I’m a fan as well, but lately it seems like he’s leaning too much into a Skip Bayless‑style persona in AFL media.
His brand is hot takes and outrage if it wasn’t him it would be someone else.

Pity, he probably knows a fair bit about football but when you have to have 10-15 opinions and positions a day you’re bound to put out a lot of shit.

typical click bait media and their own bias. Cornes trying to pretend hes Stephen A Smith, and Whateley trying to pretend people under 65 will listen to him.

All contracts are a risk. We hope he plays 8 strong years and wins a Norm Smith, and who knows if it will happen. However in a league that doesnt know the rules from one year to the next, changing draft rules, players getting farms and cotton on deals, the smart move is to lock in a player who will help us on the field and help us build a compeditive culture.

Would rather loyalty and culture than mercanaries just after cash

Kane is against any contract longer than 2 or 3 years EOS. He can't/wont look passed that. I like Cornes BTW, but anyone with half a working brain cell can see all the advantages of doing what we have with Walshy. Sends a clear and concise message to all his team mates (past and present) and coaches.
Unless it's for his #1 thirst object, JHF.

BACK in 2018, a 17-year-old Sam Walsh said this to The Age in the months leading up to the 2018 AFL Draft.

"I hold loyalty pretty high, and I'd definitely love to repay the club if they happen to pick me up, so that's something pretty high on my agenda."

Some things don’t change.

I think in terms of what Kane has said - there are as yet undiscovered tribes in the Amazon who knew he was going to criticise the Blues for the 8 years. And to be honest, we probaly all agree clubs would prfer to know be siging usch lengthy deals but that is the market place. Butters will be offered 10 years I beleive.

Where Kane got it wrong is that the Blues should go back to a full rebuild and use Walsh to get picks - not sure how given he is a free agent although I guess we could try and match and then deal. our list does not need a full re-build - that's where he Kane is being a tabloid bitch.

It's the age old fable about draft picks. Let's trade out a known entity in Sam Walsh - quality human, true pro, great leader for an unknown 18 year old who 'might' be just as good.

Cornes does seem to have a bee in his bonnet about contract lengths doesn't he, its amazing what some people seem to have bees in their bonnets about these days, in order to get attention, or indulge in power trips, but as we know Cornes is as sharp as a bowling ball.

Walsh is an essential piece of our midfield and is young - if after 5 years it still doesn't look like we'll win a flag - we still have 3 years leverage in which to negotiate with Geelong for a couple of first round draft picks.

Yep. There is no Black or White about this. So many variables

Is it a risk? Yes, it is. It could pay off or could be a problem. No one knows. What we do know is with Walsh it won't be because of lack of effort or wanting to do the right thing. He is the type of 'citizen' that clubs need and love

I have no doubt we had to give him this deal to keep him. Cats were coming hard

I remember questioning deals for Alistair Lynch and Buddy Franklin but they worked

In the end only time will tell but I am happy he stayed and I see many many benefits. With TDK, Charlie, Jack all leaving last year we just couldn't let another gun go.
Contract length is starting to become worth more than contract salary. So it should. Career security and if you have had injury issues it's worth a lot more. IMO this is one of the ways we can lure some big names in coming seasons. We have the ability to do it.

Do you want to know what the good thing is? No one needed Kane Cornes’ permission to sign Sam Walsh to the contract he received.

I’ve heard he’s been working closely with Travis Boak on leadership and future‑captaincy development.

Both from the Bellarine Peninsula, both loyal club men.

Both from the Bellarine Peninsula, both loyal club men… and, well, both blokes who played footy?

You truly are on fire Chris.

I love Walshy as a Carlton player and I am glad someone wanted to re-sign, but I am nervous about the 8-year length given his injury record, and to be fair, his recent form. Hopefully this year puts those nerves at ease.
