VAFA General Discussion

Money is starting to creep in to woman's football as well, not the same amount of cash as the mens but alot of 50 to 100 dollars a game now in southern

Eastern too i've heard.
Plus VFL-W is a joke that runs alongside local competitions, whenever VFL-W clubs decide they need players, they decide on friday leaving local clubs scrambling for numbers with 0 time, hence way more forfeits happening and a general shitshow each week.

SBMT deciding to not have a womans team/s for the upcoming season. Interesting post on the club FB page over the last few days.

I personally thought their program was going really well, especially with the recent success both of their sides had.
Therry Penola the same - 2 premiership’s since the competition started and competitive every year although wont have a side in 2026 at this point.

Most teams in EDFL around us are handing out 2 year deals on $75-$100 per game.

Yeah, can understand that. What's EDFL women's like?

I knew a time would come when woman got paid to play, didn't think it would be this soon though.

Impossible to compete in an area where professional clubs are offering those terms.

Any club/league initiative’s on Anzac Day?

Hearing Therry & Elsternwick are hosting an offical ceremony backed by the RSL

Based on past experience, St. Bernards link up with a nearby RSL for home Anzac matches. Possible link up with Newport RSL and Willi CYs

They have a ground in Port that's where they should be
They don’t have a ground at Port. The school has a ground at Port. They don’t play there for the same reason that Scotch, Haileybury, Xavier, Collegians, St. Kevins Caulfield Gr. and most other school-based teams don’t play at their school, i.e. it is fully booked up with school sport on a Saturday. Some clubs such as Carey, Trinity et al are fortunate enough to have access to facilities off campus with multiple grounds but even then, match times are often shifted around based on the school sport timetable. This is why these clubs need to find council grounds.

On another note - its seems that the facilities at EP have improved substantially since OMs became a tenant. That has to be a good thing.

Weren't they given the ground in good faith to use for a year, while their own was out of order only to never leave?

OM's are the council tenant just like Ormond is at Gunn. Government/council funding for upgrades was tied to OMs tenancy (and to a lesser extent Elsternwick CC) not the VAFA. The VAFA was the beneficiary of the council tenants. The school has sporting fields at Port Melbourne - what does that have to do with the football club??

That’s not my understanding. If I recall their move to EP was announced with some fanfare as being permanent so doubt it was a one-year arrangement. Unless the VAFA own the ground (and I don’t believe they do) the lease is with the City of Bayside so they can hardly just take tenancy for a year and then refuse to leave. Either way the facilities, infrastructure and playing surface have improved substantially since OM’s took up residency. How much they contributed to that I really don’t know but I expect the improvements were conditional on an anchor club tipping some $ in. The ground out the back has also had a makeover as well, and not before time.

Soul less place EP particularly in winter. Om's barely draw a crowd of 50 people and away even worse. The after match is like a ghost town and they have been treading water for some time. They are almost like Uni club.

How would someone from OGs know about the after-match?

Correct.

Please come in and enjoy a warm can of whoever is sponsoring the VAFA and you have 3 minutes to drink it before we close the doors.

Do comeback though.....

I haven't been back since I almost drowned when the ground flooded on B grade GF day. If I ever go back I'll be wearing a life jacket!

Agree. A soul less windswept $hit hole. Albeit the ground and amenity have improved substantially I hate the joint. OMs are welcome to it.
