Cochrane maybe rated higher but if Richmond want that extra pick at the end of the round, they need to be absolutely certain that Port will match. At this stage Port don't have that ability to match pick 1. CARLTON does.
Thus, it is more logical for Richmond to bid on Cody at pick 1 as Carlton will match. Richmond then go on to receive the end of R1 pick plus they can now chose to bid on Cochrane or HVM with the strong possibility of obtaining their choice.
Well lucky for Port the draft isn't held in May. They will know if they can match or not on the night.

And if they can't match at 1 but could later they end up getting the best player in the draft... But Port will be able to match, they lobbied the league for access to this player, they will get the points.

I think you are underselling the Swans' first. We should theoretically be trading into 2028 first round and trying not to go too far into deficit.
I don't think I'm underselling it at all - in fact, I may have overestimated it's value in today's economy.

Just looking at the possibilities of best utilising it so it doesn't get swallowed up matching a bid....

Ideally, we trade it for a player. Or package up the Swans' 2026 and 2027 1st to get someone of quality. That's where our list management have to get their hands dirty in the trade period.

Even if the Swans win the premiership and we have pick 18 - ie the final pick on the first night of the draft - it'll be a highly valued pick. There'll be a host of clubs keen on it even before the night begins. Every year, there's a swag of players still available the end of night 1 that have slid, and clubs will want access to them before the great log jam at the beginning of night 2. The last pick on night 1 is like the kid in the lolly shop with so many to choose from before they get devoured - and all the players clubs have on their whiteboard slowly get crossed off before their next pick.

Don't forget that with the AFL's compo gifts at the beginning of the 2nd round, every other club's 2nd round picks will be diluted by a minimum 4 spots.

You may want to review the context in which that "gossip" was provided but whatever, enjoy reading only first hand accounts on here, but remember not to repeat them to anyone
Think about this from Cody's point of view. You're sharing a subjective opinion about the character of a young man. He has no opportunity to respond. He may read this forum. It's hearsay and not relevant to his football.

Given tonight's result, I'd say we won't be 18th. If we hypothetically finish 15th (which is a real chance), how could that affect our draft (getting Walker, and then possible others)?
If we finish anything but 18th, the chances of us drafting a top prospect like HVH + Walker become less than 1%.

Even if we finish 16th, there's just no way Tiges/WCE/Essendon don't bid on Walker before our pick, even if Cochrane gets bid on first.

If we get the spoon, it's completely different. We will get a bonus pick 19 by bidding on Cochrane (or whatever pick at the start of the 2nd round)...and be able to draft HVH/Butler and still match Walker using the Swans 1st, North's 2nd and 2027 points if needed...and a reminder...still get to draft someone at pick 19/20ish.

How can the AFL actually say the new rules don't encourage tanking?

Edit: start of the second round may actually be something like pick 17 this year if multiple first round picks get used to match Walker/Cochrane bids.

Say Port use 2 first rounders to match Cochrane and we do the same for Walker...the hypothetical Tiges wooden spooners would get HVH at pick 3 + pick 17, being the first pick of the 2nd round...just madness

"You're sharing a subjective opinion about the character of a young man." Pretty sure this entire site is subjective opinions of young men.

"It's hearsay and not relevant to his football."

I would suggest that the character of a player we are going to spend significant draft capital on is very relevant but again, look at the context of the original post.

Gerard Healey commentating on Richmond v Adelaide just now said some are saying Koutas boy could be even better than Kouta... is that really how highly he's being rated? Long way out but thats some big props.
Hyperbole, Kouta was one of the best to ever do it.

We need to get out of this fade out mentality, find a decent coach and get as far up the ladder as possible.

Getting a wooden spoon with this list would be a nightmare and a disaster that will hurt us for years more than any draft pick can compensate for.

It will definitely rule us out of any decent FAs so automatically it's a dead loss.

Yeah, complete fool - multiple premiership player with Echuca (and league team the the year player), winner of the Murray Football league B&F with Moama, best clubman award winner with Echuca and partner in a large accounting firm.
I'm sure your mate will be rapt you doxxed him. You are aware Echuca Moama is not a huge place and they do have access to the internet?.

I would give very short odds about one of the local kids reading this and it finding it's way to the family.

Good job on the internet points though.

It's of course better to rocket up the ladder, which I think we are capable of doing. I'd much rather finish in the top 10 and be in the running for finals.

There's absolutely no benefit finishing on the same or 1-2 wins more than Essendon and Tiges though and finishing 16th. We're still absolute shit. We're still not going to get a FA. The only difference is HVH or no HVH.

What did Cody do take the last pie at the pie night so your cousins husband's son missed out?

There are plenty of rumours out there about young players that are best left unsaid especially if you are getting the information off others. Cody has done nothing on the field to suggest he is anything but a pro

In theory as well, if Richmond bid on a player at 1 to get themselves a PP at 19 is the benchmark.

Then trading from 2 to 1 would only require a pick of 18 or lower to give them a better deal

Maybe our NGA/FS academy should be all about encouraging obviously highly talented players to take up basketball at 16 or 17. Seriously, we have not had a seriously good/successful father son since Lance Whitnall was drafted in 1996, 30 years ago, all of a sudden we have a bunch coming through and the rules change to screw us.

What do they say about conspiracy theories. Eventually they become fact?

AFL = Anti Carlton agenda.

Maybe Greg Swann has it out for us. He was an epic failure as our CEO, practically did nothing when we really needed him to step up and remodel us as a modern structured football club. We were the last club in the game to have a list manager under Greg Swann. We ended up with salary cap issues under Swann which saw Brett Ratten (and recruiters) unable to make any bold moved to progress. Basically saw him sacked and Malthouse comes in, he was also unable to make any bold moves, had to lose players. Was able to get Thomas to come to us but we had to lose Betts. Not because of Malthouse, we should have been able to have both and the rest, but because of the salary cap issues developed under an incompetent Greg Swann who failed to put together a good football department and left us without a list manager.

Went to an already made Brisbane who won flags, would have with anyone as the CEO.

That gets him a job at the AFL where he again proves he is completely out of place.

The guy is a fraud!

A strong finish to the year with a good new coach coming in changes everything.

Going for draft picks = another 10+ years of cellar dwelling. We are the club who have proved this.

Has nobody noticed?

"This new rule change is really going to benefit Carlton. But you know what, let's do it anyway."

Words spoken by nobody at the AFL ever.

An already made Brisbane? In 2014?

It must have been tough on clubs in the past like St Kilda, South Melbourne, Footscray, Fitzroy, and even North and Melbourne (for a time) trying to maintain their winning culture when tanking wasn't around to lose it.
