The crowd means Brisbane vs Essendon maintains the highest average home crowd for Brisbane out of any side. Brisbane vs Essendon is also the only match up to never dip below 20K at the Gabba.
The same fixture vs Sydney drew 51K in 2018 so it's certainly not a lack of fans. Sydney have a large Melbourne base so most turn up to the limited Melbourne games they have. They can have up to 8K-15K at MCG games and I do believe they had somewhere in that range last week.
COVID had crowds...
What's up with Melbourne's crowds? I expected more after a drought-breaking premiership and a 10-0 start. Lucky to have been 20K Melbourne fans at the game vs Sydney.
I'd say even a disinterested Essendon fanbase will go close to topping 33K vs Sydney in a few weeks.
25K max IMO, which is still a big crowd all things considered. Though we have a big following in WA, I doubt we'd get any more than 10K of our supporters to the game. 5K Richmond fans and 10K neutral.
If this wasn't a dreamtime game, it would have drawn about 12K.
Sorry but your argument is all over the place. I explained it very clearly and provided the proof.
I can't be bothered going back and forth. If you're confused, read all of my posts again and you'll understand.
Yeah I did include crowds before 1997 when it comes to the highest crowds because any crowd above 50K must've been played at the MCG or Waverley and that's for every team. It's an even playing field there. It shows what the ceiling of that fixture is, regardless of whether it was 10 years ago or...
I wasn't including finals. Just home and away. But if we want to compare finals:
Essendon vs West Coast SF - 85656
Essendon vs West Coast SF - 75453
Are you including all-time averages? You know Princes Park has a higher capacity than Windy Hill.
There's a section on AFL tables that has...
Is it really that they don't show up to away games or is it that Carlton aren't as big as the other 3 clubs to begin with?
All of their big crowds seem to involve the big 4. They don't draw as well to non-big 4 games home or away.
Compare the highest home crowd for each interstate team (though...
So you are comparing our attendances when we were dead last with most of our players serving drug suspensions to your attendance having won 3 out of the last 4 premierships?
Yep. That's the order of average home attendances.
Though Carlton have more support outside of Victoria than Richmond do, they have less support in Melbourne.
A lot has changed since the 70s.
Windy Hill means we've always had the least capacity. We were also not successful in the 70s unlike the other 3 who were playing in grand finals.
It's like comparing Hawthorn and Melbourne in the 70s and believing that things are still the same. Melbourne were...
AFL tables starts it from 1997 so I took it from there.
It's a large enough sample size to cover years of success and years of mediocrity for all clubs.
People get powerful clubs confused with largest clubs.
Currently, the most powerful clubs are West Coast, Richmond and Collingwood (in that...
I think it's fairly simple.
Collingwood and Essendon have always been the biggest Melbourne clubs since Essendon moved away from Windy Hill in the 90s.
Richmond enjoyed a boost from the premierships, but we're now seeing it return back to how it always was.
If Essendon won a premiership and...
Essendon with 2 flags, 5 minor premierships and 3 grand final appearances shouldn't be below:
North with 2, 2 and 3
Adelaide with 2, 2 and 3
Richmond with 2, 1 and 2
People forget what Richmond were like pre-2017.
On a national scale, it's:
Collingwood
West Coast
Richmond
On wealth, West Coast trumps both.
Pre-2017, no one would argue that Richmond had more support than even Essendon. I doubt a premiership boost can leap them over Collingwood and West...
The saga had a huge impact in 2014. Hird was suspended for a year. We only had 3 crowds above 60K for the season (ANZAC day and Dreamtime) and 1 above 75K (ANZAC day). We had no idea whether a win would be marred by suspensions the following year. We were also kicked out of finals the year...
Would Geelong vs Essendon have drawn 53K last night though?
It'd have more interest is what I am saying. Nothing exciting about two clubs who've been there and done that. Brisbane or Essendon however makes the game more interesting.
Like I said pre-game, Geelong vs West Coast was never an appealing matchup to neutrals. If it was Geelong vs Brisbane or Geelong vs Essendon, it'd have more appeal.
I think the other issue is that Geelong vs West Coast is not really an appealing match up for neutrals.
Geelong vs Brisbane would probably spark more interest.
