Bont, Sanders and Sellwood were awesome.

Not much else about that game was awesome.

Take the win and move on
You forget Williams and Artie Jones. Made amazing contributions. Smith was very important after English left the ground.

Umpires couldn't care less that Naughton was getting taken out in midair every time he went up. Multiple times directly in front there was a gigantic shove in his back and not a single one lifted the whistle to their mouth.
Interstate umpiring is awful. Ruins the reputation of our game. Absolute rubbish

Thought Coffield was pretty stiff on that one Georgiadies just charged at him not sure what else he was supposed to do apart from stand aside and let him through

Coffield had no free kicks against so mustn’t have been paid for that. Some have suggested it was a downfield free against Kennedy for contact after the kick

A tick to our defense for the most part. Buss was bad, Khamis was bad but think he was thrown off by those two soft frees in the first. Coffield has surprised me since coming back, definitely solid enough but it's been the two signings Budarick and Sellwood that have really changed things for the back line. Would've had both in our top 6 players on the night. Just do all the little things well
Budarick is very important to our backline. He settled it. I thought Busslinger improved again. I would persist with him, but still makes horrible mistakes. Needs to become confident. Bukhu is a third tall defender. Lewis was great. He will be the next Tory 'Dicko' Dixon. He did really well. Gallagher in spite of his luck lustre (spud) performance, kicked the winning point!

Two umpires paid separate free kicks, but as the downfield was earlier that's the one that goes on the sheet.

2026 Ruck Table (minimum 90 ruck contests)...

HTA.webp
RC = Ruck Contests, HO = Hitouts, HOTA = Hitouts To Advantage, HO% = Hitout Win %, HOTA% = Hitout To Advantage Rate, RCHTA% = Hitouts To Advantage Per Ruck Contests

Emmett ranked 40/42 for hitout win %, 38/42 for hitout to advantage rate and 41/42 for hitouts to advantage per ruck contests.

Smith ranked 37/42 for hitout win %, 36/42 for hitout to advantage rate and 37/42 for hitout to advantage per ruck contests.

Numbers aren't everything, but having both our backup rucks being in the bottom 6 in key stoppage areas, for a team that is built around scoring from stoppage, I think it would be madness to play both in any future games that English misses, especially considering that both Emmett and Smith struggle to cover the ground and what we saw in R5-R7.

I know I keep going on about it, but I'd love to see us try Smith and Croft next week, with Croft also being able to be a target inside 50.

Also Dwayno wasn’t too bad on the call but I hope someone calls midday madness on Monday and rips into him for labelling Will Lewis as a player who plays for free kicks in only his 4th game based off one of those he held/I held marking contests. Toss.
Lol he is though, did it last week as well.

Would love to know what was going through Butters head when he lines up Frieja. That's about as close to Houston on Rankine as you'll see, he's a very lucky boy. Incredibly dumb.

Wow that umpiring had a significant impact on that game.
Just horrible.
Agree, I am not one to really moan about umpiring as i think it evens out but some of the non-decisions to us vs decisions they got were horrendous. It started with that non paid lasso kick to us on the broadcast side of the ground. It ended when the final siren went.

scrappy finish but oh so important 4 pts....Budarick was good, def. fits in playing like that.....Artie Jones, how many smaller players will take a mark running into a probable collision, still 22yo, potentially anything.....Dale's disposals are sometimes little missiles, great to watch

Sellwood is going to play 200 games in that backline. Just what we needed.

Not pretty, but you take the win every day of the week. Go Dogs!
There were signs at pre season training. I recall watching him work really hard and was very hard on himself when he made an error or fluffed a disposal. Was a standout for his desperation. He’s got that inner fire that you cannot coach. Gets the best out of himself, even if he’s nowhere near the most talented guy going around. Couldn’t be more happy for the guy. A classic case of getting reward for hard work, not necessarily talent.

There's no danger in Ed getting a week for the umpire contact right? I think may just be a fine as Rowell has copped previously and got a few warnings?
I mean, if it was going to happen to a player from any team...

He's seriously a top ten pick in any draft, I don't know how he fell thru the cracks but fantastic talent identification by Sammy for the MSD.

Lewis is actually a pretty handy player. Not a world beater but carries himself well, competes in the air and finishes off when he gets the opportunity.

He’s definitely AFL standard and a very shrewd selection given what we needed with Darcy going down.

Buku definitely got lost a couple times of Mitch. But the first two frees against, especially the first one, were just the umpire barracking for Mitch.

It wasn’t his best game but I want to give a shout out to his ball use tonight. Thought he kicked really nicely

Skills lacking, but good to see them hold their composure at the end.

What are we doing with Khamis? Looked great when he was playing as a third tall that could come off his man but he's always been lost when he has to be accountable. Obviously injuries play a part but surely that's what Coffield and Buss have been brought in to do? I'm not expecting either to be great but it's hard to be worse than Buku right now.

Instead of losing the Georgeiades matchup but winning elsewhere by letting Buku mop up some stray balls, we're now just losing that matchup and not having the win of Khamis intercepting. We've robbed Peter and gave Paul an IOU.
Why didn't we move Buss onto him you think? It seemed the obvious move after the first 2 contests Buku lost.

With Naughton, Darcy, Croft, Lobb and Emmett on the list it seemed odd to go for a 26 year old KPF but very glad we did.

Even when Darcy is back he might keep his spot as a third tall, or will at least make sure Croft and others are fighting to stay in.

I think he could kick 30+ across a season given a chance.

Great to get a win.

Thought Selwood was one of our best. Great game.

Arty had an almost game. Looked really dangerous every time he was near it. He's come on in leaps and bounds this year.

Sanders is really starting to shine now Libba has missed a couple. Starting to break the lines too which is promising.

Shoutout to Naughton for drastically improving his set shots. Must have worked on it a lot over the last few years. Would say he's reliable nowadays which I never thought would happen.

Overall a pretty positive hit out other than English going down again.
