NOW to sometime later in the year (maybe) - Talk about anything

I think North Ringwood is benefiting from having a large junior program with more than 25 teams over each of the past three seasons. Given that, it doesn’t surprise me that they currently have enough players to field three women’s teams. However, I’m not convinced that this level of participation will be sustainable in the long term.
Who else has women’s sides out that way? Not sure if Norwood or ringers do, east Ringwood maybe 1 or 2? Mooroolbark? South Croydon? Could be an open area for females out there

Park Orchards, Norwood, East Ringwood, South Croydon (2), CNMLOC, Mooroolbark, Kilsyth all had women's teams last year.

How’s Nunawadings numbers. Looking at the clearances 9 mens players have been bought in. Literally no recruits of note, most barely have played reserves.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see 200-350 point loses weekly incoming unless I’m missing something.

With only one side.

Could they pull out on the eve of the season? or during it?

I mean I suppose some 19s stayed on..

How much of their “depth” stay on to play for Berwick on Friday nights instead of playing at any other club? A couple of injuries and unavailability then what??

I get the league wanting to support clubs but this has absolute disaster written all over it.

Not good at all. Debacle

We saw 384-0 in the vafa D3 last season. That could be in jeopardy this year.

While they’re not at Nunawading’s level, there’s other clubs struggling for senior numbers too. Including Noble Park, who are in Premier Division.

Some other club people around the traps are a bit dismayed by a bit of a trend they see, being a lack of engagement in pre-season. Plenty of players assuring their clubs they will play, but showing little to no interest in training through pre-season - certainly not more than once per week.

With no pressure to get a game, they’re just not motivated.

Every club goes through periods of lean numbers. But letting a team return to field 1 side is another.

We should have a better idea of which teams are playing once the final draws are released. The EFNL has set a date for clubs to nominate their teams—possibly by the end of next week.

Even then, there is still some uncertainty. For example, in the Under 19s, the Premier Div 1 and Div 2 fixtures have been released, but not all clubs listed may actually field a team. We also don’t yet know which teams will be in Div 3 and 4.

The same applies to the Women’s with Div 4 and 5 not released, as well as the Vets competition. The final fixtures may highlight whether more clubs are struggling with player numbers.

A couple of months ago I thought Noble would do OK. Looking at their transfers, 15 out, 7 in, makes things look very different. After looking at Vermonts recruits and speaking to an insider last week, they should do very well.

No way stevo is going back to FTG for a VFL bye. Thats purely a ticked box. AFL 2nd chance dream on the line no way he's risking that.

How TF do mooroolbark have so many.

Have they updated the rules on VFL games? NFNL they did i think, something like 9 VFL games disqualifies a return and must have played at least 4 local games.

How many of rowvilles 9 are 1 pointers?

Boronia 0 surprises me. Mellis was supposed to play the Sydney VFL game the other week before the flooding called it off. Also thought Preston was still VFL aligned? Boronia the team to beat in DIV1 imo if they dont have any VFL players and are all at Boronia full time

Most local leagues have scrapped the “too many games at VFL level” rule. You just have to have played 3 local games.

It’s ridiculous but another case of the metro leagues competing with each other. They all want the best players playing in their comps so they follow each other and make the rules as lax as possible.

The EFNL have ditched it. You used to be ineligible for EFNL finals if you played 9 or 10 VFL games. No longer. You just have to play 3 games for your local club. And all do because of the timing / byes etc.

It’s most ridiculous in the VAFA where some clubs have 15-20 VFL players. Come finals you have teams that may have that many players who’ve only played a few games throughout the year. It’s a farce.

Interestingly the rule remains in the EFNL for Coates League and VFLW - if they play 10 games at that level they can’t play local finals.

3? what a joke. 1-2 of the byes, plus one more somewhere and you're in!

I think the vafa have at least upped their minimum games to 4 instead of 2, after nathan jones came in for old peninsula at the end of the year. Dont quote me on it though

Good, the VFLW is a shambolic competition that serves no true purpose. its not afl-w reserves, not all teams are represented, and doesn't even run side by side with the afl-w.

The premier vafa womens grade is just wherever the vfl-w players want to go and win a flag, and good luck everyone else. the top 3-4 win by ten-fifteen goals every week vs bottom 4.

This has given the EFNL women's some life, after only having a 6 team premier comp 5 years ago.

Few years ago in Outer East, one of the Seville players (Josh Neal??) even got the league to move the game forwards on the Saturday so he could play and qualify for finals. I think all he did was sign the team sheet and play for his VFL team later that afternoon.

Haha. I think most leagues have now specifically changed their rules to “must take the field”, though sure that kind of stuff still goes on.

Hopefully something has been done about qualifying in the seniors too. Given to play senior finals, you’ve typically always just had to play for any team at the club. Quite a few interesting examples in recent years in the SFNL, VAFA etc. Gun VFL players qualifying for local finals by apparently “playing” in a few Friday night clubbies / thirds games. Fair chance they were never within 10km of the ground on the night…

One of the biggest and best junior programs in melbourne can't produce enough u19's. We are seeing the landscape change, back 15-20 years ago its just what you did. Now kids don't wanna wake up at 7am on a saturday, or working instead.

Correct the EFNL used to have more than 12 VFL games and that player couldn't play finals. Then AFL Vic changed to rule to 3 local games which local leagues accepted for 2025. For 2026 the NFNL have increased that number from 3 to 4 or known as the Heidelberg Rule! The EFNL have left it at 3 local games

Wrong Josh - it was Josh Fraser and iirc he was coaching at VFL either that afternoon or the next day. Would have been 2017 or 2018, and he definitely played at least the first quarter.
The rule now is a player can only get credit for finals eligibility, one game per week and that is at the highest level. If you play U19's and Seniors in the same weekend - the U/19 game doesn't count towards finals eligibility. Same for VFL and local footy - the VFL games counts not the local game
