Not sure it’s Gil’s discretion - more like club lobbying for extra profitable games. Eg Hawks to Tassie for Tassie $, Vic clubs lobbying to play Pies, Tigers, Bombers for their bottom line boost and so on.
A few posters have identified fewer games = less $. I’d consider fewer teams = overall...
Yup.
The issue becomes which ‘live or die’
To me only way to eliminate clubs from AFL is for Commission to establish key metrics over a set period (say 5 yrs) to determine thems who are ‘in’ and the same who are ‘out’
Without analysing club positions metrics could include things like winning...
I could never understand why Darren Glass was not de-listed after about 2 years. Did nothing, was nothing and would amount to nothing.
I may have been a little wrong with that one:)
And you were going so well for a while there ........................................
Nice siding doors commentary too - Barrett better lift his game.
For mine.
1. WCE V Collingwood in Perth to open the season - IMO opinion season should always open (& fck the side bar arrangements) with a GF...
G'day Fry -
IIRC in WCE early days (not sure which year) we got a bank of games in Melb and the club did try the stay in Vic so we don't travel as much routine but did not repeat it. On this basis I suspect the club head shed decided it simply wasn't worth it. Now, as I initially said, not...
I actually think we are very close to this point now.
Too many raids being made on the same clubs with scraps being thrown back. In some respects GWS and GCS are being treated exactly the same way the WAFL and SANFL were treated prior to AFL expansion - feeder leagues for the bigger clubs...
Interesting comment this one.
Assuming Gaff did leave - the compensation pick (by AFL 'rules') would have been immediately after our first round pick which was at the end of the first round. Lycetts compensation pick was there too - so not sure how Gaff's compensation pick would have changed...
I suspect the reduced travelling gained by such an arrangement would be well and truly outweighed by the need to be away from home for so long. Circa two weeks out of your own home, bed, away from kids/partners etc and different routines would be highly disruptive. This aspect is the reason all...
Just a couple of random thoughts:
1. Mid-season byes - there have been occasions when one WA team has a bye and yet the other still flies across the country. Why cannot the flying WA team stay at home that weekend - crowd generally good, one less away game (would need to be alternated across...
Disclaimer - cannot say I know a lot about Norths playing list and not sure if anyone else has said similarly.
To me NM are going about building their list the wrong way - going for a hail mary deal without a solid support cast puts too much pressure on the big signing. For mine NM should...
I wonder if the 50 year 'MCG contract' was to take the whole 'where should the granny be' debate off the table.
They have an easy answer "we have a contract"
All that aside - hope it is a good game. With my team coming out in front :)
Good call - listening to some of the numbers being bandied around about some offers allegedly being made to free agents makes sports management a very lucrative profession.

For me it is touch and go between Judge (all points covered) and John Todd (2 years).
Toddy took over from Alexander (shafted) who had done a respectable job in the clubs first year with limited physical resources (no home oval, facilities etc). At years end he was gone for (?????? - some...
With the East Perth alignment we see (IMO) too many kids playing in the one team. I for one are grateful that McGinnity and Wellingham are hanging around to help the kids - that is assuming they are giving the right messages and leading by example. Shame some of our other recent retirees...
From WCE POV.
Chris Mainwaring and his knee (down at Geelong?) - clearly remember him trying to come back with something akin to 'calipers' on his now dodgy keen. IIRC - wasn't long before he retired.
Laurie Keene could have been something.
5min 'mix up' - MY ARSE.
Mayne hadn't re-signed for an extended period of time. Media reports he was going 'somewhere' - and now Buckley said it was a 5 minute mix up. I call BS.
Agree wholeheartedly with this - really object to those crosses just before games start giving the odds relating that game. Encouraging people to gamble - too much social fallout from gambling for me.
Apart from the non-called holding the ball in the North / Richmond game when the game was on the line.
Geez someone has let the goldfish out of the bowl
Open season with Friday night GF replay.
Then every one plays each other once.
After every one has played each other once - one week bye.
Then groups of 6 playing each other as per 17/5 arrangement.
Week off for all finalists then into top 8 as per current arrangements.
More even spread of...
This so much.
Like you I thought he was 'another one' who hung around for a year too long. Last couple of games were similar to watching a rewind of his earlier years.
Ross Lyon - aging & shallow list, recruited for short term gain not long term, poached from St Kilda to win premiership, top of the ladder, home finals, rested players, been around the place for a while now.
