I think, fwiw, that Tony Evans, with his 4 goals, was as instrumental in saving the game for us, as Peter Matera was in us kicking on in the third and fourth quarter to actually win it.

Thoughts?

No one denys that a lot of other players were instrumental in us winning, its just that Peter Matera IMO won the game off his own boot....

What a legend

West Coast had many talented players that year, but when we got 29 points in front just before half time, I was fairly confident that we could go on with the job and win the premiership. However, West Coast kicked 4 of the last 5 goals of the half and our lead was 12 points.... not big enough for us considering the Eagles would have more legs after having the week off.

As for what happened after half time, Gary Ablett kicked the first goal to put us 17 points in front... the rest was a nightmare for Geelong fans. :(

I played the dvd last night and captured a few screens off - especially that famous Peter Matera goal.

There was a problem with the screens - they were blurry because Peter Matera moved too fast.

:D :D :D

ahhh, such wonderful memories.

Who said living in the past was bad?

Evans I thought was instrumental in the change of the momentum in the GF, kicking the 2 goals in the first half and getting the ball rolling.

Matera did the rest.

Evans showed how couragous he was when he tried to get off the stretcher just after Ablett gave him a solid bump. His contribution was very much under-rated since Matera's performance was so amazing.

Midway through the 2nd quarter I felt sick - I had a terrible feeling that is was going to be like the 1991 GF all over again. But suddenly everything fell into place and the rest is history!

I think that was Don Pyke who got gutlessly taken out of the play by Ablett.

Did that mongrel get suspended for that or did the weak AFL boys look right over it and missed it?

I have watched the Pyke-Ablett Incident in slow mo, backwards forwards ad nauseam, and even though he was our boy, it was Pyke who was flying in to lay a massive bump on Ablett. Ablett only put his elbow out instinctively to defend himself. I doubt he had any case to answer. As much as it pains me to say it.

There is a passage of play in the second quarter, where there is a pack and a ball in dispute on the left hff (50 metre line) by the boundary with Eagles kicking to the left.

Matera goes into the pack, goes down to the bottom of it, gets the ball, shows it to everyone in the pack, then gets up, breaking two tackles in the process, motors across hf and kicks a goal on the run across his body from 55 m.

We have a new one like that now in Judd. Is it possible he might even be better one day?

Gutless?? Mongrel??

There was nothing wrong with Ablett's bump, and there was no need for Ablett to even face the tribunal for that incident.

You can roll your eyes all you like but the GUTLESS MONGREL lifted his elbow into Pyke's head. I dont know if you know the rules of the game, but there isnt anything legal about a deliberate elbow to the head, something Ablett did consitently throughout his career.

The defining Peter Matera moment, indeed, probably defining moment for any west coast fan was that goal from about 55 out, straight against the boundary line. Just the way he slipped away into space, and those legs started to churn, you hear Sandy Roberts (??) say 'Matera...sets sail for home...' almost in a tone of sick horror, and the ball starts to swing back, but Matera is already off and celebrating because he knows he simply couldn't miss that day.

iirc, I was 9 in 1992... I can remember my parents had some expat geelong supporter friends over on GF day. For the first half they were very talkative, and then after that, well they shut up considerably. There was that same look of horror on their face when Matera went nuts- there's not a lot you can do when a wingman is putting it through whenever he finds himself closer than 60m.

The thing which excites me so much about Judd, is has that same 'wow' factor as Matera. Against Brisbane in the second quarter, there was that same sense of 'I'm going to humiliate you guys, and there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop me,' as there was from Matera in the '92 final.

Ablett was a mongrel, but not gutless. He'd hand them out, but was also willing to take it on the chin when he copped it back.

Anyway, a few things stand out for me:

- Milli's game on Brownless. Oh, If only we could go back in time and grab him for today's side.
- Langdon kept us in the game during the first quarter simply by being a crazy bastard across half forward.
- Woosh did all you could ask for on someone like Ablett.
- Roo.

And the great thing is that a lot of the blokes who played in that flag are still involved with the club in some way. And the rest of them still hold a special place in their hearts for the club and would be welcomed back with open arms at any time.

We're only a young club, but we've already built some great history and tradition.

Yes, he was a gutless mongrel and even outside of football nothing has changed.
