The AFL has made many bad decisions over the years but this one is too much for me.

Even if we didn't have Cody as a father-son this year this decision is just horrible and is asking for teams to manipulate the draft (and even tank). I say we should all write to our CEO / President and demand that we take this one to court. I think a number of clubs would support us.

It might bring on a complete collapse of the draft system which I wouldn't be keen on but that may be the price of ensuring this abomination of a decision is quashed - though more likely the AFL would fold and reverse the decision as they would be so keen that their draft 'house of cards' doesn't collapse.

Hilarious that even Bassat recognises that these changes are stupid.

I wonder if the AFL will be able to find a single club official or coach who thinks this is a good move? Or a single media person whose name doesn't rhyme with Hal Hoomey?
I couldn't care less about that idiot's opinion. He's the one who opened this can of worms, and about as unprofessionally as you can get.

Here he is …

This ability to earn a free second-round pick will incentivise “tanking” according to St Kilda president Andrew Bassat.
“The problem that needed to be solved is the draft is incredibly compromised and they’ve not only gone weak on the changes that were necessary to ensure fairer price but they’ve added new compromises in this new system,” Bassat told AFL.com.au.

“I think it is an error as we need less, not more, distortion and will be unwound in no time. It will lead to all sorts of issues including almost certain tanking to ensure a bottom five finish.”

You'll find Bidmond and Bid Coast will be positive of the changes.

I don't know whether this is an option but could players do a "Buckley" and only go to a club they don't desire with an understanding that they can go to the club of their choice after their original contract is completed. To quote from Wikipedia "Buckley signed with the Bears for the 1993 AFL season as part of a deal between Buckley and the Bears that allowed him to go to the club of his choice the following season. Brisbane hoped his time in Queensland would be long enough to change his mind." And we know where he ended up after that season.

If we did that, we'd lose the extra pick we gained from the Cochrane bid.

If we've got pick 1, we try to get another mid-range 1st rd pick through the trade period (mix of players plus 2027 picks). Then bid on Cochrane, then match at 3.
Why would we lose our composure pick. Bidding at pick 1 on Cochrane gets us that pick.

I am convinced that the likes of James Hird and Riewoldt going into bat for us isn’t about us at all. We are just the club (and Port) affected right at this very moment by new FS rules that will affect * and St Kilda in the coming years. James Hird definitely has Koby Bewick in mind rather than Cody Walker.

Next to zero chance of Richmond trading pick 1 now as they would lose their eligibility to get the bottom 5 compo pick. As they would no longer be in their 'natural draft position'

Absolutely, yes. Would need a compelling trade proposition.

If 1 gets traded for 4, and 3 chooses an academy, wouldn't whoever has 4 still get the bonus rd 2 pick because they were originally in the bottom 5?

Clubs will need to be less nostalgic in recruiting. Is Cody worth giving up 2 first or if there was no connection would we select Van Hatton and someone else? Was Dean worth what we paid or should we have picked others?

You are no longer getting the players at a discount so the selections ar enot so straight forward. Do they match the list management strategy

Basically what ever trade we'd offer we would have to through a Syd round 1 pick on top.

The question has to be asked if its worth getting Cody or taking our and Sydney's first and then the compo pick we'd get from a Cochrane bid. Or at least we need to feed the media it isn't a forgone conclusion we take him.

Just to be clear...

If Richmond have pick 1, and we have pick 4. We do a trade and we end up with each other's picks.

Neither Richmond nor Carlton will be eligible for a compo pick.

This is coming up a bit, so here's the source:

"preceding season" is a bit misleading. It means the season just finished. So only teams that finished in bottom 5 are eligible.

The second bullet point is the killer - the compo only applies if your natural first-round pick hasn't been moved. If you have traded that pick, no bananas.

“Carlton has had it’s lick of the ice cream.”. Can I go on record as saying I absolutely hate that expression and always have.

It’s even worse when it’s in a professional setting.
