I wanted to give a shout out to a couple of games but our existing underrated/underappreciated game threads are pretty ancient. We easily keep track of every major release but there are constantly games flying under the radar. Feel free to drop anything you think might be slept on in here but keep it somewhat recent, at least current gen, so it's not just name dropping retro games that hardly anyone is going to be able to pick up today. Let this serve as a recommendation thread for those looking for something to play and might not give these games a second look. It doesn't have to be super obscure, but if it doesn't have a thread here and there is hardly any mention of it then that's enough.

Hell is Us

I want to kick it off with Hell is Us. This is extremely slept on. If you search for discussions on it the criticism is its combat. No the combat isn't deep, but it's tight enough and serves enough of a function. It's deep enough that you can make some pretty fun builds which you'll need after the first chapter but it probably lacks a bit of enemy variety and some more boss type battles wouldn't go astray. Combat isn't what the game is about though. If you're into working things out for yourself, environmental story telling and puzzles then this is right at the top. The quest journal only serves as a place to store the people you've met and the clues you've found. It's up to you to find out what they're talking about and where they are. I had to keep an A4 notepad next to me to note down anything that seemed important as well as record things. Not for everyone but this is how games used to be and it was so satisfying in the end. However I recommend getting it on sale though. Depending on how much side content you do or how long it takes you to work things out it's not a massive game. I didn't 100% but did what I could (I refused to look up any guides so just simply couldn't find some side missions or find the solution to every one I had) and it took me 30 hours. It's regularly on sale so grab it then.

Tainted Grail - Fall of Avalon

Second is Tainted Grail - Fall of Avalon. I'm haven't finished it yet so it may yet fall off a cliff but I'm up to the second area after 20 hours. I've seen it blow up on some other communities I'm in but outside of those I don't see it talked about as much as it should. It's basically Skyrim based on a dark take of King Arthur mixed in with Slavic mythology (will be familiar to anyone who has played a Witcher game). It's open world but not a massive open world like an Elder Scrolls game, but rather smaller open world areas that still feel expansive enough. The maps are littered with secrets and I'm still amazed at just how many NPCs have their own quests. Some are basic but many open up into much bigger side quests. Some have implications with other quests depending on dialogue choices or how you deal with them. In a world of Unreal Engine games it's rare to find a game like this built in Unity but together with the art design (models and textures look more like Skyrim or Oblivion Remaster than any attempt at high def ultra realism) it makes for a smaller install size and lighter system overheads. Apparently the PS5 performance is a bit average so that might be worth looking into first but it's pretty smooth on PC. The is actually a roguelike deckbuilder (Tainted Grail - Conquest) that came out previously that I'm going to check out next.

Tainted Grail has a great soundtrack too. Some of it sounds like the kind of stuff you'd hear in Witcher 3 and mixed in with modern dark ambient folk music.

Not sure where this will fall as its hardly an obscure game nor does it have a thread............and its a bit old. I needed to hit a shooting game over the weekend (campaign not multi player) that isnt Call of Duty so I hit gamepass and downloaded Wolfenstein The New Order. This is bloody fun, really like the mechanic of upgrading/getting new skills through how you top a Nazi (stealth or guns blazing). The gun play feels tight as well.

Got to admit, some of the scenes are pretty full on, pretty damn graphic, it aint for kids.

Lost Records is definitely slept on.

I finally got around to it and it was such a beautiful, beautiful game. I cared about the relationships, the dialogue was a little cheesy but totally encapsulated the 90's.

I adored Life is Srrange 1 and 2 and i keep putting off the follow ups, had I not just paid for Clair Obscur I would be diving into them

Tainted Grail - Fall of Avalon
So I really love King Arthur/Arthurian lore and was very excited for this – the devs even sent me a Collector's Edition which was neat, as I was reviewing it. It was a little janky, which I expected and don't mind, and I was enjoying myself until I got to a part where I couldn't progress because I stuffed up and pissed off a camp of people, and in that camp was a character I was meant to speak with (somewhat common after doing some Googling). Unfortunately an older save had been overwritten, so the only answer was to restart, which I wasn't going to do. Reached out to the devs about what I could do but never got a reply haha. Would like to go back to it one day.

There is still a bit of jank but apparently it used to be much worse. I think the current version is 1.2(??) and it's seen as like a 2.0 for the game.

Hopefully if I ever go back it'll be in an even better spot.

Pyre

It did get great reviews on release but I never see it talked about. From the team behind Hades/Bastion but its my favourite from Supergiant.

Fantasy sport game with some of the best storytelling I've encountered. I loved the moral aspect where you wanted to free your favourite characters though it also made finishing the game harder.

Here are some newer, smaller games that I seriously suggest:

BIG HOPS: The best indie, 3D Mario clone out there. Moving around in this game honestly feels as good as Astro Bot / current 3D Mario.

SEKTORI: Made by ex-Housemarque developers. Twin stick, arcade perfection.

PIPSTRELLO: Cool GBA-style 2D action platformer game.

MINOSHOOT ADVENTURES: Another twin stick, but in the style of 2D Zelda.

ESCAPE FROM EVER AFTER: A great Paper Mario spirit successor that's a charm to look at and play.

LETHAL HONOR: Very metal and comic presenting roguelike game. It's good fun if you can stomach a stepdown from Hades.

I think they are available on all consoles too.

Cool thread.

My shoutout goes to Selaco. It got a bit of buzz a while back but it's still in Early Access so that buzz died down a lot. Boomer shooter running on an insanely modified Doom engine. F.E.A.R is another inspiration with its excellent enemy AI. I played through it at launch (currently only Chapter One is available) and it was great fun. I did get lost a few times and had to look up YouTube videos, but I think they've tweaked things here and there since launch to make navigation a bit easier. I'm waiting for Chapter 2 to release later this year before driving back in again, devs are promising a lot of improvements like full voice acting etc going forward, but even as an incomplete Early Access title I highly recommend it, unless you're a bit burned out by the boomer shooter trend I guess.

That part in Fear when you climb down the ladder, turn around and the girl is just there messed me up 😭

True Crime: Streets of LA I feel was underrated. Put alot of hours into that game

Never played a True Crime game per se, but what was going to be True Crime 3 became Watchdogs. I know on this board that game is held up, but it really should have had a bigger footprint in broader culture.

Song of Horror - this game made me realise how important the save system is in a game and this one nailed it in my opinion. Horror games lose a lot of edge and tension when you can reload a save 30 seconds prior. This one gave you 3, 4, or 5 characters to play as per episode with permadeath. No weapons, and quick-time events which can kill your character gave it quite an on-edge experience.

Not sure it gets the credit it deserves because it is AA and a little janky, but the design and idea behind it is one of the best I've played in a horror game.

Only thing that lets the game down is the puzzles are obnoxiously obtuse, I had to use a guide for a few of them.

Would you recommend 1 over 2 and Legion? I need a new game. Doom is just not doing it for me.

So I was actually meant to type Sleeping Dogs and I think Jimmy Colorado did as well but I still knew what he meant because Sleeping Dogs was the successor to True Crime. 🧐

So disregard the Watchdogs comment but for the record the first two are decent junk food games and Legion is poo.

Good thing i asked!

Just had a look. Game is almost 12 years old now. Not sure it would still hold up. 🤔

Horses for courses of course but I'm enjoying it immensely. I 'get' the recruit anyone system and I think it's a great move for an open-worlder. The story is the overall struggle against this near-future Fascist United Kingdom, not the personal character journey.

Zoomed-out storytelling rather than zoomed-in.
