Ok i was going to do a poll but it doesn't look like I can so here goes:

Melbourne Cup v Cox Plate.

For me the Cox plate is the #1 day on the racing calander. It is the showcase of the spring carnival and features the best horses in the business and generally gives you a close fair dinkum race (barring Sunlines big win two years back).

The Melbourne Cup is always going to be the big thing which is a bitter dissapoinment. It is a cheaters race in all aspects!!
The best racehorses will virtually never win, it is going to come down to which trainer can hide their horses up in Echuca for the longest and still qualify for the big day.

The best racehorses in the country, ie Sky Heights, will never win. What chance does it have when it is conceeding in excess of 10 kilograms to the horses that just sneak into the race with around 50kg on their backs???

For quality of racing you can't go past Derby Day.

Derby Day has 3 Group 1 races and every race on the card has Group status.

Cup Day has the cup and that's it. Every other race is filled with average horses competing for too much money for the standard of race.

Caulfield Guineas day is a fave too. The country's best 3 year old's over 1600m. I still get shivers when I see the replay of the 1999 Guineas and the battle between the two great colts, Redoute's Choice and Testa Rossa.

Redoute's, the million dollar blueblood fighting back strongly to pip Testa on the line was one of my highlights in racing. (The fact I had some money on him added to the excitement!)

Melbourne Cup gets all the attention and attracts the once a year type punters, but for the serious punter you can't go past the Cox Plate closely followed by Derby Day.

Mmm,where to start??
Ever heard of Saintly,Might & Power,Doriemus?

It's not 1974 anymore, with the tragic exception of Brew, name me the last non-WFA horse to win the Cup.

Ever think maybe Sky Heights couldn't run 2 miles?

Are you suggesting the Cup should be WFA?
You obviously have no idea, ever heard of history or tradition?

I'm not suggesting that it should be WFA.

What i was trying to say is that wherever handicaps are involved things become very dicey.

Some horses are always going to be hidden away and slip through the handicappers gate.

If they are not careful it will turn out like the Stawell Gift, no-namer horses winning and champion horses missing out on a deserved victory.

It makes a good story for the media when a horse comes from nowhere and wins the biggest race in the country but it is hardly good for racing.

Wait and see, come cup day i'll be backing the little known roughie with no weight.

Derby Day if by far and away the best day of racing in Australisia in not the world for the quality of the card. 3 group 1 races, Derby, McKinnon & the sprint; 3 group 2 races and 3 group 3s.

Melbourne Cup Day is very ordinary with only the cup and 2 listed races - Hong Kong Jockey Club and Great Western. Cox Plate Day (formerly known as Monnee Valley Cup Day) only has the Plate but may go back to having the Monnee Valley Cup as well.

Sethlad look up your racing history Doriemus is not a WFA horse. Previous winners that have performed at handicap.

Jeezabel, Doriemus and how far do you want to go back anyway.

My point is that Doriemus & Jezabeel were both placed at WFA,they may not have been WFA stars but were well above handicap standard.

Since Kingston Rule won in 1990,the Cup is a different race. You need to be WFA standard to win.
Handicappers still run in the placings but apart from Brew, every winner since 1990 has been competitive at WFA.
