Can anyone give me some suggestions or tips for a new lap top.

I am going to uni this year. But atm I am a cripple due to an operation. So I want a laptop with a dvd player and wireless :thumbsu:

Any recommended brands or specific laptops?

Thanks

mate, i brought a $750 laptop for use as a cash register.

IT HAS DVD writer and ALL laptops have wireless even the $600 ones.

$2K gets you a lot of laptop these days.

Dell have a 13.3inch laptop with 6 (SIX) GB of RAM, 320GB HDD, 1280 x 800 screen, and is light (important in a laptop u are going to carry around) for about $1620.

you may not need that level of tech, seriously. a 1200 - 1400 beast may be enough.

Don't do anything until you have tried a Macbook...so superior, you will kick yourself if you spend your $ on something else. I have had 4 laptops, then I got my Mac...Everything is so much better...

can you only get Macs in Apple shops.

I am seriously limited here. I can only hobble between my bed, toilet and occasionally the computer haha.

so i can only send someone out to a shop an buy a laptop for me

can buy macbppk on line it will be delivered to your door turn it on and it's all there and working , no need to install windows or antivirus, it just works it will change your computing forever

If you decide against a Mac I have a HP Pavilion dv4 which I have found to be very good.

Yeah, buy online, paying for it is the most difficult thing you will ever have to do for it...and it is so easy, then you can really start to enjoy your computing...I am so pissed off that it took me so many years to try a Mac...many, many wasted years...

I doubt Ill be able to afford a Mac.

Looking at it it starts from about 2100. And thats just a basic mac.

thanks for the help so far though

Yep Macbook is your answer. Been a PC man for years but got my Macbook last year and have never turned back.

Will do you wonders.

This is all you need...

Don't forget you will probably save a few $ in the long run by not having to buy software or antivirus, not to mention that you will have trouble free computing, life will be better and chicks will like you more...

i just bought the $1648 one it is all you need i also paid $150 extra to have 2 mo Gig of ram installed but as is it will be more than enough for you.
The only difference between the aluminium and the whie macbook is Hard Drive space and ram.
The alumoinium looks nicer but it doesn't have a firewire port which i need so i went for the white it's the way to go

can buy it from streetwise for $50 cheaper than jb too

lol at all the mac love...

Can you all inform me of why they are so superior? At uni I use Macs, Windows and Unix computers. They all have their advantages for different reasons. Just curious as to why the 'general' user (I'm assuming you're all general users, if not what do you use it for?) would buy a mac over a windows supported laptop.

I think it's a "I hate M/S" thing Blue.
I use both Mac and Windows and there is absolutely no reason why I would use a Mac over a PC not to mention the fact that I would have to pay more for the privilege or lack thereof

Mac users are generally Point and Shooters, prefer a simple life and are happy to pay exorbitant prices for it

Anyone know if Mac is coming out with an Eee PC competitor?

I know you can get OSX on an Eee PC, but I'd rather get a real Mac.

The new Macbooks are sexy. But I'd like a 10" Macbook not 13" or 15" :(

Prior experience with Windows...

Fair enough, just out of curiosity how long ago?

You're right...but I think it's more than that. Mac have marketed themselves very, very well recently. What I've noticed around uni / generally amongst young people is that Macs are suddenly "cool" and all these people are rushing out to buy them to be a part of the cool crowd.

IMO Macs generally use their hardware to their optimum far better than a windows computer, but does that justify a massive price increase?

Sure macs are great, and once I finish uni I'll probably buy one when I can afford it, but to say that they are superior makes me think you're getting sucked into the hype

Not that I've heard....for now if you want it, you'll have to settle for it on an Eee PC.

I have had windows machines up until last year, still have to use them at work.

Cost is no issue for me as I get a lease through work, $5 per week, Mac or Windows laptop, no difference in charge.

The Mac is so much better, I have had no problems at all with it.

Both the last IT guys at my work have been Mac people, showed me how to use one and the benefits. I think you need to use one a while to see how much better they are. Plus my Mac has Word, Excel and Powerpoint so it is still compatible to the work PC's. But Pages, Numbers and Keynote are better...but so is everything else.
