These rule changes were in place for the 2016 election so people will be getting used to them. Much much better system than the group tickets which definitely resulted in people's vote preferences going to parties that they wouldn't support. Anyway, this should help explain the changes:

I'm not sure you really understand how the vote counting works in elections on a macro level. While regular booth voting is normally completed on the night (both in state and federal elections), there is about 15-25% of absentee, pre-pools, declarations etc that need to be checked and counted...
