Before I am shot down, there are many variables with the comparison I have put together of our last team to play a finals match versus last Saturday's chosen 22. I am no expert, so feel free to adjust the player comparisons and provide any feedback relevant to the topic if you wish.
Ironically, it was 10 years ago when we were thumped at the Gabba 136 to 68 in front of virtually the same crowd as Saturday (37000).
Back on the subject. today's team stacks up very well against the more experienced finals side of 2001. As Hardwick stated, " there is room for improvement", but from what I have witnessed so far, success & consistant finals appearances are not too far away. Anyway, here I go:-

2011 vs 2001
Bachar Houli Leon Cameron
Nathan Foley Wayne Campbell
Shaun Grigg Joel Bowden?
Shane Edwards Greg Tivendale?
Matt White Mark Chaffey
Trent Cotchin Matthew Knights
Reece Conca Jason Torney
Dustin Martin Paul Broderick
Robin Nahas Clinton King
Jack Reiwoldt Matthew Richardson
Brad Miller Ben Holland
Alex Rance Darren Gaspar
Luke McGuane Brendan Gale
Jake Batchelor Duncan Kellaway
Brett Deledio Aaron Fiora
Angus Graham Brad Ottens
Chris Newman Matthew Rogers
Shane Tuck Steven Sziller
Jake King Rory Hilton
Ben Nason Ezra Poyas
Dylan Grimes Andrew Kellaway
Ty Vickery Ray Hall

And the most telling comparison is our 2011 bottom 7 are streets above the 2001 bottom 7

Edwards
White.
Nahas
King
Nason
Miller
Graham

...V

Greg Tivendale
Clinton King
Aaron Fiora
Steven Sziller
Rory Hilton
Ezra Poyas
Ray Hall

To think that team 2001 consisted of 2 first round draft picks in Fiora & Hilton in your bottom 7!

I know it's only your personal opinion but you rate Jake King, Matthew White and Angus Graham behind Jake Batchelor. Interesting. :)

Not in career performances i dont, but the Batch is an 19yo 5 gamer who looks like he will play a quality 150, (should) have a far more impressive career than the above 3.

But i will stretch the list to 8 and add Batchelor and Chaffey.

Haha Good call.
I remember last year the CH7 HD channel showed the 2001 finals win against Carlton. Rory Hilton played the game of his life that day. I couldn't remember him doing that til last year. He only had about a dozen possies but was setting up goals and kiked a key one himself.
It was a long way from the bloke who threw his footy boot into the MCC Construction site in about 2005.

With Nason having played just 20 odd games I hope he can beef up like Daniel Jackson has. I reckon Jackson and Moore (2 blokes I love) are 2 blokes who would have been delisted in the past but because you cant delist everyone they survived, worked hard and are proof you need patience as most blokes play their best footy in their mid twenties. Having said that Nasons arms are gonna need a hell of alot of work.

King, Nahas, Graham > Vickery, Batchelor, Nason

At the moment, Nahas and King would be in our top 10. Shocking comparison.

Its not a shocking comparison at all. Nahas and King ARE in our top ten at the moment, but their is no denying they are bottom tier players who are playing career best footy. Thats why i made the comparison, to show they are streets ahead of those i listed from 2001 bottom 7

Out of curiosity who do you rate as our bottom 7 players from last weekend. Not based just on that game, but from an entire career perspective and probably where they will be in 2 or 3 years.

Yeah I had the window open for a while, so my reply was before I'd seen your comment about Batchelor's career. But, from an entire career perspective is hard to say. White, Vickery, Graham, Grimes, Rance, Mcguane, King, Nahas, Nason, Edwards and Houli could all end up being anything.

It's way too hard to call. If I had to guess though, and that is purely what it is, I would say Nason, Miller, Mcguane, White, Tuck, Graham and probably King. But that depends on what you mean by bottom 7, because I rate King easily in our top 10 most important players, just not most skilled.

Nahas is going to be a gun.

Just looking at the 2001 team in comparison,
Gaspar
Holland
Kellaway
Richardson
Ottens
Gale

an enormously talented KP/Ruck group at the time, I think that's where that team was far far better, in the big man department.

The team we have now however looks to have (or on potential atleast) a far better midfield/smalls brigade in Cotchin, Martin, Deledio, Foley, Conca etc.

Thats the big difference right there.

All those KPP's were performing really really well at the time also.

Please consider that KPP's mentioned above were probably on average 2-3 years older than our current crop of KPP's. Furthermore, I reckon Holland never reached his full potential, then we lost Ottens at the end of 2004. And finally Gaspar...as serviceable as he was, his skills (particularly his kicking) occassionally let us down!
