Not quite the thrilling round that was last week, but there was still plenty to discuss from Round 7. Let’s wrap it up…
Dogs v Swans, Thursday evening: Must be seriously frustrating watching this as a Dogs supporter - the stuffing falling out of a promising season due to injuries. If there’s one glimmer of hope, it’s that everyone said they couldn’t win in 2016 after a similar spate of season-enders and look how that turned out. As for the Swans, not sure there’s much to read into a win over a weakened opponent but they showed a ruthless edge in taking full toll.
Tigers v Demons, Friday night: The Tigers were plucky in patches, but ultimately just didn’t have the cattle to match the very impressive Demons, with the 2026 mark of the year winner (surely??) leading the way. Anyone checked the ladder lately? The Dees are FOURTH. I know it’s only round 7, but who would have had them so high before the season started? They’re not just beating weaker opponents either, they’ve taken care of last year’s semi finalists and premiers already. Another big test next week.
Hawks v Suns, Saturday arvo: Even without Moore and Sicily the Hawks are damn good - especially when they get on one of those irresistible in-game runs. They demolished the Suns early, nearly let the lead slip, then blew them away again late. That’s three losses in the last four now for Gold Coast, and the only win in that stretch was a nailbiter against a team they were supposed to beat by millions. Need to change something fast.
Bombers v Pies, Saturday arvo: This wasn’t an Anzac Day match for the highlight reels, in fact it was genuinely gross to watch for long patches. The Dons came into the game in pretty good form, hung close in the first half without really threatening, then were absolutely dispatched by the Pies after half time.
Power v Cats, Saturday night: It shaped as a banana peel game for the Cats, and it turned into a really dirty night in the end. Soundly beaten, and an injury to one of their key pieces in Blicavs to go with it. Port put the writing on the wall with an excellent showing against the high flying Hawks last week and they played right up to that form line again. Manic pressure all over the ground, which meant that Geelong barely looked like scoring after quarter time.
Dockers v Blues, Saturday night: Some might view a 14 point win over a cellar dweller as unimpressive, but there’s plenty to like about a side that can cruise for most of the game then unfurl the sails for just long enough to put a gap on the scoreboard before easing down again. Sounds silly given they’re second on the ladder but I reckon plenty are under-estimating the Dockers.
Saints v Eagles, Sunday arvo: Ugliest result of the weekend and then some. The Saints smelt blood in the water early and made a real mess of the Eagles as the game went on. Never fear, I’m still not letting my mate Ross Lyon off the hook. St Kilda would have won by 200 without him.
Lions v Crows, Sunday arvo: I think most people thought the Lions would win, but the margin surprised a few. Looks like the champs are starting to flex their muscles. Huge win over last year’s ladder leaders. Great to see Jordan Dawson
back out there for the Crows and kicking a couple of goals.
Giants v Roos, Sunday twilight: The round finished with a gem of a game! North wouldn’t have got anywhere near winning a game like this in seasons gone by. Tonight they found themselves a fair way behind in the last term but stuck to their guns admirably. The Giants go home winners, but make no mistake the Roos are coming.
