blurred, particularly now with the reasons behind its introduction & why it was originally created for…

For whatever their incompetencies, the AFL spent a lot of time and effort, data etc. working out the changes that they brought in for the 2025 draft.

To even consider changing them again on a whim without any analysis of the efficacy of the now current rules is plainly absurd.
They would (you would assume) have done the same when they changes the rules for the 2024 draft as well.

Do not give these scum at AFL house a shred of benefit of the doubt, they are incompetent and biased.

I guarantee they will relax the rules again after this season.

Simple, no player is worth screwing the club over. Thus if Cody goes at 1 and we cannot match then he does a bailey smith or jamarra. We then trade a 2nd for him.

How will he do a Bailey Smith or Jamarra?
