I thought it at the time, but this might go down as one of the worst decisions our club has ever made. Trading our loyal, dedicated captain (who didn't want to leave) for peanuts, when he still had gas left in the tank. We sure could've used his grunt in the midfield today.

He had the highest fantasy points on the ground (either team) in a 48 point loss.
So you have him in your fantasy team then? As captain?

Wilson is making me look like an idiot. Was elite today.

Also how much would an AFL club pay for a win and 4 points. Reckon the $$$ we spent on liam ryan are worth every cent.

Without ryan we lose that game.

First half was excellent other than some terrible set shot goal kicking. Then tried to protect the lead for the entire second half, shat the bed and almost lost the game.

Glad to get a win but it was far from convincing.

Nas probably played his best game for the year but I'm not sure if I saw him break out of a jog. Must be playing injured.

TDK is quite good in the center clearance hitouts but he's a very sloppy player. 4 effective disposals out of 21 and 4 missed shots at goal. Honestly concerning how much of the salary cap he is going to chew up for the next 8 years.

Hugo built into the game nicely and was one of the few players who showed a bit of composure and attacking intent in the second half. Progressing very well.

Wilson's first half was awesome. Dropped off majorly in the second but he was a huge part of why we had that lead to protect.

Props to Wood who was a liability in the first two games but contributed well in this one.

Good effort from Tauru to kick 2 goals from 44% TOG.

Monstrous effort from Wilkie when he could barely run for half the game. Was massive in the third quarter.

Windy wasn't as prominent but he beat Toby Greene. Good game

Stocker was a welcome addition. Just a solid, do-the-basics, hard-nosed small defender who straightens us up.

Hideous second half, but at the end of the day it was a win on the road. Thank god we didn't complete the shitting of the bed because at that point we'd be a complete laughing stock

what's the deal with Wilkie? not mentioned in the press conference but he couldn't walk, right? surely he's unlikely for next week.

we're going to go from being too tall down back (4 talls) to too short and inexperienced. not sure a backline of Silvagni + Tauru + Keeler/Barrat is going to win too many games, unfortunately.

Why not Howard?

Wouldn't surprise me if Wilkie just has a bit of bruising/swelling from Hogan landing on his foot. Will probably be fine to play

100%

The 4 quarter effort is what I'm looking at here and we were outplayed for 2.5 quarters and lucked out on their inability to score.

The fact that we were 21 points up with 2:50 on the clock and nearly lost the game is catastrophically bad clock management.
We played well for 4 quarters. What we did do was let some really selfish stuff creep into our game in the second half and we really failed to execute when it mattered.

For example, our scores primarily came from a front half game. Yet numerous times in that second half when we have a chance for territory or just needing a final kick I50 we have Marshall electing to kick - when we had outside runners.

That non Nas handball from Higgins is criminal. He is sore. He has the sides best kick free to waltz in a bread and butter goal for him and chooses to kick himself.

You then have some terrible skills late.

- no idea why Sharman is going the low rocket with 2 minutes left on the last line of defence.

- The hogan goal with 23 seconds left occurs because Wilkie pulls up and can’t run after the spoil. If he is fit. The ball gets locked up.

Last point. The Giants were older and more experienced yesterday. They were always going to come. In the last Flanders and TDK missed gettable opportunities and Oliver sails through a standing start 50m post high wobbler under pressure and Nas can’t get a boot on a ball to seal it.

It broke their way late and we still hung on. Enjoy it because it gets so much harder this week.

Some strange numbers that don't really pass the memory test:

Ryan - 4 touches
Philippou - 8
Tauru - 6
Sharman - 9

Probably a case of them being around the ball, but not actually getting clean hands on it.

Tauru and Philippou at least had short game time.

Sharman did some good things despite limited touches. He plays team footy. Nearly gave me an anxiety attack with his kick out of defence though.

First win of the season, interstate against one of last years finalists and with some strange circumstances on the day and people still find a way to spend the night complaining. And about Steele no less.

It doesnt hurt to just enjoy the good things that happen when they happen.
This. So many Debbie downers in here. How many of you would’ve taken a 4 point win at the start? We are a WIP, will take time to fully hit our straps. Just enjoy the win FFS!

First 1.5 quarters - fantastic. Wilson outstanding. Viking - showed a fair bit.

Last 2.5 quarters GWS dominant - ran much harder than us - very fortunate they butchered their opportunities.

Been banging on about this for 3 years - Pou get yourself a sprint coach - no future in the midfield unless he is more dynamic.

With a quicker game and teams exploiting it, it is a lot harder to block up defence and hold a lead. We need to adjust to it.

Far out, managed to turn that into a flattish win, but I'll always take them. Wilson was superb in the first half, had a good energy about him and was running and carrying through congestion.

He feels like he is about to explode. Obviously confidence was high after playing them last year. Once he gets that every week he’ll be a freak. That Pies game nothing came off but you could see the raw talent and drive. Looks like an impossible match up for other teams. Can go forward like Zac Bailey or rip the wing apart at lightening pace.

Sharman would have had 15+ possessions if he'd not dropped pretty much every mark.

Ryan and Pou are playing injured.

Tauru took mark of the week and kicked a goal when thrown forward, his game was fine.

Tauru equal highest scoring player in the park with 2.1.

Yehhhh…

I get it but I also get that many saints supporters (me included) spent that last 10 minutes in existential dread because it would be so on brand so drop that game from nowhere.

We all understand all the reasons but not many teams can make a win as unenjoyable as we often do.

I don't know how you can say that we played well in our 1 goal to 5 final quarter. The defence held up well under immense pressure in the third but outside of Wilkie heroics, we would have conceded 5-6 goals in that quarter as well. We struggled to move the ball beyond half back after half time.

great to see steele have a huge game, but Im also inclined to believe he might have had a bit of a wakeup call last offseason and it's showing on game day now. Maybe not what do I know but when was the last time he had a game like that for us?
Mybe, but he was definitely playing with some niggles last 2 years with us

Wilkie just looked like cramp

If we were smacked by flu then that is remarkable effort to win away

7 day break and back at Marvel .... Brions are gettable
Definitely not cramp. Was hobbling badly the last quarter. True captains effort yesterday. I reckon he was very grateful for the support from over the fence behind the goals. After the game he broke away from the group first by a good 30 seconds and ran/limped 3/4 of the field to get down to the fence to the cheersquad end. He battled his heart out yesterday. His first half before he got injured was enormous.

Can't believe how much s**t posting of individual players is done (not him but many others). Too many too Richo and look at the negatives over the many positives.

Hilly was awesome yesterday too. That fingertip was vital in the end too!

In the after-match press conference, Ross said, 'We came in healthy.' Not sure this virus issue is as big as it seems.
I thought he implied we were sore and sick. Said we came to win and leave with sore bodies and sore throats or something like that.

The game was a tough watch but we defended tooth and nail for over an hour. I thought it was a mighty effort. I'm only just watching the last quarter now as we went out to a party but we need to remember that sometimes you just need a win. It's a big interstate win for this young group.
