Which midfield was/will be better.

1995
Kouta
Bradley
Williams
Ratten
Fraser Brown
Campo
Hanna

1995 hands down, tied together, blindfolded, with an apple in its mouth. Nothing with Craig Bradley in it will ever be beaten.

I'd still run with 1995. Alot more experience, and had been doing an excellent job for the longer than the current. Having said that though, if we did this comparison in another couple of seasons, you might get a different answer. This current midfield group has the potential to be right up there amongst the great midfields.

Sorry delete this one, I accidently pressed enter before I had finished

1995...but should bring this thread up again in about 4 years and then compare. I dare say it will be very even by then.

Still 1995.

Williams v Judd is a nice contest. Judd has it for speed and athleticism, but Diesel's vision and quick hands are unparallelled in the game. Let's hope McLean starts to replicate Ratten's inside work.

Would give anything to have another Ratten and Brown in our midfield now. Two hard nuts, who had the class and skill as well.

Fraser Brown was underrated. Never got the credit he deserved due to all the talent around him.

A better question would be;

Whose midfield is better? Carlton's circa 1993 through 1997 or Geelong's 2007 through 2010?

Both are premiership winning midfields who have superb players at other positions around the ground. However, you cannot deny that both teams' success was achieved by destroying the competition through the middle.

While we're at it, why don't we include the 1979 - 82 midfield. Three premierships in four years. Names like Johnston, Buckley, Sheldon, Harmes, Glascott, Ashman, Maylin. Shit Carlton's had some great teams!

And when you get right down to it, the midfield is key. I have lost count of how many different threads where this issue has come up. Get a world beating midfield and you are most of the way to a flag.

95 for mine by a long way yet, we have no one in the current squad that replicates the versitility of Kouta (maybe Tex but his body has not allowed him to show anything yet). Williams and Judd a tie, Bradley over Murphy so far but agree lets see how that looks down the track.

95 was harder at it, we know Mclean is hard at it but harder and better than Ratts? The rest of our mids for 2010 dont stack up either, YET. 95 also had Hoggie in and under at most centre bounces but I think he ran in off the wing or hbf and Rice playing toward the middle off a hff leaving room for Clape and Duke across CHF and Pierce and Sticks in the goals.

Its great to have the confidence in our mids to be starting to make these comparisons but still a tad premature.

That midfield was made great by the deeds of '95. Hopefully in 15 years time we'll be reflecting on whether that particular group of players is as good as the class of '10/'11/'12. IMO Williams though is the major difference in talent between the two groups. There hasn't been a player with his vision or capacity to control a game at Carlton or at any other club since.

We talk up our current midfield a hell of a lot (at times embarrassingly so) and to date they haven't produced shit.

Potential is the key word here, our current crop has enormous potential, but there is no sadder sight than unfulfilled potential. Hopefully, they can all eventually gel together and reach the zenith of their potential just like those magnificent young men of way back in '95.

The 1995 midfield, now that was potential fulfilled. Thats it, I'm off to have a quick bat on the strength of those fond memories.
