List Mgmt. Welcome Jobe Shanahan (Pick 30, 2024 National Draft)

The Richmond board has a rather fatalistic thread from people not feeling great about their “rebuild” or whatever term you want to give it. It’s still early days but this is their haul with 7 of the top 29 picks last year:

Sam Lalor, Josh Smillie, Taj Hotton, Jonty Faull, Luke Trainor, Harry Armstrong, Thomas Sims

Now there has been some bad luck through injury, but there are some real questionable ones in there. Faull and Hotton were generally not rated ahead of players like Murphy Reid, Bo Allan and Shanahan. To this point these players aren’t really looking like the transformational future that you’d hope for from holding a quarter of the draft’s first 30 picks.

I looked at three phantom drafts from Twomey, ESPN and RookieMe and Shanahan was picked at 12, 12 and 14. So it’s not like we unearthed some diamond in the rough; there were just a huge number of teams ahead of us who stuffed up. Hell, we were rumoured to be offering Hawthorn’s future first to everyone picking in the 20s because we wanted to move up to pick Shanahan, but nobody bit on the deal, so instead we just got to sit at pick 30 and grab him. Incredible stuff.
The early days hindsight draft would definitely put Shanahan and Murphy Reid in the top 10. That makes Jobe the steal of the draft as things stand right now.

After missing most of 2024 with injury Bo Allan is showing that in future hindsight drafts he could also go top 10. Obviously wont get a proper hindsight (gee aren't we good recruiters etc.) look for a decade or so but it's still fun to track ongoing progress.

The **** you mean, stupid head
In fairness, he is one of my 300 odd Facebook friends, so I do feel a little bit special.
As you can imagine, he's not one to post much on social media (a little bit on Instagram from time to time notwithstanding).

Crazy to be reading the cope about Jobe on the tigers board. Apparently he's had plenty of support around him and a better midfield hitting him lace out.

Wonder what excuse they would pivot to if they were reminded that he only came in last year after both Waterman and Allan went down.
A much more rational cope would be that it sometimes takes good key forwards a few years to emerge, and maybe Shanahan came in more polished but Faull and Armstrong may become better players down the track. I disagree, but that’s a lot more realistic cope than the Eagles’ much-maligned midfield is just giving their forwards incredible supply.

Given that Shanahan was widely regarded as a better prospect than the three talls they picked ahead of him, I can understand why some of their supporters are not thrilled with the early signs.

After the past few years, i never thought i'd see the day the supply our forwards are being given described as incredible, but im here for it

They are legit hoping Harry Armstrong has a serious injury so they can excuse his poor form. It’s absurd levels of copium they have

that is true, port mids did hit him lace out. "Grandma can get the good crockery out when he comes around".

How is THE GUN coping? I only have one on ignore list and it is that Kent. My life has significantly been happier since that day.

Noticed it over the weekend that even when jobe gets out bodied by bigger guys he doesn’t really hit the ground or get moved far off the drop of the ball and it still allows himself to still stay involved in the play. One example was that Duursma free, his man out bodied him with ease but he still came back and got his hand to it. His body positioning at this age is already elite and I reckon in a few years time his 1v1 work will be more fun to watch than Waterman in 24 and Darling in 18-19. His got quite good footy iq but having waterman around should really help him master that craft.

You know, people hang a lot of shit on Dwayne, but at least he is memorable. It's actually a marvel that he managed to tell an entire story in about 2 sentences and 5 seconds. Sure, it was ham-fisted, but at least he was excited. Compare him to BT who had to record a new commentary because his initial reaction to Bolton's mark of the year was so lack-lustre (AFL should have recorded it with someone else just to stick to him).

Let's not forget Dawayne's "Against the team that didn't want him!" and "Does Geelong have a safe word?"

Honourable mention to his favourite "Can I have this dance?"

This is my favourite post so far:
"I might be right at this point but the reason we choose the other two over him was because he did not have the same upside. He has the size already but is a one trick pony. He will be a good forward but both Armstrong and Faull have the capability of developing into monster goal kickers. We just need to give them time"
Seriously delusional.

Haha yeah I read that. Truly hilarious.

I did like the Tiggers poster saying that to be 'monster goal kickers' they should probably start by kicking goals.

Apparently the bloke who kicked 11 goals in his first 3 VFL matches just after turning 18 years old did not have the same potential. 🤷‍♂️

Matthew Lloyd calling Jobe "one of the best marks in the league".

Like, he's pretty good, it could be true and we love him but might be a touch early to be making such statements.

Yep, his one-trick is marking on the lead, taking contested marks, kicking goals from everywhere, ground ball gets, hardball gets, intercept marking.

So basically being the GOAT at everything is his one-trick.

I'll take it.

Gee, wouldn’t be like the footy media to get carried away would it?

Yep, he was almost leading the forward line at the end of the season.

He and Bailey Williams were the last talls standing.
