Clubs are investing resources in kids from regional areas. The AFL gets more high quality draftees. It doesn't benefit established Melbourne clubs unless they want to contribute to regional development. For clubs with issues with player retention, the academy system is a godsend.

Not much incentive to develop footy players from regional areas then is there. The AFL needs more high caliber players. The cities are pretty good at developing talent. The academies gives regional kids access to resources that a lot of city kids take for granted. The clubs are footing the bills...

I doubt clubs will be bidding on players unless they genuinely rate them as the best pick available at that selection. Nobody knows how the other clubs rate them.

Might not have the picks to make it happen. I really don't like the compo system. It penalises every team in the draft for a player wanting to move (by moving them down the pick order). At least this way only the team getting the player is penalised.

I wouldn't scrap compo, just take the compo equivalent in draft points off the team that get's the player. Don't make all the teams pay for Team A's free agency acquisition, just make Team A stump up. Teams wouldn't be quite so keen to pick up FA if they had to give up a first and second rounder...
