For all that has ben said about our players skill level, talent or lack of, team selections, previous drafting and recruiting and constant critisim by some of pagan's coaching and game plan.
IMO our real problem has been 1 percenters or lack of them.
spoils- too often we are caught 1/2 a step behind and arrive too late to spoil or we don't go hard enough when we have the chance.
tackles- we miss too many tackles and klet players out of our grasp too easily. many of our players do not have effective tacking techniques. We currently have the Melbourne Storm at Princes Park, lets ask them to teach our players how to tackle effectivly.
shepherds- this is basically non existent in our game, once in a while our players throw their hands out to shepherd, but they are not actually comitted to stopping an oppostion player or giving out player an extra meter of space. Also when we shepherd we need to make sure we shepherd to make body contact with an opposition player and stop the player. Most AFL players don't like body contact and don't expect it, so when we shepherd we need to go in hard and we need to look for the body contact, if we continually do this then opposition players won't want the body contact and will step to the side or they will worry about bracing themselves for the contact and not about the ball carrier. Hence job done
smothers- basically not enough of them and when it happens its is the same players (betts & murphy). Our players need to be prepared to put their bodies on the line, when they smother they need to dive acosss the ball and the players feet. What we seem to do it put our hands out, turn our heard and hope the opposition kick the ball into us.
chasing- we don't chase enough and we don't chase hard enough, even we can't catch a player we should continue the chase as it creates pressure, give the opposition player another thing to think about. There have been some good examplaes of great chase but they are few and far between.
talk- this is one thing any player can do regardless of talent, number they went on the draft or game plan we employ. We don't talk enough out on the the ground. Talking can be encouragment, calling FEV's when going for a mark, calling a player back to take the mark while your protecting him, letting a player know he has time or to get rid of the ball or even advising where to kick (be an extra set of eyes). The only player I see who talks on a regular basis during play is Lance.
If we can get every player, each week to increase their 1 percenters (or some of them to start doing them) and to apply them for 4 quarters them I am pretty sure we would not be in out current 1-5 position. more than likely we would be 4-2 or 3-3.
Just like every team hurts us on our turnovers, we need to start hurting teams on their turnovers, but the only way to do this is to actually do the things that cause turnovers- 1 percenters.
If we have 22 players each doing the 1 percenters for 4 quarters, each week, then we are going to be much better off and we are going to start winnig games.
